Every South Korean gets free Wi-Fi

Every South Korean gets free Wi-Fi
LG U+, a subsidiary of LG, has announced this week that everyone in South Korea will now have free Wi-Fi, no matter what ISP or carrier you have.

To get the free Wi-Fi, Koreans need to register for an LG U+ ID. Once that it is done, they can connect to the company's "Free_U+zone."

The way LG U+ can offer the service is that for every hour you stay connected you will have to sit through one 15 second advertisement. That's it.

South Koreans already have the fastest average Internet speed in the world and now have access to free Wi-Fi no matter where they are in the nation.

NetZero or some such free internet service back in the late 90s tried to do this for a free dial up service. As I recall due to the poor connections & download rate, getting an add as frequently as they wanted to greedily throw them at you was their downfall. I'm just wondering when or if this may become an issue for this LG subsidiary.

Can't say as I'm a little in favor of the idea though. Rings of the old out-of-air broadcasts most of us old timers grew up with. TV & radio broadcasts being the only way of getting the media entertainment full time & all. Of course, none of you younger people have ever had the privilege of seeing a sign on/off of a TV station when the FCC "MADE" them actually stop broadcasting for 'x' number of hours a day.

    One 15 second ad???

That's more than a fair trade for free service of that magnitude and stature.

Am I the only one envisioning a bunch of NORTH Koreans huddled up next to the fence trying to connect to the "free Wi-Fi" like all the cars parked outside of Starbucks or McDonalds here in the US?

"But the bigger point here is that UMG has effectively admitted this takedown was never about copyright. They demanded YouTube censor Megaupload and justify that by saying they have a contract which allows it so its fine. Its painfully clear what they would do with a law like SOPA that gives them much more power"

Reminds me of all the rednecks lined up & down between the interstate Best Western & McDonalds, switching back & forth trying to get the best download rate over here where I'm at.
