Twitter has 140 million active users

Twitter has 140 million active users, although inactive accounts are much higher.

On the eve of the company's sixth birthday, the micro-blogging service boasted some stats including the active user rate. Those users also now send 340 million tweets per day.

While the active user rate is extremely high, there are 300 million inactive accounts, as well. Inactive accounts include accounts that have never tweeted or which have not tweeted in a year.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey made the first public tweet six years ago to the day, writing "Just setting up my twttr." In the early days of the company, Twitter was known as "twttr."

In September, the company announced 100 million active users showing how quickly the platform is being adopted.

Just like I have said in the past year or so, I give Twitter 2-5 years before it goes away or no one cares about it. So we are now on the 2nd year of what I predicted and there are more inactive Twitter accounts than active... "I told you so".

Who really cares if someone is taking sh*t or washing their car, coming from a flight, going somewhere... who has time for that. The people who Tweet are just full of themselves thinking people really care about what they are doing and the people who follow them are even worse since they have nothing else better to do but follow someone's every move... "can you say stalker?"

I get complements like: "God, I can NOT get enough of your updates! They rock!" [I do not make it up, that was from yesterday].
....and re tweet much more than that !

OK, everybody can smack g_slide around, but I happen to side up with him a bit. Not once have I ever tapped twitter for any information whatsoever. Rife is the rumor mill & scuttlebutt will get a ship killed faster than a torpedo.

Yes we have an internet, but we have many more, superior established news organizations & other proper information gathering systems that use a more lax manner of getting information orientated & out to the public. Much more so than relying on the instantaneous short headline bravado & staccato of information that passes for news in less than 140 characters... I mean how are we to really to 'get the story straight'.

Does it mean the death of twitter? No, probably not, but I certainly can do without the 85% other the T&A f*king blathering morons that seem to feel they have something to offer this planet like watering the cat & feeding the plants. Frankly, who's screwing who is the oldest story on the planet & can wait for the rest of the tabloid press as well.

I just snotted in my Geritol (old folks vitamin supplement from the 'way back machine')... because despite the fact I know about the use of per-empting a twitter feed with a hash tag, your comment read like Greek to me.

It all seems to revolve back around to a previous rant of mine that relies heavily on Rick Deckard's character in 'Blade Runner' complaining that human speech had turned into 'gutter speak'. Basically a language based on several different languages all slurred together into something they hoped would cross cultural barriers into something understandable.

Twitter's great for one liners & a 'heads up' for looking to another source for information. NOT "THE" source for anything tangible. Of course, this is 'my' opinion & will probably wash like mud in some circles.

I've never seen the draw of Twitter.
I can follow all of those news orgs in G+ if I want.

Whenever I have looked at the site it is always a mashup of unintelligible crap.

@Insane3, I loled at your comment, cause its sooo true, but I never ever have a Twitter or even a Facebook account for as long as I live cause they're just a complete waste of my time and they don't value anything other than just random sayings of some people who gossip about each other. While I understand it can be used to get infotmation, its gets over abused too much by these rants and raves that people say, IMO.

Like I say before: You need to get out more often, from the rock you live under ! "Get out more often..." Just because you follow people like a "stalker", does not mean I need to get out more often, it just means you have a boring life and you follow everyone from your computer downstairs in your parents basement... or better yet from your smartphone while you are are playing hopscotch with the neighbors kids.

Why would you follow a 'rockband' as you just said? To find out they just finished a show in Cleveland and their so tired and plan to go to bed... honestly who cares. Do you want to wish them a good night kiss as you follow and tweet them back... 'can you say stalker'? Twitter is just a new digital age of 'stalking' people, rockbands, companies, etc.

If you are following that many people as the examples you listed, you really need to get out of the house and do something and make your life more interesting instead of just living through others.
