Sony to fire 10,000 employees

Sony to fire 10,000 employees
Sony has announced it will be cutting 10,000 jobs, 6 percent of its global workforce, in an effort to return to profitability.

The company has seen yearly losses for four straight years but new CEO Kazuo Hirai seems prepared to do anything to make sure the company turns its fortunes around.

Yen strength not seen since the 1940s and competition mainly from Samsung and other Korean manufacturers has led to the demise of Sony and other Japanese cos. like NEC. TV production in particular has been hit hard and Sony, Panasonic and Sharp are expected to have lost $17 billion during the last year alone, mainly on TVs.

The new job cuts will mainly "come from consolidating the firm's chemicals and small and midsize LCD operations."

Along with the cuts, the company is deciding on whether seven executive directors will have to give back their bonuses for the fiscal 2011.

They want to step on those that buy their products, I'm all for them going downhill.

And besides it's not like GryphB said anything bad about the employees, but that's just part of the sacrifice when a company gets in trouble.

Sony still has time to turn things around but they really need to start listening to their consumers; a problem that has been ongoing since they started. Their market strategies are outdated, they haven't really changed their stance since day 1, and they've always tried to fight against consumers wants and rights. Honestly I surprised a company like that even managed to make it as far as they did. But once upon a time they did have high level quality devices, so consumers could look the other way when Sony operated evil, but now even their devices are crap. They do deserve this, even if the employees don't.

I'm laughing in Sony's face too. But to any NORMAL and REASONABLE person (not you in this case), job loss is always a sad issue.

When they lay the guy next to you off, you get to absorb his entire workload. they call it profitability when it's really just over-working you to a stroke or heart attack. usually just weakens the company from the bottom up as well. beginning of the end.

Likely sony's downfall was also related to poor quality control in many of its products. I stopped buying Sony AV gear years ago after I discovered that Mastushita (Panasonic/Technics/Denon) gear I bought seemed to last four times longer. Their laptops also have very bad reputation - almost as bad as HP!!

Its a shame that employees pay for CEO's mistakes.
Samsung TVs are better. Sony keep making wrong decisions.
Hirai is the one that gotta go!!!!!!!!

Sony dug their own grave. These last 2 years have really shown the fangs of these jackals and the way they shit on their consumer base. The products they make are subpar with more problems then any other company. Sony used to be the brand you strive for and you felt proud walking around with your Sony Walkman, nowadays I'm ashamed to have a PS3 and PSP in my home nor would I ever buy another one of their products even if it actually was good because of what they represent (remove features from products, make you rebuy everything you have already bought like if your moving from psp to Vita, sue you if you try to breath life back into THEIR products (that's right read theTOS they make you agree to, you don't own your product according to them) , O yea and LIE!) Sounds like a good company to buy stuff from right..... Yeah right... Yawn. F-OFF SONY! and good riddens

O and I'm not anykind of fanboy at all, I love them all but I keep up with the underground news and read the Sony vs Geohot trial... that's where they lost me.

I agree with you, 100%. Sony has lost touch with, and lost respect for, its customers. Look how they try to lock you into their hardware. To get a memory card for one of their consoles, you have to purchase one of their proprietary solutions, which of course, only works with their console. Can you screw us any more, Sony? Oh wait, you can. Buy one of their digital cameras, and you'll have to buy one of their memory cards, at an inflated price. Really Sony? Is there any other way you can make me feel unappreciated, Sony? Why, yes there is! Look how they handled the breach of their network. At first, they notified the media of the breach, and sat back while their customer base went "WTF? What do I do, now?". No guidance, nothing. Then they recommended that people watch their credit card statements. Really, Sony? You couldn't offer to pay for a service for this, since it was *your* incompetence in securing *your* network that provided the opportunity for someone to p0wn your network? This, at least, would make their customer base feel as if the company actually cares about them. And would go a long way towards fostering a sense of loyalty. But no, their attitude is that they have done no wrong. So next they closed down their network, while they secured it the way it should have been done all along. Then, when they went live with it, they offered their users two free games, from a list of shitty games that don't sell anyways. The least they should have done is offer two games from their *whole* catalog. But I guess when you're a gamer, you don't deserve any respect. Did I leave anything out, Sony?

Yea they never told you you needed one of those ridiculously expensive memory cards to play 99% of the Vita games until you got it home and we're like, memory card required WTF?? I just spent over $300 for no memory???? The Vita is cartridge based, there is NO reason for yet another memory card. O and 1 more thing how they kept the breach a secret for a week or 2 while anything could have been done with that info.

So back to the point of this article is now they don't give a shit about their loyal employee base either that stuck around during all the BS this last year.

It's sickening really and I was die hard Sony since the Walkman...... never again!

Read the PS4 stuff about no disks or used games, only rumors right now but I wouldn't doubt it. This really shows how full of themselves all these companies are and that we can just be pushed to adopt any bullshit they are willing to serve. Some of the mindless drones will go for it but anyone with any kind of common sense will see through that I hope.
