Ericsson fined for shipping mobile network equipment to Cuba

Ericsson, the world's largest mobile network equipment maker, has been fined by the U.S. Department of Commerce for violating export restrictions by shipping equipment to Cuba.

The company's Panamanian subsidiary was fined $1.75 million for the violation and the two groups reached an agreement earlier this week.

According to sources, Ericsson had been operating a "scheme" in which broken equipment was shipped from Cuba to the U.S. for repair after employees masked the origin of the shipment. The equipment was then sent back to Cuba from the U.S., after similar masking including falsification of documents.

Ericsson de Panama voluntarily disclosed the violations after uncovering the shipments which were set up by three former employees. The employees were fired.

In total, the penalty covered 262 violations of federal regulations from the years of 2004-2007, for $320,000 worth of equipment.

Oh lord the mighty damn!!! I thought we were not supposed to accept goods FROM Cuba, not the other way around. Then there's the case that Ericsson OFFERED the information. Talk about no justice... or maybe there is, but I fail to see it being defined here.

Cuba should be liberated by now anyway. The communism we feared of the 50s & 60s is long since gone. I think we've grown up enough to know that monster in the closet isn't out to get us any more. Let those folks start earning a living again.

Agreed.........I was just about to say that this Cuban Missile Crisis crap is no longer a valid reason to ban trade.

Frankly, if I want an F'ing cigar (or whatever) from there then F YOU to the American Gov't for denying me that right. Same in this case. The U.S. really has it's priorities outta whack and the existing gov't needs to sincerely be overthrown followed by a public execution of pretty much all current members of the House, Senate and the 3 branches as well as many more.

Enough is enough. Tourism & escapism would be good for everybody right about now anyway. And don't forget Captain Ron and his crew drifted there after getting their boat hijacked by pirates.

Aside from the rabid fear of Socialism/Communism lately, Republicans would lose their only large block of Latino voters if they opened up trade to Cuba. I don't see it happening.

I don't see it happening. What Socialism? What Communism? Other than the continued dictatorship (which is what it has always pretty much been) what's to fear. Russian style communism pulled out of there 30+ years ago. Republicans are going to lose their Latino votes anyway over something completely different.

Seeing as it's going on 2 generations of gross poverty & the power to change is still within grasp... No, it might not happen within the next couple of weeks, but change is eventually going to happen & it's not going to be 10 years from now either.
