Trial begins in China over teen who sold kidney for an iPad, iPhone
Last year, shocking reports out of China claimed a teen had sold his kidney in exchange for an iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Today, the trial begins for the five people accused of giving him the illegal organ transplant.

18-year old Wang Shangkun remains in serious condition, reads the China Daily newspaper and those accused face up to 10 years in prison for charges of intentional injury and illegal organ trading.

Court documents state Shangkun contacted an illegal agency online and then agreed to sell his kidney for cash. Supposedly, the organ traders were supposed to give Shangkun 150,000 yuan ($24,000 USD) and another $10,000 in USD. Wang only received 22,000 yuan ($3500) in actuality. He then used the cash to purchase an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4S, since authorities believe he was scared to be carrying so much cash.

Wang and his mother are seeking 2.7 million yuan in compensation from the organ traders, the hospital used and a medical investment company.

Great, so stick him in jail & smack him for a bunch of money that'll never get paid while he lay dying from a botched kidney operation for botched Apple products, for which he was short changed on the whole thing anyway.

    The greed in us all.

I think that's what drives many haters and fanboys. No sex makes them irrational, angry and jumpy. :-)

I think everyone here at Afterdawn should chip in and send this kid a nice hearty kidney pie. I think it would make him feel so much better.

And no...he did not trade his kidney for iCrap...he sold it so he could be trendy with some iCrap, a moped, etc. $34,000USD doesn't make you rich in China, but it does put you well above middle class. I'm sure that if it was legal and safe, so many people in China would be selling a kidney that the price would drop under $5,000USD.

The article states that authorities *believe* he bought the Apple gear, in order to liquidate the amount of currency he was carrying. They didn't flat-out say that the victim sold his kidneys for the reason of purchasing the gear. The other side of the coin could be that the victim actually *did* sell his kidneys just for that reason. Apple is such a large manufacturing client for China, that the Chinese authorities would not want to alienate them. Apple, being such an image conscious corporation, would not want to be associated with such a tragic event. By introducing an alternative reason for the action of the victim, they produce a..."disconnect", if you will, between the Apple corporation, and the action(s) of the victim. In other words, he did it for reasons *other* than he wanted to obtain products from Apple. And of course, I could also be totally wrong here.
