Just like its cellular-based brother, the new Touch has a 4-inch Retina Display, the new "Lightning" dock connector and iOS 6.
Additionally, the devices have added an A5 processor, a 5MP iSight camera, and a new thinner anodized aluminum design. The device will also come in 5 colors, moving away from the standard black.
"With over 350 million sold, iPod is the world's most popular and beloved music player," added Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Music lovers may have a difficult time deciding between the reinvented iPod nano, the thinnest iPod ever, and the all-new iPod touch with its stunning 4-inch Retina display, 5 megapixel iSight camera and ultra-thin design--both in beautiful new colors."
Compared to the fourth-generation Touch, Schiller says the new A5 chip will deliver twice the processing power and seven times faster graphics. Additionally, the company says battery life is improved, with up to 40 hours of continuous music playback.
The iSight camera adds autofocus, 1080p video recording, video image stabilization, face detection, LED flash, and "the new panorama feature that lets you capture gorgeous panoramic photos by simply moving the camera across a scene."
Apple will bundle a color-matched "iPod touch loop" wrist strap with all devices.
The company says "pre-orders for the new iPod touch in pink, yellow, blue, white & silver, black & slate begin September 14 through the Apple Online Store for a suggested price of $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model." The device itself will ship in early October.
