Apple says iPhone 5 pre-orders reached 2 million in 24 hours

Apple announced earlier today that iPhone 5 pre-orders topped 2 million units in just 24 hours.

At 2 million, the sales number is double that of the iPhone 4S from last year, making it by far the fastest-selling smartphone of all-time.

Says Apple: "iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal. iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do."

The phone was unveiled last Wednesday and will go on sale this week in stores and online.

Apple's latest adds a new A6 processor, LTE support, a Retina Display 4-inch screen, a thinner frame and a new smaller 'Lightning' dock.

Well, until now, two serious issues with this new iCrap are well known, in addition to all the common limitations of the previous ones:

- Every ANALOG peripheral using their previous proprietary plug won't work, even with their $30 adaptor.
- It's impossible to maintain a phone conversation while connected to LTE networks, and vice versa.

Yet, so far we have, as usual, 2 million people who are (or at least should be) aware of the flaws of this device, but they have pre-ordered it anyway, and still would if Apple had announced a white brick with round corners. So, why still selling phones? Wake up! Sell $600-800 bricks instead! You've proven that you can, and that would be a much more profittable business. (Or, even better, at least, patent them before anyone else does).

Still has crap camera. Still uses crap Apple OS, still looks EXACTLY the same as the previous gens and above all else........different connector. WTF is that?!?!?!?!? Sounds like a big "F YOU" to all those with IHome docks.

As for Talking and surfing the net at the same time, I agree with follow up comment. That was on the OLD CDMA. New LTE has eliminated that drawback.

I don't know if I believe they have sold 2 million. Frankly, Apple can claim that even if it's untrue and won't have consequences. Not like it's false advertising.

And, let's remember, SGS 3 has better hardware despite being older, SGS 4 is coming next february, there are many other competitors out there, like Sony Xperia Ion (which is currently the android phone I like the most), and, of course, there is also WP8. So, yes, we'll see what happens, but Crapple will have it hard to keep up, that's for sure.

LTE is a network gen, there's no such thing as 4G it's 3g+ or LTE and then LTE-A but LTE-A can't have 3G phones on that network.

I'm guessing your talking about the mode switching like
G, E, 3G, 3G-H, 3G-H+

which no phone can switch between modes, while voice or data is connected they must be disconnected for the phone to switch up or down in modes.

It's a network limitation not a phone limitation.

Analysts are predicting around 8 million for the iPhone 5 in this opening weekend alone. That's not right it's sold above 20 million right now and Samsung expect more than 30 million GS3 to be sold worldwide before the end of the year.

Forgive my ignorance if so, but I wasn't talking about "4G" but "LTE". And not about "mode switching", but "talking while being connected to the internet on LTE networks". As far as I understood, such thing is possible having another antenna, which other models have, and the iPhone5 does not.

Ok.......to correct your thinking. "LTE" is not a "network gen". It's a generic term for "Long Term Evolution" (you no doubt know this) and is a blanket technology for packet switched networks on the cellular system. Just like computers. No more Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). All carriers will do this.........ALL. And there is such thing as 3G, 4G. It's an international standard for certain speeds, of which NO ONE has reached because 4G is technically 1GBps I believe.

You either have no clue what you're talking about or you're terrible at conveying it. No one said it's a phone limitation. Most people with beating hearts know it's a network limitation. And you absolutely can talk on an and LTE network while surfing the web. Don't henpeck!

You can... On carriers which use GSM for voice. On CDMA carriers you'd need two antennas, but the iPhone5 has only one. Hence, there is an actual phone limitation with certain carriers which could be overriden by adding an extra antenna (which other phones have).

No simultaneous voice and data for those users even on LTE. The funny part is most of the ISheep don't have a clue! It blows my mind that there's really that many people out there that is willing to part with their hard earned $ for an overpriced name! The hardware is definitely not anything great...hell, the Nokia 920 specs blow away the I5. It amazes me that CrApple can keep coming out with the same rehashed product year after year and still stay on top.

It's definitely not a network issue for Verizon or Sprint. Verizons very first LTE phone can surf the web and place phone calls at the same time. Anyone saying otherwise should stop posting and start reading.
