Woman tasered for trying to buy too many iPhones

Woman tasered for trying to buy too many iPhones
According to reports, a woman was tasered at an Apple Store in Newton, Massachusetts last week.

Xiaojie Li allegedly bought two iPhones last week at the store. Later in the week she went back to purchase two more, looking to buy the smartphones for her family back in China.

The Apple Store employees refused to sell her the last two, saying they didn't want the devices going into the black market.

Li insisted on purchasing the phones and refused to leave the store. Apple employees called the police, who tried to get the irate customer to leave but she would not and was eventually tasered. Li was then charged with trespassing and resisting arrest.

This is just a horrible story. Police acting terrible thinking they are justified. As usual. And surprisingly Apple, who wants to make their phones the only choice for consumers yet refuse to sell them to a lady due to assumptions from God knows where they they will end up on the Black Market.

I hate the Police and I hate Apple.

Astounding! Now Apple wants to control what a purchaser does with a retail product. Bad enough they rip-off the consumer at every opportunity, now one is guaranteed a shocking experience with an I-phone.

And bleep the police state torturers. My lightning strike their penii, if these p-poor LEOS can find one amongst themselves.

Honestly, i think she's full of shit saying she doesn't speak english. And even if she doesn't, if a cop grabs you from the arm (no matter what country or what language you don't speak) and point you to the door, you fucking leave. It may not be right but its better than getting tasered in the face.

Sounds like you need a good tasering then, you're not TOO bright. There was obviously a language barrier.
Two grown men having to taser a little chinese woman to get her out of the store? Really?

i dont agree with tazers.what kinda insane people invents a device to electricute and hurt people.
cops are heavy handed everywhere just do a search of youtube you will see it for yourself.
she probably understand enough english to know to leave the store but she probably wanted a reason as to why she was being asked to leave.
if someone is selling an item and someone has the money to buy it once its out of the sellers hand they shouldnt be able to dictate where it ends up unless they have an agreement between the seller and buyer before the sale is final.she had the cash to buy the phones and personally think she should be suing the store for discrimination.

Ya no, Apple (business practices) and police (not all police) members have done a lot of wrongdoing over the decades. Stop acting like they can't do no wrong which they clearly have in this woman's case.

I think it's very weird that apple watchdog's what you do with their devices. Apparently this "refusal policy" is a company wide stance and not the first time it's been in the news (see link below). If you say the product is going to an "unauthorized" country they won't sell it to you. But, what I don't understand in this situation, is why they won't sell the phones, China has the iPhone so it's going to an apple "market" country. Unless, as a company, they don't want people to undercut the cost of the phone by buying here and giving away or selling in China.

Send her back to China. Either follow the rules or face the consequences. If someone did this in china they would be sent to prison or escorted to the airport and deported. I have no sympathy for her. I am so tired of people coming her and then they want to do anything they want and when someone says follow our rules they complain. All companies have rules on the purchase of their products. Apple can set the rules and stop grey market purchases it is their product. Send her back and remove her green card she doesn't deserve one or to be here!!!

I bet the company you work for has rules. This woman needs to follow Apples rules on purchases. She needs to learn English since she has been here for 3 years. Now she will sue and get something for free costing all of us. Go to China and try this! You will be sent to prison or escorted to the airport and deported. The police were a little rough but if she was not cooperating she deserved to get tased. Ship her out we don't need someone like this sponging off us in the USA.

Lets see. The edited by ddp came to the USA and lived here for 3 years and cannot speak English. Apple has rules on buying and selling grey market phones. That is ok they make the product and can do what they want with it. So I suggest you go over and help this woman learn English, get her a lawyer so she can sue and get something for free from all of us, and help her keep her green card and take your job in the future. Yea that will work.

So many things wrong here...Apple is in the wrong for trying to limit what people do with the devices they buy (it isn't Heroin...the only iPhones in the black market are stolen), the police for using a taser where (at most) all they had to do was to each grab her by one arm and walk her to a store that sells Androids, the taser manufacturers for continuing to claim that these do not cause physiological damage in spite of the mountain of research that contradicts this claim, and the woman for trying to give money to Apple (and for not learning any english after 3 years of immersion)!

I don't see how she was breaking any rules asking to purchase a device. It isn't like she was trying to bargain with them or steal it. If she is paying for it, they are getting the money for it. I'm sure she speaks some English, it does take a while even when immersed into the society. But basic English makes it hard enough to live and buy things in our country, let alone try to figure out why she is being forced to leave and getting man-handled by two men. I already put myself in her position. Imagine walking into a store in China and them refusing to sell you a product you have the money for. No idea why, can't understand the confusing explanation. So police get called, then they start yelling at you, still confused, just want to make a simple purchase, so they pull you from the store and taser you. And you wish you were back in America, where we supposedly have rights.

Jeff7630...so you are saying that buying products in America is not helping the economy? Or she Should just send her US dollar to China and buy it over there...at least she is paying taxes. It could be worse, hispanics send money to mexico all the time and so on...and it doesnt help america economy.

-China is not taking is not taking your job. Your greedy CEO is the one to blame. The CEO or who ever is in charge of the money gets to decide where they want to spend their money on labor. If its oversea then let it be..It can be worse, hispanics are here in the usa that can actually replace you and work for cheap labor like the Chinese. so the benefit of sending work over sea is better because the Chinese will stay on there land(also many Chinese are tourist) hispanics will take your job IN the Usa and multiply their family in no time.(im not saying having a big family is a problem) the point is that China is not taking your job, your employer decide on that.

I do agree that she should learn english, however; sometimes you cant teach an old dog new trick..it could be worse, hispanics, their language is more similar to english language than the Chinese language and still doesnt learn english.

I can go on and on about this ,comparing it to a worse situation with the hispanics and many othe ethnicity. But I rather not argue with a close minded person.

Anyways calling them Chink is a bit racist.in my post, I can easily replace the word "hispanics" with "beaner" and "you" with "cracker".
But I choose not to be ignorant like some do.

The language argument is BS. I don't care what language you speak or don't speak. It can be made obviously clear that someone wants you out of the store through body language and especially when the cops show up with guns and tazers. A reason to leave? Apple didn't want to sell anything to her and that's ALL THE REASON THEY NEED in this great country. So when you're clearly told to leave and you refuse even with a cop pointing a tazer in your face you deserve every last ounce of pain coming to you.

Bottom line the law states that Retailers have the right to refuse anyone business at any time for any reason and request any said person to be removed from the premises. The minute she was ask to leave the store, that's where the talking stops and you leave.

Were the Apple employees wrong for doing this? Morally yes, legally no.

So then the police get there to help escort her off the property, from there' it's a question of did they use appropriate force to do so? In this case like many other taser cases, I would say they used excessive force, they could have just restrained her walked her out, set her free and give her a fine. If she assaults the officer then use whatever is considered equal force.

Either way in the court of the law, she's not going to find much sympathy there because she did in fact ignored Apple's request for her to leave. That's when she should have shut up and simply go to another store. I can't say she deserved what happened, but nor is she innocent.

Quote:She needs a good lawyer, sue the crap out the store, the police, and Apple for every penny that she can get. That would amount to 0 from Apple, considering the Apple employees did not demand the police to taser her and they have the right to kick her out of the store.

As for the police it would come down to proving damages, both physical and psychological and since Tasering leaves no physical mark, that would be very hard to prove and again amount to $0. Psychological damage would need a very good lawyer but considering her reaction in the store, the prosecution would easily prove the police used the quickest, safest means available to remove her from the premises. This is what makes law sad, as it usually *very rarely does not* side with police.

The Apple employees had an absolute right not to sell her additional phones. The woman refused to leave. The police were called, she still refused to leave. Then she resisted arrest. The police had every right to taser this person in order to remove her from the store and help restore civility. The woman needs to be evaluated for possible mental disorders.

Fantastic job of Jeff7630 at being a "Newbie" member and obvious Apple PR ringer. It was racist of the store to assume she was buying and selling them in China. How do they know? She could have bought 2 for her kids and then maybe talked to a sister/brother and found out their kids wanted them too. so went back when she got paid again. Or thought later in the week maybe her and her husband would like them too.

Why? because she is Asian, automatically she's doing something shady? That's racial profiling.

It is wrong for them to do it, but not illegal. Apple is a private corporation, they can be racist if they want to.

Either way in the court of the law, she's not going to find much sympathy there because she did in fact ignored Apple's request for her to leave. That's when she should have shut up and simply go to another store. I can't say she deserved what happened, but nor is she innocent.
there is no room for sound logic on the internets. :P
    lmao! ain't that the truth

But seriously why the F would you need to tasser an innocent woman. Would they do the same to a WHITE person....Probably not. The people in the shop just assumed she would sell it on a black market. Idiots should be charged, also the shop and cops. Make them pay for their crimes. MORONS
LoL...calling them morons, and saying they should be charged with racism...and that isn't a crime! Maybe they should also be charged with being supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
i thought discrimination based on race was illegal.feel free to correct me if im wrong.

besides whats been posted on here what I find odd.

Is she goes in on a Monday buys 2 phones because apple's store limit is 2 products per person per day. fine, deal done.

Goes in on a Thursday and asks to buy 2 phones get told she can't buy anything even though the above rules should apply.

it's assumed she'll sell them on the black market then gets arrested for trespass and abusing cops, bashing them, breaking police equipment etc etc etc many charges later in the slammer.

talk about over the top stuff.

there's factories in china that make the iphone for the black market anyway, foxconn probably sell the duds to the black market to make some extra cash on the side.

It doesn't even need to be stolen, the LG phones get ripped off in the same factory that makes the official LG phone, like there 2 factory production lines and 1 makes the proper product and the other is the rip off product sold for a $100 and the exact same phone bar logos.

I think there's another story here and probably apple store employees are covering it up, maybe if she had gone to another store this wouldn't have happened but she has gone to the same one.

How exactly does purchasing an Iphone from Apple and re selling it = black market. These Apple people are just so stupid I can't even believe it. This poor women goes in with her cash to buy products and is racially profiled, cops called and then tasered for wanting to legally purchase a product. I mean she is a middle aged woman they could have cuffed her and dragged her out there was no need to taser her. All the time you see cop abuse it's even worse with black people, there is no need for this racial shit any more it's 2012 for fuck sakes.

There are numerous laws that prohibit businesses from discrimination based on race, gender, age, ethnicity, etc. Has there been a change in the law? So you are saying that a restaurant (for example) can refuse to serve someone if they are "Black" or "Asian"? Maybe you should tell that to "Denny's" who had to pay out millions in fines even at the "hint" of such behaviour.

More stupid people could use a good tasering (as long as it doesn't kill them...that's going a little TOO far).
Sounds like you need a good tasering then, you're not TOO bright. There was obviously a language barrier.
Two grown men having to taser a little chinese woman to get her out of the store? Really?
I guess she didn't exhibit the sheep mentality right away, so she must have been trouble. Bad things can and will happen if you get out of the fluffy velvet rope corral.

And YOU'RE so bright you can make up BS details out of nothing??? You seem to harbor irrational hate for Apple and/or cops and you're just spewing nonsense because of it.
You seem to harbor irrational devotion to Apple, maybe that's what is clouding your thought process. As for the cops, SOME of them don't deserve to be in a position of authority.

I hope this woman sues the hell out of the store and the police. The store is for selling product so once they receive the money, and made their profit what the hell matters what is done with the product. I can't believe people can get away with this s**t. Just is not right.

sometimes people honestly become a cop to make society a better place but most become a cop on a power trip.they just want power and control.police using excessive force is nothing new (look on youtube there are thousands of incidents) , its too common.
