Mayor Bloomberg: Apple products led to increase in NYC crime

The NYPD (New York Police Department) says the annual crime rate is set to increase for the first time in two decades.

As of this week, there have been 108,432 major crimes throughout the boroughs, up 3484 compared to the same time last year.



Most dramatically, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, thefts involving Apple products (like iPhones and iPads) were up 3890 year-over-year, a massive jump.

"If you just took away the jump in Apple, we'd be down for the year," added Marc La Vorgna, the mayor's press secretary. "The proliferation of people carrying expensive devices around is so great. It's something that's never had to be dealt with before."

The trend of Apple hardware thefts outpacing other crime has been ongoing for years now.

  So the criminals have figured out what the sheep want as well, what a surprise. Congratulations to Bloomberg and his crack team for pointing out that carrying expensive electronic devices in public will result in more theft.
  This keen insight, coupled with a ban on large soft drinks, and they'll have a stranglehold on crime and obesity in New York in no time.

  the rise in crime could be due to any number of reasons even the population increase.you walk around with an overpriced item people are willing to pay a lot of money for people can and will steal it.
  

  i have the big screen tv,a ps3 and 5.1 channel surround sound.car still runs smooth and computer still works but its a bit outdated.

  Yeah thats an obvious statement. Most people walking around the city during the pre-cell phone days had $10. Once cell phones came on the scene, those people were carrying more and more expensive things that just simply got lost, misplaced, or straight-up mugged off of them.

  i still remember people in the 90s getting mugged for there shoes (the nike air jordans)

  To be honest, I'm just glad we've got a billionaire like Bloomberg sitting in on these sessions that are focused on such important issues. It's people like him, along with large corporations that really have their finger on the pulse of the people. God Bless them.
  I know that their first priority should be who stole who's ipad, lets not detract them from their quest. They are the champions for us all.
