Apple shows fear, trash talks Android day before Galaxy S IV launch

Apple shows fear, trash talks Android day before Galaxy S IV launch
Less than 24 hours before the company unveils the most-anticipated phone of the year, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller went on the defensive, attacking Samsung and Android in general.

The exec called Android "fragmented" and says Apple's research shows that four times as many iPhone users have switched over from Android as have switched from iPhone to Android.

Continuing the tirade, he added "Android is often given as a free replacement for a feature phone and the experience isn't as good as an iPhone."

"When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with. They don't work seamlessly together."

Apple and Samsung continue to battle in the smartphone market, with the companies combining for over 95 percent of all the profits in the industry. It is not often that Apple goes on the defensive in this manner, especially since it is giving extra media attention to Samsung for their big day. The company continues to have innovation issues, and its stock is 39 percent lower than it was last summer.

The thing is, they are now so ludicrously adrift on price with Android's huge range of pricing that they are painting themselves into a corner.

Android is available on cheap phones & expensive phones, ditto tablets.
    Apple just does expensive.

    I've tried both.

Apple just isn't worth the extra coin in my view.
It's a slick OS and the easy integration across products is nice.
But it's 2013 now and Android devices can do the same thing at a fraction of the cost.

I'd also be inclined to bet the house that within 5yrs the Microsoft Windows efforts will be looking strong in the market too.

...and talking BS (the 9 accounts lie) does nothing but make them look very weak & afraid for their market position.

hmm, lets just look at the fact that the apple stock 39% lower than last year, the fact that more people are using Samsung products than apple, the fact that you don't need 9 freaking accounts to get a full Android user experience (1 Google account syncs everything) After tomorrow, S4 is going to be biggest next big thing, and that is a fact.

The online experience for iPad is crap, pretty much no video can seen aside from youtube. Android is total edited by ddp for other reasons, but at least up to 4.0 it kicked ass and rendered almost every video on the net. Once Jelly Bean came out though, it is just as useless as ios. Nice job Android, you edited by ddp us on your biggest advantage. My transformer pad is better than any iPad, just for the sake that it isn't an Apple product, cuz they suck edited by ddp for not giving any extra ports for memory cards and the like. So edited by ddp apple and edited by ddp android, I'm going back to making hand puppets by candlelight

I agree android, at its core, is a great os. However, I do not like the overlays samsung has. Keep it simple and you might have me as a customer.

There was more to this article in USA today. I thought this exec was talking too much trash for my liking. I would not be surprised if this did not create a $hit storm at Apple.

But seriously, all this animosity over a group of devices, to me, seems time wasted. I get the whole price argument, the anti-corporate stuff, but really who cares? People are going to buy what they are going to buy. If its Samsung, great, if it Apple, so what. I say more choices the better for us. I wish MS would get their act straight and come in to mobile computing just to offer people a viable choice as well. Surface is a half-a$$ attempt.

Molsen, Apple cripples the evolution of devices with all that ridiculous patent lawsuits against their competitors. So, I ignore their stuff but, also, I'll be happier when they're gone. I don't deserve that to anyone else but them.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone a while back, compared with iphone, the price for the GS2 verses Apples phone was the motivation factor for me and I am very satisfied with GS2. No plans for me to switch to the Apple product when the time comes to purchase another phone in the future.

Funny thing is obviously they are worried. If Apple was such a great empire with nothing to worry about he wouldn't have said a thing! Like em or Apple, Android is here to stay and is a force to be reckoned with!

    It was embarrassing.
I felt like I ought to say nice things about it but really I was thinking my 'old' SGS2 is a much better phone - with the exception of a couple of very minor features I wouldn't use.

....and it cost about 1/3rd the i5 price.

I really think Apple are in trouble.
i5 was supposed to be where they caught up & leapt ahead.
In my opinion they didn't even catch up.

If i6 disappoints then,as far as phones are concerned, the decline could be terminal (with the exception of their die-hard fan club, of course).

Agree with the price but the upper end of the android phones will be the same price or slightly higher than an Iphone even the ihpone 5 but the android phones will have heaps of things and be much faster.

as for apple and everything just works I wouldn't agree with that, if your trying to get stuff working from apple on a pc then your stuffed every way and need extra programs to make things work, even their own software even on a mac doesn't allow for easy multi accounts to be handled via 1 computer.

I've had to fix up that problem a heap of times now.

    I completely agree.

I'd also add the reliability of their stuff leaves a lot to be desired.
A family member has a Mac Air laptop & regular as clockwork it has failed 3 times (just outside the year warranty), they fixed it twice free but he thinks they won't this latest time.
It's a know keyboard flaw too.
As he works in music it's just what everyone uses so he's a bit stuck.
You might forgive them being completely over-priced if the quality was there but it seems obvious it isn't.

I agree. Recently I had a visitor from US, using iPad and Skype to communicate with family in the US. She had some problems with the username and password which I was elected to fix. I managed the basic problem but it simply would not allow me to upgrade the application nor would it allow me to search for and add a contact. Both these options were missing and the OS would/could not do the application upgrade on its own. Did not even offer the upgrade!

Quote:...says Apple's research shows that four times as many iPhone users have switched over from Android as have switched from iPhone to Android. I find that hard to believe. Also, that coupled with the "nine accounts" statement which everybody who uses Android would know was BS makes me think he is preaching to the Apple fanbase trying to prevent a flood out the door.

I'm pro-choice and pro-saving money. The more options the better which translates to saving money and more capabilities. Android is far superior to anything right now, esp to iOS regarding having more freedom. Removable battery, external microSD (not all Android phones offer them, but most do), open file structure and media library (not locked down like iOS), multiple choices of app stores and ability to install apps from anywhere, practically free cloud music service (Google Music), infinite customizations from keyboard (no Apple doesn't have the best keyboard. Swiftkey is one example that's way superior) to launcher. All in all, Apple's primary motivation to lock a user in their ecosystem to milk him bothers me the most.

Where do I even begin to undermine Schiller?

I suppose I'll start with this sentiment:

Originally posted by Sh1thead Schiller: "When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with. They don't work seamlessly together." First off, an iPhone out of box is nowhere near as handy as any similarly-priced Android device. My last phone was an entry-level Android device, the LG Optimus S, and my current phone is an iPhone 4. Aside from higher-spec hardware, I essentially downgraded! I actually had to jailbreak the iPhone 4 to achieve the upgrade. It's for that reason alone that I can never recommend an iPhone out-of-box, unless the user is willing to jailbreak it.

As far as signing up to a dillion accounts to get the "experience iOS comes with", which is absolutely false by the way, I, as well as a dillion other usrs, only needed to sync my pre-existing Google account and all was well. For new users, ONE Google account is all that's necessary. If you want a YouTube account, you sign in with your Google account and they take care of the rest. I would know, I've set up my parents' Android devices with Google and YouTube accounts just one month ago. And those accounts are completely optional, just like on iOS.

Originally posted by Sh1thead Schiller: "Android is often given as a free replacement for a feature phone and the experience isn't as good as an iPhone." I refer to my above paragraphs.

Originally posted by Sh1t-eater-Schiller: ..and says Apple's research shows that four times as many iPhone users have switched over from Android as have switched from iPhone to Android. Well that's not biased.

Aside from that, everything Schiller went on about is nothing more than noise. A high-pitched scream from the bully that's losing. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Everything just works on Apple" is for people who have low standards or follow Apple's stupid ways of doing things to the letter. Try copying a video to your iphone. You have to go to the specific PC that's sync'd to your iphone, import the video file into iTune, make sure you check sync video to your iphone. With an Android phone, I plug the phone to the PC or email the video file or transfer the video file by Wifi Direct and/or NFC if the video is on another Android phone, done. Does iphone sound like a dinosaur or what?

That's the thing about Apple: They're on their 5th generation of iPhone running iOS 6.1.2, and aside from the inclusion of the notification drop-down that Google included light years ahead of them, it's still the same. It's 2013 and their iPhone 5 out-of-box is more regressive than polygamy!

About the only reason to ever own an iPhone in 2013 is for iTunes U, in my opinion. But then again, if you can get it on the iPod Touch, why bother with the iPhone altogether? The only reason I have an iPhone 4 is because I switch platforms on every upgrade and I missed the Mega Man winterboard theme. I also missed the near full screen album artwork when at lock-screen, and the music organization, but in 2 years time, there will be something better.

And I have a sneaky suspicion that it will be on a platform other than iOS.

I'd also like to add, that an overwhelming sized chunk of interest I have in the iPhone 4, and we're talking about a 90% chunk here (not making that figure up), can be attributed to the jailbreak teams, Saurik of Cydia, Ryan Petrich, Big Boss tweaks, pretty much anyone that has made iOS more of an open platform and the devs for jailbroken-only iPhones. And it would not be surprising in the slightest if they are the reason for a sizable portion of remaining interest in the iPhone brand altogether.

We're still awaiting Apple's show of appreciation for these jailbreak teams retaining their market share :P

Quote:...As expected, the phone has a 5-inch 1080p super AMOLED display with 441ppi... Well that cracks it. The iPhone Retina screen was a big deal but with this... coupled with a removable bettery that you can swap, I assume, with a charged one...

    On the grandma comment... my mother-in-law (my son's grandma) is eyeing off the Galaxy Note II... and that's without me having even mentioned the thing! So it's become, "even your grandma's not interested in an iPhone", hahaha. Poor Apple ;_;

    Why?

For many reasons, I agree with him. It's elegant, strong, water and dust proof, it has a quad core processor, a microSD slot, NFC, the best screen, one of the better cameras out there (if not the best), and it's not the most expensive of its high-end competitors (some of them, such as the iPhone or the Lumia 920, are quite far in price, and the GS4 costs more or less the same but for my personal experience I prefer Sony over Samsung). Of course, the Nexus 4 is currently the best device if you consider both quality and price. The Xperia Z costs about double, but it's simply the best you can get right now if you can afford it.

    I'll check it out cheers.

Edit: Wow, very nice... well between it and the other brands I'd say Apple was well and truly... well let's say Jobs got going whilst the going was good (jk).
