Netflix: Expect 4k streaming within two years

Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt has said today that he expects the company to offer 4K streaming within two years.

The company is committed to the standard, despite its large bandwidth needs.

Hunt says streaming will be the first arena for 4K, rather than in disc form: "That's because of the challenges involved in upgrading broadcast technologies and the fact that it isn't anticipated within the Blu-ray disc standard. Clearly, we have much work to do with the compression and decode capability, but we expect to be delivering 4K within a year or two with at least some movies."

The exec also notes that House of Cards, the company's original show starring Kevin Spacey, is filmed in 4K.

I think there might be some bandwidth issues to overcome first. Streaming HD is Huge so how Extra Huge will 4k be?

How about they up the a/v quality of their current HD offering instead of moving to a low quality version of 4k?

Hi-frikken-larious. They can't even serve up a quality 720p signal, and you expect me to believe they can pull of 4k streaming?!?!!!

Not to mention, there is no where near the penetration in the country, the bandwidth, nor lack of caps to allow this. What, am I going to queue up my 4k show, wait 2.5 days for it to finish, and only be alloted enough bandwidth a month to watch two movies?

According to a press conference release sometime last week, Hunt states that once the 4k compression technology has been completed, it'll be able to stream even over dial-up. This, I'm going to have to definitely see for myself.

Stream me a Blu-ray matching film with lossless audio & I'll believe this, until then, as far as I'm concerned, I'm afraid it's just PR & BS.
