Sony E3 Keynote: PlayStation 4 priced at $399 in U.S., will launch in November

Sony E3 Keynote: PlayStation 4 priced at $399 in U.S., will launch in November
Sony concluded their E3 event today by pricing the upcoming PlayStation 4, and blowing the Xbox One out of the water in doing so.

The console will sell for $399 in the U.S., $100 less than the Xbox One.

Additionally, Sony confirmed the console supports used games and does not require always-on Internet for authentication.

Microsoft should have their work cut out for them moving forward.

They actually said it would come out during the holiday season. That doesn't necessarily mean November.

True they did, but we know that means November :)

Looks like XBOX is gonna be Dead On Arrival. Only the die-hards that drink the MS Kool-aid are gonna want one. Time to make room on my entertainment stand for some Sony-Juice!

Already pre-ordered my PS4. I'll order an Xbone eventually, when it gets hacked and the price comes down. Until then, I happy.

Amazon has listed as a Nov. 30th release date, but not confirmed by Sony so either way for Xmas. The only issue Sony will have is not enough consoles to fill demand.

Well looks like Sony did what I have said they SHOULD have done:

Additionally, Sony confirmed the console supports used games and does not require always-on Internet for authentication.

I think news of this is going to KILL xbox one before they get it out to market!

Maybe Microsoft will now do an "about face" on BOTH those issues!

They had BETTER or their mareket share will go bye-bye!

    Take THAT Microsoft fanboys! LOL!

So what's the hard drive space? and can you play PS3 games on it?
Not too excited yet until I get those answers.

Thanks for the info on the PS3 games!, just found out that its a 500 GB hard drive, so I'm happy with that, I think, depending of course on how large the games are going to be for download.

I don't think you can play PS3 games on the PS4 it's a Cell chip and the PS4 uses an AMD chip the same as all the consoles now.

Yeah clearly PS4 has won. I would like to see more of confirmed specs. But if what is reported true. They truly understand who their base is. And that is the gamers. Which now have the purchasing power for their kids.

YES. $400 is still a lot but I don't know what the hell MS is thinking. Didn't they see this coming? Even for the exact same $ the PS4 wins hand down for me and I own 2 XBoxes.

    Just my $0.02,

I have a PS3 and a 360, as well. I use the PS3 mostly for blu-rays and the 360 for gaming, but it looks like my X-box gold account is going away in November. Looking forward to the PS4 that will be sitting in my living room!

That's what I am thinking. Pre-Black Friday most likely. Additionally most stores have almost a 4 to 1 ratio of PS4's vs XB1's available for pre-order ~ my best guess is it has something to do with MS having problems with eSRAM yields and why there is also another rumor going around that MS is going to under-clock the SoC because of that. PLUS the XB1 uses an external power brick (as usual) probably to help control temps...it all seems to be adding up to what may be RROD type of issues again (possibly).

That is just a place holder. It is standard business practice. Sony is holding out until Gamescom and/or TGS for more publicity on release date as well as unmentioned titles like Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian and others.

Correct...but that is what GaiKai is for to help solve with Cloud based game streaming for PS1, PS2, PSP, PSVita, PS3 & PSN titles. And not just for the PS4, but their other consoles as well (PSV & PS3). Additionally GaiKai will also support iOS & Android devices.

LoL, that video has gone viral.

Additional food for thought info ~ XB1's are only going to be available in limited markets at launch ~ Source Link

I believe this is stems from MS's new stance of "No internet? FU, Deal with it or buy a 360" ~ Source Link because of the rumored issues with the eSRAM, OR most likely both (that's what my money is on).

Lastly I have to call Sony out on something that I have ALWAYS disliked of MS doing, and that's charging for multiplayer. Yep you heard that right ~ Sony is requiring PS+ for ONLY mulitplayer and on ONLY the PS4 ~ This does not affect the PS3, PSV & PSP, only the PS4. You still have free access to use everything else just as you could on the PS3 & PSV such as Netflix, Facebook, Hulu, Game Stats & etc. but you will have to pony up for PS+ for the PS4 & multiplayer.

Now with that said, there are titles that will NOT require PS+ for mulitplayer like DCU and other Free to Play business model games. Also, you will ONLY need 1 account on a PS4 with PS+ for ALL other accounts to be able to play online mulitplayer on said PS4. So if you have family/friends you can trust, they can simply add your account to their system so they can play online for free.

I really dislike it, but in reality it doesn't actually affect me as I am already a PS+ subscriber (have been since day 1) because of the value it gave me without the need to have to pay for it like LIVE! did. BUT that doesn't mean I give Sony a pass, and I hope that changes before the PS4 releases so as to not impact others gaming experience...

With the beauty of hindsight I predicted that. :P Sony observed the widespread acceptance of Xbox's Live Gold and made a catch-up decision based on that.

I can understand why you feel let down. Depending on the price of PS+ for PS4, it's not so bad. Do you know anything about pricing structure here? Do you expect your existing PS+ account to transfer to PS4? I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that it will.

Whether you agree or not x360 Live Gold was widely perceived to have better online multiplayer than the PS3... one reason people were happy to pay for it. It was considered a drawback of the PSN. If multiplayer for PS4 is deemed to be better because of paying for it (or if it actually does improve*) ...then it's a fait accompli. At least you get all the other stuff thrown in too (something I notice Live is playing catch-up on).

Though I can see a problem for publishers if they charge for multiplayer for their game on top of PS+. They will stick to DLC to add value imo though.

*Neither console makes it's feasible to play internationals from Oz.

It was confirmed by Jack Tretton on stage at the E3 event on Monday that current PS+ subscribers accounts will carry/transfer over to PS4. PS+ is $49.99 for the year with I believe a promotion offering a $10 credit towards anything on the PSN, there's also a three month package for $17.99. Currently you get all of the below on day one of your subscription and more every month then on ~

    PS3 Titles
    Uncharted 3
    LBP Karting
    XCOM
    Machinarium
    Deus X
    Pinball Arcade
    Vanquish
    Joe Danger 2
    The Cave
    Labyrinth Legends
    Malicious
    Knytt

    PSVita Titles
    Uncharted Golden Abyss
    BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend
    Germinator
    Gravity Rush
    Wipeout 2048
    Soul Calibur Broken Destiny

    Other Benefits
    1GB Cloud Storage for PS3
    1GB Cloud Storage for PSVita
    Auto Firmware & Gamepatch updates
    Auto Gamesave Upload capability
    Free themes, avatars etc
Access to closed betas + early demos
    Full game trials

Additionally when the PS4 releases PS+ will be offering 3 PS4 games for free. Driveclub (a launch title) is one of them that is confirmed. That's honestly quite a ridiculous amount of value for the cost of investment, and why I have been a subscriber since day one. Actually, I'm about to buy another year pretty soon as I was going to purchase Driveclub on day one with my PS4's! So because PS+ saved me that money I will put it towards extending my subscription (which is already about a year and a half out as it is from promotions I jumped on).

I agree/disagree to an extent that LIVE! had "better" online mulitplayer. Specifically because the only difference was that LIVE! had cross game chat which is the only explanation people could come up with that made it "better". Whereas the actual gaming part of the multiplayer (which is truly the important part of it) is either equal to each other because they offered the same experience for gameplay, or the slight edge has to go to the PS3 because the PSN has/had more dedicated servers along with the PSN being free. Do I see the convenience & benefits to XGC? Yes ~ but IMHO it's not worthy of being the deciding feature of being the "better" multiplayer aspect having the cost of being able to do so as the only real difference factored in. Oh I forgot to mention that Cross Game Chat will be available on the PS4 as well next gen.

As for as LIVE! trying to catch up when it comes to additional other stuff, they better start doing more, because at this point they are only offering 2 Xbox 360 games per month and have said absolutely nothing about what extra benefits the XB1 will get with it (if any at all).

Can you tell me why for Aussies PS+ is $70.00 then???

I expect we'll be paying considerably more for games (and the machine itself) here again.

The ONLY upside here is that being region free PS4 games will be cheaper to buy from overseas.

SCE are obviously moving to rectify the perception (right or wrong) of online multiplayer on PSN ...starting with chat.

Yes well, it's escaped MS that whatever people mostly do with their consoles they want their primary purpose to be for playing games. It seems that MS forgot that we are in the midst of a global downturn and that money is scarce.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Sorry Jem, can't really say why Aussies pay more...their economy? Strength of their money? Government Trade Agreements? I dunno.

    It's called price gouging. :/

Sony are just doing what everyone else is. There's been commissions into it in Oz where companies such as Apple have been subpoenaed to appear. As far as I know no satisfactory answers has been given.

I might note here that there seems to be a trend to PC gaming atm. Today for instance, I'm putting together a HTPC for a client with TWO (that's right, you heard me) GTX-780 cards. And he's not the only one!

EDIT: Here's one just for you... someone had a look behind the Xbox curtain at E3 and discovered they were demoing the games from a Win7 PC with Nvidia 700 series cards (probably 780s or Titans). Not even AMD! It's possibly a dev kit but it ain't a good look. Meanwhile Xbox fan sites are said to be in disarray.

Actually from what I read they couldn't have been dev kits as those type of kits don't run Windows. They should be running just the Game OS type of environment WITH the kind of hardware that the system is based on. Definitely not Nvidia tech when the XB1 is AMD based. But this is no surprise to me...been saying it for years when it comes to MS. No different then the old Gears of War fake screen captures (bullshots).

    16.6.2013 13:45 #22

  • Jemborg

Yes, well a dev kit has a regular poot attached.

These aren't even debug consoles for running early game code.

Win7 even haha... so why do we need a XB1?

Yes, my client has been threatened with banning on fan sites where he boasts about the new kickass gaming rig I'm building him in lieu of buying an XB1.

    Did I mention i5, TWO GTX-780s 6G DDR5, 8G 2400mhz DDR3, 900w 160amp PSU all packed into a cute console-like Silverstone GD05 case?

It even looks better than an XB1 :D
    http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=241

And after all that I'll bet he gets a PS4 one day to play Uncharted 4.

(You did say that was in development?)

Exactly (about why needing an XB1). As for Uncharted 4 here is a little tid bit of info that kind of explains the situation while delving into all the unannounced upcoming games for the PS4 ~ Link
