Sony: We will not take losses on PS4 like we did on PS3

Sony: We will not take losses on PS4 like we did on PS3
Sony Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato has made it clear that the upcoming PlayStation 4 will not cause the company severe losses like its predecessor the PS3 did.

The new console features a processor from AMD, which comes a lot cheaper than Sony's own proprietary Cell chip used in the PS3.

"The amount of investment is much, much smaller, [than the PS3]" Kato said. "I cannot give you the absolute amount."

Sony had to writedown over $3.5 billion in losses for 2007-2011 on the PS3. The console finally became profitable late in 2011.

"We will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3," added Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Keep it affordable and it might happen.

Listen to your consumers and make the changes fast. Don't muddle gaming with politics and SONY might have a medium-sized advantage over Xbox.

They're on the right track so far. The ball is definitely in their court right now. It's their's to lose.

Since both of these new consoles will essentially be mid-level x86 gaming boxes, I'm eagerly anticipating the emulators =) ...

The console HARDWARE became profitable in 2011...the platform was profitable before that because of the $20-$30 per game markup they put on every game sold. I would hope that people would not pay $400 for a $350 PC with fewer features and more expensive software...but unfortunately it will probably do very well, especially if tech savvy people like the AD crowd are actually pre-ordering.

That might be a bad idea...there will be no backward compatibility and the launch lineup doesn't look too great yet...Unless you have a gaming PC or you intend to turn xbox live back on after a while.

Who is still taking preorders? Gamestop isn't. Oh well. As long as I get it before Christmas my kids will be happy. Got $220 trade in for my old "like new" Wii, PS3 & some games.

You may have issues getting one before Xmas then unless you get yours on ebay. Something tells me Sony isn't going to have enough consoles to please everyone considering they have stopped taking orders.

Sony are only making so many PS4's at the start and have told stores they will only get X amount to cover so many pre-orders to a certain date after the launch then it's a lottery type system as to what country/store get stock to cover further pre-orders after that, this is for the global market not just the US market.

Once all the pre-orders are done or mostly done then stock can be sold on the shelf at stores.

How long the wait is who knows as there already a million or more already pre ordered around the world.

That's what I got when I pre ordered mine and I'm in the lottery system with my pre order so see what happens I guess.
