Apple unveils iPad Mini with Retina display, A7 processor

Apple has unveiled their iPad Mini with Retina display today, a huge update to their popular tablet.

The new device will have a 2048 x 1536 resolution, matching that of the iPad Air, and under the hood is the new 64-bit A7 processor.



Apple would not say when the tablet will be available except to say "in November," starting at $399 for Wi-fi/16GB model and in white/silver or gray/black.

The company has been rumored to be seeing manufacturing delays for the Mini Retina display.

In addition, last year's iPad Mini will see a small price drop to $299. If you want 128GB model of the iPad Mini 2, that will cost you $699 to start.

  I like apple products but the price on the iPad mini is just brutally high. I'd go nexus 7 all day every day

Anyone with a brain, like myself, knows to not jump aboard the bandwagon when they release a new device. I'm 3 generations behind on the iPhone now (which still gets updates and works great) and 2 behind on the iPad.
  
  It's dumb to "upgrade" each time they make a new device, because let's face it: those devices aren't much of an upgrade from the previous iteration!

No different than the predictions of death of Microsoft by many people that still has to happen. I guess the difference is that Apple was on life support back in the late 90s and practically died then until they got bailed out and used that money to reinvent themselves.

  A "fall" does not necessarily mean the end of the company; that's a false assumption, even though it's quite possible.
  
  Apple has already been through this cycle, hate to break it to you; that's exactly why they were screwed up in the '90s. Do a little reading on the history of Apple, the original Apple I/II/IIGS, and the Mac; Apple's missteps cost them HUGE amounts of money and semi-permanently relegated them to a distant 2nd in the PC market. An example: Complete lack of support of the IIGS, a very viable - and initially quite popular - platform that fizzled. There was simply no reason for it.
  
  Some of those mistakes are still around to bedevil 'em, too. From my experience and from reading the web and various books, here's a few:
  - Over-dependence on proprietary, very expensive standards for cables/peripherals, along with poorly-justified blacklisting of 3rd-party equipment. Ask anyone with a 3rd-party charger for iPhones and a new iPhone 5S, how they feel about that.
  - High prices for slightly (or sometimes VERY) dated equipment.
  - High prices for often somewhat shoddy construction. Ask anyone who owns/owned an iPod for years, how that "clicky wheel" fared, for example. Or ask an iPhone 4 owner if they're "holding their phone right" - lol. They're liable to throw it at you!
  - Over-dependence on past innovation.
  - Terrible local security for Macs, from Day One. Macs still are the quickest "in-person"-hackable computers at grey/black-hat hacker conventions, without exception.
  
  There's more, I'm sure, but I'm no expert.
  
  I like Apple products just fine, *as devices*. But many of their choices are a VERY bitter pill to swallow, and I simply refuse.

  despite my "no" to apple tabs so far, ipad mini 2 is very impressive for me, and please don't compare nexus 7 to ipad mini 2, it's nadir and zenith.
  my only complaint about current tabs is that i don't find a full office in a good tablet. win 8.1 tabs have full office, but given their app optimization for tabs, i am not interested. their price cannot be justified either; more overpriced than ipad.
