Your PS4 will lack tons of features out of the box, require immediate update
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will require an immediate update right of the box, otherwise many features will be useless to you.

The 300MB update will allow you to playback DVDs/Blu-rays, allow you to use Remote Play on the PS Vita and play games as they are being downloaded in the background. Additionally, the update will add the ability to record and upload gameplay.

Even with the update, Sony adds that "some features will not be available at launch, such as "suspend/resume mode" which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game."

The PS4 launches on November 15th in North America.

Releasing the ability to do a basic function of playing blu rays and DVDs on an update? lol I also thought that game recording would be there too, what a let down.

It's available on day one so is it really that big of a deal? I cannot think of many modern electronic devices that have an OS or firmware that do not have some sort of update right away or shortly after it is released.

Piracy measure, They figure if the system gets cracked they can implement updates to patch it up, but what if someone buys the system with the sole intention is to crack it? Well in order to basically use it you will be forced to update so a way of systematically getting every possible new device to do an update regardless when bought to ensure their security patches are being applied to all systems... that's what i'm guessing anyways

I actually cancelled my pre-orders because I saw no value in it any more. Too many game delays into next year: and if they really couldn't launch games this year, maybe they should have held off on next-gen wars until next. Sony had a strong lead in support out of the gate, but after all the delays on most games I can't be bothered. Now Xbone looks even more attractive at least based on launch titles, but truth be told I just going to wait until next year and spend the $ I was going to use back on my kids this xmas with no regrets.

seriously? why not just ship it with them so it works out of the box...unless of course the issue arose later on which it probably did...

Probably because they manufacture these devices months in advance to build up stock all while the company is making updates to the software to make the device work better. I agree that the whole play bluray and DVD thing is a bit ridiculous though. If I expected one company to have that ability ironed out it would be Sony since they are one of the big companies behind bluray.

After all the delays? I can find only two games that are delayed. That seems like a lot to me. You know that's most of their games.i can't be bothered.

Wasn't one needing internet for the xbone gonna be a problem for people who still dont have internet? If someone doesn't have internet and already pre ordered the ps4, how are they supposed to watch and play dvd/ blu rays?

One you needed to be connected all the time to play. The other just need an update to enable features. Most updates happen through the game themselves for people who don't have the net. But since this is the launch and its too late patch games because they have already been copied.

If you read Sony's blog post on the 1.5 update, it says quite clearly that in order to use the Blu-Ray and DVD video player features, you must be connected to the Internet after the update. I'm guessing to download even more software, like the video conversion tools on the PS3 do. So, the PS4 DOES require an Internet connection to use some features right out of the box.

Plus, how are updates delivered? Is there still the download to a USB option like PS3 has? I have no Internet connection in the room I would choose to use a PS4 in if I wanted it entirely as my DVD and Blu-Ray entertainment center. So, I'd guess I'd be SOL as I wouldn't buy one, then.

After all the hype the truth is coming out, no CD or MP3 playback, DNLA/networking media issues and you need a net connection & update for even getting DVD/Blu-ray playback.

I'm sure there will be some sort of work-around with getting it on a card/stick but it's hardly convenient & I can't help thinking that if this was the Xbox we'd never hear the end of the complaints about it.

It's funny how people quickly forget that the ps4 is a gaming console first and how people can't seem to read. For at least the first update you will be able to install it from a USB stick but you do have to put it into safe mode first. As far as mp3 and a few other things missing, they may be added as Sony is looking for feed back on it. There is a lot of things that I don't like about the ps4 that Sony has not added to it or make comparable with it. This still does not mean that I am going to act like a spoiled little kid about it. (Like most here seem to do)"I can't be bothered".

Consoles are complex things nowadays and updates are par for the course.

Is it that big a deal really? The first update will probably need the internet then after that the updates will be included on the game discs probably, as they are.

My crackpot theory: In an effort to push the console out as early as poss they left some of the programming a bit late. Heheh. They got the developer kits working though.

I'm not saying it would be as intensive as the PS4's update but I would not be surprised if the xbone needed one too.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.
