Xbox One reaches 1 million sales on first day of availability
Microsoft has boasted that over 1 million Xbox One units were sold during the console's first day of availability.

The figure surpasses that of Microsoft's predecessor, the Xbox 360, and matches Sony's recent PlayStation 4 launch.

Xbox One consoles went on sale in 13 markets on November 22nd, and Microsoft also added that many retailers had sold out and that the company was working to replenish stock.

Sony and Microsoft are leading a revival of the gaming industry, which just had its biggest growth in over two years, even before the launch of the new next-generation consoles.

With the 13 markets to 1 market, how many did Sony sell in just 1 market?

Hasn't there been problems with the PS4 being behind MS in production.

I'm not sure that PS4s are available to people here unless they'd preordered them.

I don't want to come across as a fanboy here but COD:Ghosts and Battlefield4 are running at 720p on the Xbone and 1080p on the PS4...

Let's be honest, the market number doesn't mean squat. If you put up 1 million consoles of each only on let's say Amazon, they both would have sold out. If anything PS4 won the FleaBay flipping contest because it's 100$ cheaper and they both sold for about the same amount 680-700 ish

It's always amusing to read the forums when the extreme console fans carry on flaming each other about which console has the better graphics and how one looks better than the other.

The terms "consoles" and "graphics" shouldn't be used together. If, to these gamers, graphics are so important then why in the heck are they even playing on consoles.

    It just doesn't make sense.

It does if you factor in money...

I have some meagre grasp of this "graphics" you talk of wise one. I just finished a case modded OCed build that includes TWO Nvidia 780s and 2400mhz system ram. It's a dream machine which even includes a Samsung 500gb Evo SSD just for the installation of games alone (apart from a 128 gb Sammy 840 Pro SSD for the system). I can't be stuffed listing the other parts. This is a sourced parts system that costs over $3000AUS and if you walked into a shop and asked them to build it you would be up for a lot more. Never mind it's a specialist HTPC build to top it off. When you game on this rig every setting is set to max... and stays there.

Yet, even I! can be gracious enough to admit, because of optimisation, consoles offer pretty good bang-for-buck... and I've seen plenty of good looking console games.

Na, I was just shocked at the difference this time around. It's a "real-world" tangible difference between the consoles' performance and not just my fanboy opinion. I didn't think it would be so evident. Unless that link got it wrong. I would have thought xbone enthusiasts would be secretly disappointed. Yet the person I built the above, ahem, "extreme" rig for has bought an xbone as well! ...simply because he has old gaming buddies in that online "xbox live" circle.

It worth noting there is a worldwide shortage of DDR5 (because of disaster) which the PS4 uses... which might account for its production shortages.

PS: I also own an OUYA. :)

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Agree on almost all of your points (investment cost vs graphics value, optimisation etc) but there are two areas I am not too sure of. One is the "worldwide shortage of GDDR5"...from all that I have read/understood is that DDR3 was more affected by price because of the Hynix fire in China a little while back while GDDR5 dropped in price enough to jump from the rumored 4GB to 8GB for the PS4.

The other is that "there been problems with the PS4 being behind MS in production". If anything it was the reverse because of Sony using a supposed newer 3D stack manufacturing process (that they first implemented in the PSV) that allowed more layers (12? I believe) for the die production (or something to that effect...can't find the exact article I read atm) which really helped to increase the wafer yield.

Whereas MS were way behind due to OS and hardware issues stemming from eSRAM yield issues and general manufacturing problems (this is the only info I could dig up quickly ~ here).

At a computer shop that wanted to check out that build of mine above (fair dinkum) they had posted a notice at the entrance referring to recent global GDDR5 shortage. I've just spent an hour trying to find out what's what and I'm still unclear whether it's DDR3 or GDDR5. It's just an impression I formed that Sony were not quite up with the initial demand yet. If I'm wrong... good. It's my bad I neglected to type a question mark at the end of the first sentence in post #5.

I'm pretty disgusted to note the PS4 is only $50 cheaper in Oz than the xbone rather than $100. This is on top of the already inflated prices we get here. I guess we're stupid enough to pay it.

It's suggested here that according to Cenry "... certain third-party developers managed to convince them that it was a really bad idea..." to have only 4gbs. So I imagine, in reality, it was a number of factors that influenced that decision... and a good thing too.

Fresh! This article has a go at the Xbone for not being anywhere near as good as the new "Steam Machine" for the same price. (PS4 does not come in for quite the same comparison apparently). I note: a $1500US Steam Machine will get you a Titan gpu and i7, which would be great if you could boot a dual OS on it.

But! both consoles will have 1 million available at launch everything was sold out so this means that a lot of people return with an empty hands to their homes.,i means that if Xbox will take more units to the stores at launch the story will be different.

    What does that matter?

Are you saying that if the X1 were only available to one market on launch day that there would still be units sitting on shelves?

I am not speaking for the person in which you were asking the question but I can speak from experience and my own eyes that there are XB1's sitting on shelves while the PS4 shelves are empty. The demand is not there for XB1's like the PS4.

The market is showing that the PS4's 1+ Million sales in just 2 markets vs the XB1's 1 Million in 13 markets are struggling to be able to match it's direct competitor is a clear indication the XB1 is not the console of choice. Even more so now that the PS4 has released in another 20 something markets and to still release in another 10 I believe. Here is a better way of looking at it ~

Quote:For a fair comparison you need to look at the size of the markets.

    Australia - 23,257,382
    Austria - 8,501,502
    Brazil - 201,032,714
    Canada - 35,158,304
    France - 65,806,000
    Germany - 80,548,000
    Ireland - 4,585,400
    Italy - 59,829,079
    Mexico - 118,395,054
    New Zealand - 4,479,000
    Spain - 46,704,314
    United Kingdom - 63,705,000
    United States - 317,121,000

Total MS market for XB1: 1,029,122,749 people.

Total Sony market for PS4: 352,279,304 people.

Sony sold approximately the same number of consoles to nearly 1/3 of the population.

    <Quoted from online>
The PS4 should easily sell 3 Million PS4's by the end of next month (if not more).

But you must remember that about 1 million consoles were available at launch for Xbox 1 .How many consoles were available at launch in each country from a total of 1 million?

Exactly, which makes it even worse for the XB1 since there are less in each market and still some that were left on the shelves. I.E. Less demand.
