Hundreds of Xbox One users: Our disc drives don't work

Hundreds of Xbox One users: Our disc drives don't work
According to Kotaku, there are at least hundreds, if not thousands of new Xbox One owners whose disc drives simply don't work.

Microsoft does not have any response other than to contact customer service.

Angry customers have begun calling the drive the "Disc Drive of Doom," as it does not read discs and produces a loud grinding noise when optical media is inserted.

As even more proof of the issue, launch edition consoles sent to major gaming outlets IGN, Polygon and GamesRadar all had faulty drives.

Adds Microsoft: "The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We're working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers.

Customers have the option for us to send a replacement console right away without waiting until they have returned their old one. This means a customer only has to wait a matter of days, rather than weeks to get back up and running."

People are actually surprised by this? I guess there are still tons of id10ts out there that haven't realized that they shouldn't go out and buy things upon first release.

Sounds like the original xbox where the magnets would slip. A simple drop of super glue on the drive magnet would fix these... But who wants to void their warranty?

You would think they would test units before sending them to major review sites... just saying.

Who is the drive manufacturer? I know LiteOn, LG, BenQ and Samsung have all made drives for past Xbox consoles.

Can they make replacement units fast enough for all the failures? If they are in a hurry, how good do think the rma units will be??

    AMD Phenom II X6 3.2GHz
    SSD w/1TB Data Drive
    16 GB Memory
    nVidia GTX 760

I'd be more worried about people taking advantage of the return policy and just ordering a spare before xmas. if I had a kid that was expecting one for a gift I'd get the spare and return whichever one survives till mid january.

I'm shocked that after the 360 overheating issue, that people trusted Microsoft enough to buy the console on release.

The article fails to tell you that if you choose the option to have a replacement shipped out to you instead of repair/waiting, M$ will put a $500+ hold on a credit card....

Unfortunately we are the regression testers these days as mfg's prefer to release early and avoid quality checks off the line. It's the new age of cheap and fast, in the real meaning of cheap not inexpensive.

I haven't seen a lot of these come back yet were I work but by Monday I should see if this is a real problem or not, you always have a small percentage of bad equipment, 2% or less is normally except-able. So if it is only 100 to 1000 units that might not be outside of the except-able launch quantities.

PS4 was the true console everyone wanted for our Black Friday launch on Thursday of course now. We didn't have even close to enough of those but had twice as many PS4's to sell then Xbox One's.

Can't you just take it back to the store and get a replacement? Most store have some sort of early return policy or is that just Australia?

I got mine on day one. When I put in Forza, it didn't read the disc. I took it out, put it in upside down, and it still didn't work (of course). When I took the disc out and put it back in correctly, it worked fine, and the drive has been problem free since.

The problem with getting a replacement, which is exactly what you should and can do is; will the store have a replacement for you? or will you just get a refund and go though the wait process to get another later? We had limited quantities and will be getting more soon just for that reason but people will have to wait either way... But that is always the problem with buying from the first release of most things, and they are the most riddled with problems too, sometimes it doesn't pay to be first unless you are really lucky.

As for which console is better I will wait until south park decides for me after their 'game of thrones' parody.

Mr-Movies, 100 out of 1000 units defective is a 10% failure rate which is not good as normally it will be 1 maybe 2% but not 10%.

You obviously didn't read my reply correctly DDP as 100 to 1000 units might be acceptable as I STATED if you go back and read it before reacting, since the release amounts were probably in the tens of thousands if not hundred of thousands.

    @ Mr-M

I'm pretty sure the it will be a similar picture in Oz. People needing replacements will probably get one from the shop they bought it at... they'll have to wait till more stock comes in if they're sold out... or get a refund.

A mate of mine bought an xbone, he's had no trouble as far as I know.

Originally posted by 97484782: As for which console is better I will wait until south park decides for me after their 'game of thrones' parody. But Princess Kenny has already stated that the Xbone is aligned with the 'forces of darkness'... which may be a good thing. Depending on your point of view. :D

But South Park has nailed it imo. This time around, it comes down solely to 'what are your (online) mates getting?'.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Im sure that I would not trust some of the people to actually send a broken unit back. Do you think good faith is relevant?

It is better to wait for 6 months before getting a new console.
So you have more games and most issues are fixed by then.
