Apple iOS 7.1 to add new Car Display

Apple iOS 7.1 to add new Car Display
According to the latest beta, Apple's upcoming iOS 7.1 will bring a new Car Display mode.

The update allows customers to "attach an iOS device to a compatible car center console via either wireless protocols or over a USB cable. An iOS interface for managing Maps, Messages, and Music then appears on the car's display."

Apple's latest beta for iOS 7.1 has added the ability to enable the "Car Display" mode in the Settings app. Additionally, the source code shows a large increase in reference to the car mode from beta 1 to beta 2.

The update is set for an early 2014 release.

What is that picture for the article? Is that "Apple in the car"?

I can almost see where this is going, where your iDevice, which already goes everywhere you go, becomes the center of your car audio system. It has a data connection, so maps, news, weather, etc can be delivered right to you in the car. It is equipped with GPS, so it always knows where you are. This may even lower the cost of entry into a high end car audio system. Definitely "out of the box" thinking going on, here. And in full disclosure, yes, I own several Apple products, as well as multiple PC desktops and laptops, Android phones and tablets, multiple ereaders, and an old laptop running Backtrack Linux. I wonder if I left anything out...

Wonder if GM is on board? They regularly update my 2013 Equinox infotainment system, and I can connect via Bluetooth or USB to it with my phone right now. Hmm...

And besides, have you seen the way these are built now? CD player is beneath the touch screen console, the built in buttons on the console and steering wheel... it's not like my old cars where you pop out an old cassette deck and instant upgrade in minutes!

Yeah, I hear ya. With a lease you really can't do anything. Though, with my Camry (non-lease), I took it to car audio specialist and had everything replaced. Expensive, but worth it.
