When you can hook up a couple of external drives of 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4 or 6tb etc (to back up game stuff as well as the usual media playback uses (so long each is over 250gb) why does anyone really care?
I can see that for a handful it might be inconvenient but with XB1 having this option (& similarly the PS4 allowing a replacement drive of up to 2tb) why is the hard drive these units are sold with seemingly such a big issue for some?

To me it is simply a matter of waste...I wouldn't even consider buying a 1TB drive for a laptop or something, if I go out and buy a 1TB xbox one, I am essentially paying for a crummy little 1TB drive that I don't want...and hard drive upgrades on the xbox one are a total pain, and result in a voided warranty. Yes, you can use one of your (only) three USB ports for an external drive and you might even get better performance from that drive if it is a good model...but most people wouldn't NEED to do this if 2TB drives were available from the factory. As for the PS4, it is much easier to upgrade to a larger hard drive but you still have the wasted 500GB drive sitting on a shelf.
Also, microsoft/sony get good prices on hard drives; their price for a 2TB drive is much lower than my price for a 2TB drive, even if you ignore the cost of the 500GB/1TB drive that I'd be removing and never using for anything. The price difference for Microsoft to go from 1TB to 2TB would be tiny compared to the cost of buying a 2TB and installing it into the system, or even the cost of buying an external 1TB drive.
And of course, there is the issue of long term use. When compared with PC, any console will look terrible in every way except two: first, while the PC will need upgrades every 2-3 years, the console will remain current for 5-6 years (maybe not current...more like outdated before launch but with new software being made 6 years later). Second, the console should be small, quiet, etc. If you are making a console that ships with a drive that will require an upgrade (and is specifically designed to make internal upgrades difficult and warranty voiding) long before the 5 years, you just ruined the only two reasons to buy a console other than exclusives.

I just know that I don't know too many people by now without a collection of hard drives sitting around after upgrading for media players & PCs & even the last round of consoles.
So I still don't see why it's really such a big deal to some.
I'm just waiting on prices to drop some more & the game libraries to fill up some more, an XB1 with a few 2.5" drives sitting around or on top of it isn't fussing me much & neither will the PS4 with a 2tb drive in it (although I hope this is upgraded well beyond 2tb, especially if 4k playback turns out to be worth it by then).
