Report: Windows 10 now installed on 100 million PCs

Report: Windows 10 now installed on 100 million PCs
According to insider sources, Windows 10 has now surpassed 100 million installs, a major milestone for the operating system.

That number is also likely to jump in the near future as Microsoft just signed a deal with Baidu to launch Windows 10 in China.

Additionally, Microsoft is expecting a boost in October when they introduce the Surface Pro 4 and other updates to the operating system.

Microsoft has long claimed they want 1 billion Windows 10 users across all platforms within 3 years of launching the operating system and they appear to be off to a strong enough start.

MS has been downloading Win 10 on your eligible machine unless you knowingly stop and remove it according to previous posts and articles. Guess they must be counting that process to make up large numbers. How about taking away the numbers of people that opt out of this download and the number of people that later remove Win 10 after trying it?? Personally, I am avoiding it and know several people that went back to a previous OS (not one actually kept it).

I installed it on my parents computer and reverted back to Win 8.1 after they test drove it for 2 weeks.
Had a hell of a time reverting as it borked the restore files and process.
And I'm also hearing things that Microsoft will be pushing Win 10 regardless of you accepting it or not.
When that day comes, my parents are getting Linux Mint.

Well, I got to say. I moved from 8.1 to 10 and I like it! No issues, runs smooth, and works great with my Xbox one. I love the fact that I can stream my Xbox to my PC. As I only have one TV in the house, it's great to at last play MORE than I did before. Got a windows phone for my little one too which is great! syncs up real good to the PC and has the option to track the phone too using my login details on any computer.

They reverted back? I would rather use a abacus then W8.1.

I can say that I have been averaging 2 installs a day for W10 and of the business customers, none want 8 back. The only few from my home users that want 8 back are the ones that really didn't need it in the first place.

Please post why it is worse than W8?
So because people want to do whatever they want to do, they are sheep?

Nah, where I am from sheep blindly follow. People clearly see that they do not want W8 and with support for W7 dieing eventually, why wait?

I think most of the people that got Win 10 got it if they wanted it or not.
Those that kept it probably didn't read the new terms and conditions that came hidden with it.
I think part of what I read was MS owned whatever was on your computer.
Try turning off the "phone home" software included. You have to do a reg edit to get rid of some but you are unable to turn it all off.

Windows 10 is a vast improvement over 8 and 7, As for the Oh noes Windows 10 be spyin on me crowd....don't you worry, they've been doing that since Vista. the only difference is they flat out tell you there doing it with Windows 10.

My only complaint with Windows 10 is Microsoft thinks that they know my hardware compatibility better than the man who built the damned thing, forcing drivers the same way they do updates needs to change.

Wait until a forced driver update crashes your computer or makes your device unusable. Download a movie and watch the fines come in from the Hollywood crowd. Try using your scanner or other added hardware only to see it does not work properly anymore. Go ahead and buy useless apps which are available free on it's origin website, your rich so who cares. Wait until you really need an important, previously working, software program that no longer functions properly anymore get you down on your knees. I am not an advocate of Windows 8. I use 7. Maybe within the year Windows 10 will work properly ? Right now it totally stinks. Totally.

I'm one of those who installed Win10. We've got it on 3 of 6 PCs at home, not business. Only 1 of those PCs still uses Win10 as the primary boot OS. All 5 of the rest are using Win7Pro-SP1. I liked W10, but won't put up with the forced upgrades and on 2 of the PCs we still run Media Center. I've tried other PVRs and other OS's ( W8-yuk, W8.1 w classic shell, Linux flavors: Mint, Ubuntu and Xubuntu, even Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi ) but Win 7 is most comfortable and we'll wait to see if MS ever fixes W10 and doesn't continue to demand the auto-updates.

Yes maybe, but they didn't use key loggers and turn on your microphone and camera with Vista or 7, or claim all data on your computer as their own.
They think if they make it free they are free to help themselves to whatever you have on it.

Windows Vista & 7 didn't have Voice Commands and Face Recognition. Cortana also needs to compile a database about you the same as Apples Siri.

Both Windows 7 and Vista had a Vulnerability that allowed remote access to both the microphone and the webcam, a vulnerability that was never patched coincidence...highly unlikely.

its all moot though as all your alarming privacy concerns can be turned off, there are programs out there that do it in on click.

That simply does not matter; I will not have a part in any OS that ships with so many intentional dire security holes.

You are allowed to like it exactly as much as you wish, but please stop acting so surprised when people do not want to participate in Microsoft's forced experiment.

I agree it looks good, but Mint wouldn't stay connected for more than 24 hours on the system I tried it on - the wifi drivers apparently didn't like something, while Win7 stays up for months at a time - literally. So, for me it wouldn't work. I did like the way it looked and the ideals behind it.

lol Most of us do a bit of hacking that's part of the fun for some, it's just a move on from when we were at school and started picking each others locker locks. Now it's computer locks, repacking computer programs is pretty basic stuff.
True if you got caught you stuffed up in some way.
You do have blinds or curtains though don't you?
Don't care about privacy? post your bank account details for us then.
I am unable to comment on how good Windows 10 is for a business, we use 7 at work (I use a modded version of Vista and Linux at home)
I recommend covering your camera, getting a key scrambler, and using a two way firewall (I use private firewall). It won't stop them spying, but it will make you a harder target to spy on.

All of that silliness aside, most users, by a staggeringly large margin, don't know any given OS all that well. These kinds of security and privacy issues easily will have pervasive effects across the Windows userbase.

I still see no reason to "upgrade", sorry MicroSquish. "It's not quite as putrid as the last version, honest," isn't really convincing.

I think part of what I read was MS owned whatever was on your computer.
Try turning off the "phone home" software included. You have to do a reg edit to get rid of some but you are unable to turn it all off.

When you acquire, install and use the Program software and services, Microsoft collects information about your use of the software and services as well as about the devices and networks on which they operate. Examples of data we may collect include your name, email address, preferences and interests; location, browsing, search and file history; phone call and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; voice, text and writing input; and application usage. For example, when you:

install or use Program software and services, we may collect information about your device and applications and use it for purposes such as determining or improving compatibility (e.g., to help devices and apps work together),

when you use voice input features like speech-to-text, we may collect voice information and use it for purposes such as improving speech processing (e.g., to help the service better translate speech into text),

when you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes to use it for purposes such as improving performance (e.g., to help retrieve documents more quickly), or

when you input text, handwrite notes, or ink comments, we may collect samples of your input to improve these input features, (e.g., to help improve the accuracy of autocomplete and spellcheck).

Just to "help you" mind not spy on you
You have noy given any reason not to use it on a business machine.

I like breaking whatever just to reverse engineer the problem.

Look, I have 13 machines running in my house and W10 is on 2 machines. Everything is backed up daily, if it crashes the machines so the hell what, ill just reformat the whole thing.

Ive done over 60 installs of which only 20 were the free upgrade, the rest purchased.

Ive been doing this since 1992, I dont give a damn about spying etc etc...ill put my laptop in the bathromm and let them watch my protein enriched turd fall out of my arse.

You do not learn how to counter coverts by avoiding them.

Keep running. Itll get you no where soon.

And this isnt really directed at you but in general.
Hmm and what if they video you having fun with Palm and her five freinds whilst browsing porn and threatened to spread it on the internet or send it to your employer or friends - or put it onto the company you work for intranet - or even worse hackers managed to see your wife or your baby and engineered a paedophile kidnapping - there are just so many permutations and so many devious criminals out there its not wise to broadstroke with the old metaphorical IT paintbrush.

    Trust No-1.
My man, I, before my run in with the law, did hacking. Its nothing to me. I am a cissp and a msca, I know all the risks and frankly dont care. As I said, you do not learn to defeat and enemy by retreating.

Believe me, big government already knows that you and palm 5 are good friends...hide what?
lol And I have been hacking and writing machine code games , viruses etc since 1985 when the internet was merealy bulletin boards and prestel and I am also a security consultant and to hear your pontification and blatant disregard for security makes your claim of Cissp laughable.

As for being gay - fraid not - I am no ones man!

And no the government dont know anything about palm as i dont have a microphone or webcam for a start - never have.

Your naievety is astounding for someone who "claims" to be in IT - You had a brush with the law - well that just shows how good your so called hacking skills are - lol if you knew what i have done in my time you would be horrified and i have never had a brush with the law and that says it all really - probably a script kiddie - go peddle your fantasies elsewhere!

Sorry but you sound more and more naive as you type. So, the government doesn't know anything about you? Hmmm, So, you are saying that you do not use a debit card, credit card, never filled out a job application, never filled out an apartment application, never applied for a loan, never used a cellular phone, cb radio, never filed taxes, never signed up for anything in your entire life that required your SSN, name or address? Yes, the government knows nothing about you at all...lose yourself.

I never said you were gay. I said that big government knows about you and palm-5. Further, what does you doing that have to do with being gay? Heterosexual people masturbat@, homosexual people masturbat@; it's natural...what are you an animal?

Now, the fact that you think that someone, like myself, who holds an MCSA and a CISSP, is without the capacity to have disdain and complete disregard for security, laws, etc, shows that you are one naive individual or that you have just lived the past 30 years in a tight knit closet with your Tin hat and ham radio.

Please count the number of individuals that have held prominent positions and several years later they show up on the news for something criminal, unethical, horrendous, down right dastardly? Hell, we have priest molesting children, presidents lying about weapons of mass destruction, doctors with 25 years of experience writing prescriptions for friends that are not medically needed

How many lawyers get arrested for taking bribes?

How many security consultants give false information to firms just to garner a larger and/or more lucrative contract? How many times does a security breach happen and someone gets to go from hero to goat? There are a ton of people that have gone from HERO TO GOAT.So please sit at your keyboard and type "that never happens".

Please tell me that you can prove with 100% authenticity that I do not own a CISSP certification and a MCSA certification? Can you account for it? Are you even authorized to guess?

I started doing this in 1992, you started in 85'. Okay? So that means that you are probably a few years older than me, or you may be well over the hill by now...what else?

True, I will not disagree with that but I have used it since day one. I have one paid and one free and I have yet to have any issue. I have done multiple installs and none have had any issues yet. I have 11 machines in my house that have W7. It's great but I need to break down W10 and study it, so I use it. My clients asked for it, some didn't. That is why I have had experience working with it. I like it. I will not (currently) put it on all of my machines because of possible issues with drivers and such but eventually, it will be on 50% of my machines.

I just cannot see Microsoft, purposely, disclosing that Mark in San Jose was caught palm-5ing himself at 5:30 am on xyz.website.

Perhaps someone, rouge, could go on a covert operation and "breach" and put someone's personal info out there. I would doubt that because the repercussions would be to high. But, we have seen people go from Hero to Goat before, so you are not far out in left field.

Blinds are for respect of people walking by. The neighbors' wives do not need to see my penillllle at 8AM while they are jogging. Women probably wouldn't mind it but Im married and they are also, so no need in causing a ruckus. It has nothing to do with privacy. It is just common courtesy.

Another thing, I have pretty expensive electronics in my house and by having windows wide open is just inviting people to break into your house. I do have an alarm system, camera system and windows all armed but someone can still break in while the family is home. I have no problem with them KNOWING I have it. But, I, honestly, do not want to be back in court and especially not in court for blowing some scumbag away just because he broke into my house for a t.v. or laptop. I live in a state where self defense isn't exactly a reason to put a .40cal slug into someone's chest.

Bank account info? If you need money for something, just ask I don't mind giving it for a good reason.

I learned a lot of things during my trails with hacking and stealing and I realized that it is pretty lame to hurt other people because of pure entertainment purposes.

There simply is no such thing as complete security. This truism, however, is no excuse for not having proper security. Personally, I prefer that my OS doesn't go out of its way to leak data to the outside world; would anyone care to argue otherwise..?

Just because the intended recipient of the surreptitiously-gathered data about you does not have ulterior motives - debatable, at best! - does not mean another party won't gain access to that data; there are a disturbingly large number of examples "in the wild" of exactly this. The same goes for backdoors and other control/access routes. The Sony backdoor, for example, was (and still is) quite heavily exploited by many, many additional folks.

Comparing throbbing e-peen is making both of you look silly.

In all seriousness here, neither of us are being serious.

I know that having your personal information out there, whether someone accidentally exploits it, purposely does it, or just views it and does nothing is not necessarily welcomed. My point was is how will we learn how to "fix" certain software/OS's if we do not study them. Running from them doesn't help in any way what so ever.

We learn how to reverse-engineer by using and studying, not by avoiding.

As far as the epeen goes, neither of us are comparing. I was merely saying that being married and heterosexual or homosexual has nothing to do with self pleasure. Humans do it; it's natural.

I'll politely remove myself from responding further concerning anything except facts to why or why not someone should use W10.

First off, no one should HAVE to fix or reverse-engineer their OS, especially for basic security from intrusion. At least, not until M$ starts paying us to do so.

Using an OS just so you can fix it is profoundly silly, unless you are trying to improve your programming and/or UI design skills. For the vast majority of users, what's broken stays broken.

As for e-peen, yes, both of you are pissing on each other's boots, so can it, if you would be so kind. No one cares, nor should they, about what certificate(s) or degree(s) anyone claims to have.

I understand but I want to learn about it. As I said, we do not learn by avoiding. When I said we, I am speaking in terms of people who are interested in the subject matter of reverse engineering, hacking, etc.

If someone isnt interested in trying to tear it apart and learn about it then of course they wouldnt give the excuse for using it. Others have other reasons. To call people idiots for using it doesnt make sense. To degrade someone due to them doing something which is of no business to you doesnt make sense at all unless it hurts other people.

I called no one here an idiot. And while I have cast minor aspersions on certain boot-piddling behaviors, I have insulted no one for using Windows 10 (or any other OS) =) .

You are overgeneralizing YOUR use-case to people at large. The argument remains: These kinds of vulnerabilities are inexcusable in an OS, especially since they were put there intentionally by the developer.

I agree. To have all this stuff turned on by default is just wrong on so many levels.
To have the excuse that it is free and on to help you makes no difference.
Microsoft should not make people go to 13 different pages to turn it off, (what you can turn off anyway)
There should be one big button, clear to see, not dimmed out as some are, where users can opt out of it all.
We are talking about an operating system here not peoples private parts or habits.
