Yahoo confirms the largest hack in history
As we yesterday reported, inside information had it that Yahoo's alleged hack was real and that the company was only waiting to come forward and confirm it. Now, a day later, the internet giant has indeed confirmed what seems to be the largest hack of this type in the history of the internet.

According to Yahoo the hack that happened in late 2014 managed to collect information from its user accounts. The hacker, which the company believes to be a "state-sponsored actor", stole information from over 500 million users.

Thus far the largest hack has been attributed to MySpace, which affected around 427 million accounts. Yesterday as the numbers were still unclear suggestions of 200 million or hundreds of millions were circulating.

According to Yahoo among the leaked information are:
  • Names
  • Email addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt)
  • In some cases encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers

As always with these hacks, you should change your Yahoo password if it has been the same since late 2014. Also change the password on other services that have the same password.

Yahoo has said that it's working with law enforcement to get to the bottom of the hack and will inform the affected users.

I'm still just stunned that Yahoo has (or had) 500,000,000 users. Actually, I'm amazed that Yahoo even exists anymore.

I cannot believe that if this happened in 2014 that they (YAHOO ) just got around to telling its users to change their password about 3 weeks ago. As everyone said by now the hackers are long gone and will NEVER BE caught and all Yahoo users will be getting so much porn and spam emails and crap like that. I will probably have to dump them. WTF... HAS THIS WORLD COME TO ? 2014 its now almost 2017 those IDIOTS ! and lets not forget didnt Google buy out Yahoo ? if they did some blame should go towards them too. besides reporting everything you do online while using google to the NSA . they just give out your email to anyone with money.

It does seem a bit late. Should have made it known to people when it happened or at least that they were sure.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if 200 million of these are duplicates.

I know I've created at least 10........largely in part due to AD banning me for relentlessly unleashing on commentors over and over again. I've been nice since then. :)

I am not really a newbie here... I just dont say much and for all this time Ive been reading and not typing. But Ive been in after dawn since 2001 and am just P.O. that this happened with Yahoo.

the articles I get from this ( site )link are fascinating. I loved the 1 about Mars since my kid works for NASA. we are going there and sooner than you think. but a spaceship with 100 people on board ?? wow... that guy sure must have the $ and gonna have ALOT of rocket fuel !

anyways...its a dam shame when you are the last to be told your getting screwed. but thats the way it is now.
