Meta states in its blog that the so-called Web Calling feature enables both one-on-one and group audio and video calls directly in WhatsApp on the browser. The familiar Calls tab will also be brought to the browser version, where users can see their call history and favorites, just like in the mobile and desktop applications. Functions already available in calls, such as screen sharing and reactions, will also be available in the browser. According to the company, all calls remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits or additional charges.
Another interesting update is that calls can now be transferred from one device to another without disconnecting the call. A user can start a call, for example, on a phone or tablet while on the go and later transfer it to a computer's WhatsApp browser version or desktop application without needing to end the connection. The same works in reverse: a call started on a computer can be continued on a phone if the user needs to leave. This matches the multi-device experience offered by many other communication services and makes WhatsApp calls more flexible in everyday situations.
Group call management is also improved with a new waiting room feature, which resembles lobby solutions familiar from video conferencing services. When a user creates a call link and enables a setting that requires approval to join, participants are first directed to a waiting room. The call organizer can then decide who gets to join and when. This increases security and control, especially in situations where the link has been shared with a wider audience or where the call is used for work or association activities.
On the technical side, WhatsApp is also bringing two new improvements to calls: background noise suppression and so-called QuickHD video. Background noise suppression aims to filter out ambient noise so that the speaker's voice is heard more clearly even in noisy or busy environments. The feature can be controlled directly from in-call settings, so its use does not require deeper setting adjustments. Similar solutions have been implemented in many other video conferencing services in recent years, and they have been found to improve call quality, especially in open-plan offices and public spaces.
QuickHD, in turn, aims to improve the video call initiation experience. According to WhatsApp, high-definition quality is now aimed to be provided within the first few seconds of a call, whereas previously, video sharpening might have taken a moment as the connection stabilized. However, the practical effect depends on the user's network connection quality, and it is not yet clear how the feature works with weaker connections or if it can be turned off if desired. Meta has also not specified whether QuickHD dynamically adapts to network load.
