Rear Channel

An audio Channel in a Surround Sound system that's intended to be positioned behind the listener is considered a Rear Channel. Although modern Surround Sound formats use multiple Rear Channels, as did the early Quadraphonic Sound surround systems of the 1960s and 1970s, some formats like Dolby Surround and Dolby Pro Logic utilize only a single Rear Channel.
