WMV HD is a marketing name for video content that is encoded using Microsoft's Windows Media Video 9 codec. Content can be found in resolutions up to 720p and 1080p. WMV HD content is intended to be played back on PC equipment and was never made for stand-alone use. It is not a stand-alone codec or a specific modulation of WMV9 and currently all existing WMV HD content is encoded using the VC-1 complaint WMV9 codec (VC-1 Main Profile)
Several WMV HD titles were distributed on DVD-ROM discs, often as supplements to DVD-Video releases. The content is protected using Microsoft's Windows Media DRM technology. WMV HD was considered a stepping stone to more robust solutions to the consumer HD market, such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
