Before you start configuring VideoReDo Plus you should consider what you're going to be using it for. It's a frame accurate MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 editor, meaning it can do a small amount of re-encoding if you decide to make a cut somewhere other than an I frame. Besides general MPEG editing, VideoReDo Plus supports several formats that are specific to particular DVR and playback equipment and software, both for input and output.
DVR MPEGs
Probably the most common use for VideoReDo Plus is removing commercials from DVR recordings. Besides supporting some specialized files like the ones you get from a Tivo or Windows Media Center Edition PC, it also has a tool for detecting commercials. Additionally, you can mask part of each frame while editing if you need to remove commercials before viewing.
Customizable Interface
You can setup VideoReDo Plus so you either select sections of the file to keep or to remove. You can save your edits as projects that can be loaded interactively later or added to a batch job. Even the navigation buttons can be customized to move forward or backward in the file at nearly any rate you could want.
There are also other uses for a frame accurate MPEG editor. I personally use it to "stitch together" MPEG files encoded from my DV captures. Depending on how much time I want to spend setting up MPEG encoding jobs, I've also cut up an entire tape's worth of video to create I frames for chapter points on a DVD. Whatever you use it for, you'll get more use out of it, or at least put less work into it, if you customize it to suit your needs and personal preferences.
