I suppose that depends on which filesystem you use to view the size.
DVD5 = 4.7 Gig. Calling the format "DVD4POINT7" is stupid, hence why its called DVD5 and people often call them 5 Gig discs.

I'm sorry for being so ignorant....I mean I'VE never called them DVD4POINT7 or DVD5 because they are neither. They're about 4300MB's and in the USA thats 4.3 gigs not 4.7
Sorry but I was taught in school that 300 rounds down not up. I've always personally called them "blank dvd disks".

extract a DVD5 image to your hard drive, then right click, then goto properties. It should show something along the lines of:
Size: 4.44 GB (4,773,695,488 bytes). Really, I was trying to enlighten you, wether you think I know something or not, I couldn't care less.

You just stated 4.44GB's so how is that 5GB's? To begin with the available size on a blank DVD is 4.34GB's (not 4.44) which is 4,660,039,516 bytes. As I was taught in gradeschool the minimum a number has to have at least .5 to round up (1.5 can be rounded too 2). (.34 isn't close to .5)
If a blank DVD states it has 4.7GB's of space, obviously that is a misnomor. OBVIOUSLY because as you just stated 4,773,695,488 bytes=4.44GB's if a blank DVD HAD 5GB's of available space that would be 5,368,709,120 bytes
So let's rehash the lesson kiddies-
5,368,709,120 bytes=5GB's
4,660,039,516 bytes=4.34GB's
that's a difference of 708,669,604 bytes or 675.84MB's
THEREFORE A BLANK DVD IS NOT 5GB'S IN SIZE.
AND I DO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

ur right about your comment considering charging levys on cd's and books. This whole system is nothing but a very stupid joke. I'm (and a lot of others) very fond of music so i often buy cd's and dvd's. But before buying them i like to download a couple of tracks to see if the cd is ok. So right now i'm paying twice! And i'm not into sharing stuff or whatever.
Same with dvd's... + in my country almost every company has to pay a copy-tax per copied page which is also just another tax. @ my office f.i. we pay for getting all our books plus other information so all copies are just for internal use. Why paying for that? Didn't we already do that?
Sounds like a hidden irs-tax to me... but i guess that's becoming a prob all around the world.
I don't mind giving money to artists but if i've already paid them they shouldn't charge me twice.

but i've heard that the dutch magazine i read plus some major manufacturers of blanc cd and dvd's is about to take legal steps against the dutch office that is charging these taxes. Hopefully it will cause a worldwide reaction....
