Swedish Parliament approves anti-piracy law

Swedish Parliament approves anti-piracy law
On 1st July it will no longer be legal to download copyrighted material from the Internet in Sweden. It has always been illegal to distribute copyrighted material on the Internet without permission however. The new law also aims to deter people from making copies of CDs and DVDs by charging a blank media levy. The price of a five gigabyte DVD is expected to rise from 10 kronor to 30 kronor. Members of the parliament argued that musicians and film-makers for example, have the right to receive proper payment for their work.

The law also makes it illegal to copy an entire book. "Every worker should be entitled to a reasonable salary," Left Party member of parliament Tasso Stafilidis said. One huge Swedish torrent site, The Pirate Bay, has already a message on the main page of the site saying "By the way, we will NOT shut down the 1st of July." It is still legal to make backup copies of your CDs and DVDs however for your own personal use.

"The price of a five gigabyte DVD is expected to rise from 10 kronor to 30 kronor."

Since when did 5GB blank DVD's become available an why did I never hear about them?

I suppose that depends on which filesystem you use to view the size.

DVD5 = 4.7 Gig. Calling the format "DVD4POINT7" is stupid, hence why its called DVD5 and people often call them 5 Gig discs.

You had never heard of this because your obviously an ignorant **** who has nothing better to do with his/her time.

As for the actual article, I hope TPB doesn't go down, but then again, I can't imagine it staying up for ever!

    Why post retarded comments!

Quote:The price of a five gigabyte DVD is expected to rise from 10 kronor to 30 kronor. Members of the parliament argued that musicians and film-makers for example, have the right to receive proper payment for their work.So anyone who uses blank media has to pay the levy, because they must all be making illegal copies. Swedish Parliament seems to think there is no other use for blank media.....WTF?

In this scenario, your paying em whether you rip it or not.....may as well rip it.

    but....

Average Joe: "your charging me a levy and forwarding monies to the studios / artists"

    Tossers: "Yes"

Average Joe: "So if Im paying for it, it must be ok to obtain 'backups' from the net right"

    Tossers: "No"

Average Joe: "So WTF are you charging me for then?"

Tossers: "musicians and film-makers have the right to receive proper payment for their work."

Average Joe: "The work you dont want me to download?"

    Tossers: "...er....(nervous shuffle)....Yes"

Average Joe: "Have you completley lost the plot?"

Tossers: "....er.....erm.....thats the law now so tough"

Average Joe: "So I pay you a levy for something I cant legally have, and should I try to obtain the products I'm indirectly paying for you'll fine me again, and perhaps even jail me"

Tossers: "Oh f**k, we've been rumbled"

These f***ing people baffle me!! where is the common sense?

I'm sorry for being so ignorant....I mean I'VE never called them DVD4POINT7 or DVD5 because they are neither. They're about 4300MB's and in the USA thats 4.3 gigs not 4.7
Sorry but I was taught in school that 300 rounds down not up. I've always personally called them "blank dvd disks".
    Ass.

ass=myndphuk, not the others, btw. When myndphuk can show me when he put 4700MB's on a 4300MB blank dvd disc I'll shut the F up.

damn this system needs an edit button for each post.........nah I'm not missing the point, it's just that the story is old and boring now and I've nothing better to do than reply to whatever anyone else writes specifically to me because apparently sarcasm isn't an accepted form of humor on these boards.

extract a DVD5 image to your hard drive, then right click, then goto properties. It should show something along the lines of:

Size: 4.44 GB (4,773,695,488 bytes). Really, I was trying to enlighten you, wether you think I know something or not, I couldn't care less.

    3.6.2005 20:13 #11

  • brent1a

You just stated 4.44GB's so how is that 5GB's? To begin with the available size on a blank DVD is 4.34GB's (not 4.44) which is 4,660,039,516 bytes. As I was taught in gradeschool the minimum a number has to have at least .5 to round up (1.5 can be rounded too 2). (.34 isn't close to .5)
If a blank DVD states it has 4.7GB's of space, obviously that is a misnomor. OBVIOUSLY because as you just stated 4,773,695,488 bytes=4.44GB's if a blank DVD HAD 5GB's of available space that would be 5,368,709,120 bytes

So let's rehash the lesson kiddies-
    5,368,709,120 bytes=5GB's
    4,660,039,516 bytes=4.34GB's
    that's a difference of 708,669,604 bytes or 675.84MB's

THEREFORE A BLANK DVD IS NOT 5GB'S IN SIZE.

AND I DO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

    to Mr_Taz_UK

ur right about your comment considering charging levys on cd's and books. This whole system is nothing but a very stupid joke. I'm (and a lot of others) very fond of music so i often buy cd's and dvd's. But before buying them i like to download a couple of tracks to see if the cd is ok. So right now i'm paying twice! And i'm not into sharing stuff or whatever.
Same with dvd's... + in my country almost every company has to pay a copy-tax per copied page which is also just another tax. @ my office f.i. we pay for getting all our books plus other information so all copies are just for internal use. Why paying for that? Didn't we already do that?
Sounds like a hidden irs-tax to me... but i guess that's becoming a prob all around the world.

I don't mind giving money to artists but if i've already paid them they shouldn't charge me twice.

  • juniorken

but i've heard that the dutch magazine i read plus some major manufacturers of blanc cd and dvd's is about to take legal steps against the dutch office that is charging these taxes. Hopefully it will cause a worldwide reaction....
