Sony claims Wii is just an 'impulse buy'

It seems that Sony Corp. and Nintendo are really bringing the console war to life with words being exchanged about each others consoles and sales performance. Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesperson Dave Karraker said that 100,000 PS3 units are reaching North America each week and are selling out, but admitted that demand for the console has fallen since the holidays.

When he compared the PS3 to the Wii, he claimed the PS3 is so powerful in comparison, that it shouldn't even be in the same category. "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else," he said. While the Wii shortage continues, there are still reports of PS3s being readily available for purchase in many areas of the U.S.

In response to this, Sony has claimed that there only appears to be excessive demand for the Wii because Nintendo is shipping less stock. "That's absolutely inaccurate," Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing, Perrin Kaplan said, going further to say the company is shipping at least the same amount of units as Sony.

The New York Times also quotes company officials as saying that 1 million Wii units are shipped worldwide per month, with over half of those going to North America.

the wii will bomb in popularity in time. i give it 2 years success, with its sales and demand deminishing over the following 2 years. by that point it time the wii will be twice as infirior as it is now, and the competators will have lower prices for better looks while having the same fun.

anubis66 sales numbers are what tell the 3rd party software developers what to make games for. you may not like the ds but the ds has more games, has a better control scheme and is alot less. i took my pos psp and returned it. my house now has 3 ds and my xbox and ps2 do a better job than the craptastic psp that i had to play old roms.

Jesus Sony this is a bad sign of looking for beef from other companies. They should conserve money by making less systems cause if there not selling its because its has no interests in its community they can put ads everywhere to try to get people to buy it, but people are not gonna get a system without it having something else to interest them, not its capabilities of doing this and that and so many features but the fun factor of the systems games they can rush the best developers to make there games and make money of course but the best option is to get many developers to create new franchises and set new boundaries for the company.

*Sony was known for there games not there system performance.*

Graphics are great but yeah Nvidia is going to say Nintendo is wrong for not supporting better graphics because Nintendo uses ATI. And as we all know there's that war with ATI and Nvidia and they hate eachother kinda like Intel and AMD does. ATi is good there known for quality Nvidia is known for there SLi. But to be honest gameplay has nothing to do with graphics, I dont need to see a leaf move back and forth. And gameplay is playing mario and its a 2D game that still owns till this day thats an example. Games are what make the system thrive not graphics and moving leaves.

this is actually something i had similar feelings about. a few weeks ago i posted the wii being something of a Fad right now, where people really don't know why, but you feel as if you have to have one. its current price and the inclusion of wiisports isn't too much of a deterrent either.

they can be great fun at parties or just with your friends but how often do people really sit home alone and game? the wii isn't something that is fun and exciting all by yourself, atleast if your about 16 or older IMO. the games are pretty lackluster for the older crowd except probably zelda or sports. maybe if they had a beer pong game or something it might be intersting, but in all honesty nothing really beats the real thing. if i want to go bowling with friends we'll go and do the moonlight deal and i don't have to drop $250 to do it. it also gets us out up and out of the house for a bit which is always nice.

it is good to see people do some things that they would probably never try, say like playing tennis, boxing or just laughing at one another while they play the games. the system can really be fun but how long before having get togethers or playing at parties seems a bit redundant or even boring for people? game appeal only lasts so long and like so many point out the track record of companies, and being that this is nintendo were talking about, their record is not something that favors older gamers like myself.

the one thing that does puzzle me more than anything is why companies, fanboys, or just people in general seem to always want to compare the wii to the ps3. how can you really compare game systems with TOTALLY DIFFERENT TARGET MARKETS not to mention their designed purposes??? i mean do you think mercedes gives a crap about the ford focus??? probably not.

Actually, according to my own personal math, the PS3 is doing better then stated by the Spokesperson (WOW!).

My figure was done assuming 100,000/week sold since its release date.

The PS3 launched 17 November 2006. I figured the PS3 has been out for 11 weeks today, 2 February 2007.

If all 100,000 PS3's are sold that ship each week to America that would mean that the PS3 is not selling almost at all anywhere else in the world.

The current figures (8:03 am GMT) at NexGen wars says the PS3 has sold:
1,339,997 units worldwide if 1.1 million of those are in America then that means only ~240,000 have been sold in every other country in the world combined.

Why then, are Wii's constantly selling out within a day at maximum, at every store around my town? Is the Wii a "impulse" buy? According to facts I have seen its not. If it truly is a fad then by Christmas 2007 so many Wii's will be on shelves in-store that Nintendo won't ship anymore until summer '08, if at all.

Well, being a post avid-gamer, I can say that if a game is fun, has great replay-value, and has a great ability to adapt to the times, then it's worth getting. Most new games I've seen lack mainly that "fun factor" that should be the main focus of games. If I were to compare a game like Halo 2 to Halo 1, I would go for Halo 1 in a heartbeat. Why? Because it has that "fun factor" more than the second one did. It's also the same thing with me when comparing Gran Turismo 3 with 4. I'd play 3 over 4 any day, because I just like it that much better. Who cares if the background is animated?

That's the issue with comparing the PS3 with the Wii. It seems that, even though most people like fun games, they go for the game with the better graphics. But that's not entirely the case for the Wii. People who buy the Wii aren't buying it because it's the best console ever, they're buying it because it's fun and easy to use, which would be one of the reasons I would buy it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not entirely old, I'm only 20! :D But still, I would still prefer Halo 1 over a game like Gears of War, and that's how most of these Wii buyers think too.

the ps3's are ften seen cuz they com in random days here and there, and never on 1 day only. they ship in constantly, and i bet the reason the sase is full is cuz they send 40, and when of the the 6 case units gets sold, its spot gets filled again. this is just rediculous that nintendo fanboys say wii is better on pure sales and that the ps3 blows cuz it doesnt sell much. the ps3 destroys wii. i bet the ps3 could emulate wii if homebrew is found.

sales are nothing to base a products worthyness. i baught a ps3 that loses sony money, and makes me feel better that they are takign a loss for me. if i baught a wii, it be throwing nintendo $100 to use it because its so cheap and inferior. the psp i own i only do my wonderful homebrew on and i listen to music, well worth what i put into it. the psp is a better buy thatn the wii, especially with hte 3.03 downgrader and all in-store shiped psp's having htat firmware or lower.

IMHO, the reason people call the wii innovative is because the entire system is based around the wiimote and every game that comes out uses it's motion detecting capabilities. 5 years ago, if someone wrote an article or comment on where games would be at today, most would say better graphics, better ai, I doubt many would've said console based around a motion sensing controller. The wii went in a completely different direction than everyone though games were going, it was a huge gamble on their part, and for the most part it looks like it's working.

Also, I had the powerglove when I was a kid and it was horrible, the motion sensing didn't work properly with any games, probably because most games were 2d, and since it used one arm to put the glove on, you only had one hand to use the controller.

Sony is just jealous because the PlayStation 3 is sitting at the bottom of the console sales list and Nintendo sells out every single Wii shipment the stores receive. Sony wants to be number 1, especially with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2's successes, and having a console that's overpriced doesn't help them. Plus, the console now has problems due to the new firmware update. Sony, get your act together. By the way, nVidia saying that graphics are better, to me, doesn't make a good game. Most games that have beautiful graphics have really bad gameplay(I take the MotorStorm demo as an example), so I support Nintendo's decision. And to think I have always liked Sony and Nintendo products, now my support for Sony has drifted over to Microsoft and the Xbox 360.

I think the only thing that makes the Wii better is the controller,and that is about it.I admit Zelda Twilight Princess is a good game,but I wouldn't buy the Wii for one game.I have the GameCube and I only play a couple games for it,cause most of the games they have just don't interest me.I play the PS2 and Xbox more than anything,because of the game selection.The PS3 definately has better graphics than the Wii by comparison,and to be honest I think it won't be that long until we see some real good games such as God of War 2 and Final Fantasy XIII.Another thing for everyone who is saying the Xbox 360 has better graphics than the PS3 at the moment I would have to agree.I think everyone is missing the point though,the PS3 hasn't been out as long as the Xbox 360 and still isn't utilizing the full power of the system.I read an article awhile back that mentioned the games are only running 20% of the systems power,and after reading that I was suprised.I'm not a die hard fan of any of the new consoles or the companies that make them.If you want to talk about the consoles game selection,I will compare the PS3 or XBox 360 game selection to the Wii's current selection and in my opinion they have the Wii beat.The Nintendo DS has outsold the PSP systems and to be honest they should.The Nintendo DS has been out longer than the PSP systems,so of course they have outsold more units than Sony's PSP.The thing is I really don't care what system outsells each other or what beef the companies have against each other.I only care about the games that come out for the console,and that is my main priority when I buy a game system.The other point I wanted to make was some people like to have all three consoles.They buy the reasonable priced console,then wait for the prices to drop on the other consoles.The Wii is the cheapest at the moment,considering the Xbox 360 will need the HD-DVD add on.If you don't want to spend alot of money then get the Wii system,but there is no way in hell you can compare the Wii to the other consoles.Yeah the PS3 and Xbox 360 cost more,but everyone should keep in mind they are using the newest media advancements.I would like to say for those poeple that are fans of the Nintendo's Wii system show me where you can buy a new game system and a Blu-ray player cheaper or a new game system with a HD-DVD player.I seriously doubt that you can show me a cheaper solution.My final thoughts are I really don't care about console debates,and ever since I been here at afterdawn looking at these forums there has been numerous console debates.I really do think they should be closed,cause we all know what the outcome will be.

I agree with you BobbyBlu but look at it this way so you can understand what I mean. When PS2 was out with Xbox and Gamecube, PS2 is a less superior towards game engine performance and of course Gcube and Xbox had better graphics.

But listen very well why did Sony still sell and had major numbers of units per household?
It was because of the games, not the graphics, not the visuals but the creativity and core gameplay used in games such as Grand Theft Auto 3, ever since that game came out other developers used its core gameplay on other name titles which you guys already know a ton of games that use it running around stealing cars and breaking crime(True Crime etc.).

Now Sony and Xbox fight over the GTA series for the next release cause of course if this made my product sell why not pay rockstar an extra load of money to make the system sell. If the game sells it'll make the console sell.

To be exact,
"Without games there is no future for the system."

Now with the graphics, yes its important but not now. Make a system right away and tell me if you can create a game using 100% of its power, games at launch never use its full potential maybe in a year or so but not right away. Also games graphics can be rendered on lower graphics cards but not at the same fps as the monster one's. So graphics wise you win with overall performance.

I remember back in the days when graphics did not matter and playing mario or sonic was just as fun with its new gameplay.

I work at a best buy repairing products, yes geek squad, and to be honest, we have about 25 PS3's in our warehouse and 4 on display. We have had them for 3 weeks now and nobody cares. Worst yet, is that half of what we've sold comes back with a hardware issue whether it's overheating or just plain not working.

I got a nintendo wii cuz it was cheaper and, well, just more interesting. People who buy the Wii are not looking for cutting edge grapgics, they are looking for something different and well, cheaper.

I loved the PS2, but the PS3 has not done anything yet in my eyes to make it worth 600 bucks, yea it has a blue-ray player, but how many people have an HDTV? There are many, but not enough, to put a PS3 or watch a blue-ray disc on a SDTV just dosen't make sense.

If we are talking about hardware issues,then lets talk about the Wii messing up Television sets.It was on the news,and it was reported to have recalls on some.The Xbox 360 had drive issues,when you turned it on its side it didn't have anything to hold the game disc so it would scratch up the discs.I think the Xbox 360 issue is sorted out,but not sure about some of the Nintendo Wii systems.The PS3 was reported to have freezing issues,but with firmware upgrades they can fix it.You have 25 PS3 units cause most people can't afford it including myself,but that doesn't mean people aren't interested in it.It tells me not alot of people can go spend 600 dollars on a game system.HDTV sets are dropping in price,it won't be that long until they are more affordable.Game systems having hardware issues is not something new though,every game system has issues.I think your mind is set on the present when you should be looking further into the future.Sony and Microsoft took that into consideration when they made their consoles.Nintendo is just living in the past besides their controller which I do give them props.They spent more time making the controller for the system,then actually spending some time to make some decent games.The graphics don't always make the game,but they do make it look better.The gameplay has always been a factor,and if you liked the PS2 system then why not the PS3 system.I can tell the Wii is just gonna end up like their GameCube system.The game selection for the Nintendo Wii just doesn't excite me.

the Ps3s main asset and fault is the BR player with the BR player it has longevity and sony states it wants to run this console for 10ish years,however making a 600$ console in a 300-400 console age...sony has a long road ahead of it...

I have 3 girls.We have the original xbox,had to get the 360 for Halo games.We have the Nintendo game cube.We got lucky and found a wii.We also have a psp portable.Not to mention 2 nintendo game advance.
We all love the wii.It is affordable.The graphics are pretty good and the new Zelda game,well my kids fight over who is next to play it.I like the wii cause it has more kids games and it is fun even for me.
We will probably always have a xbox.To be honest we love the 360,but a little disappointed that it doesn't play all the old games.We could only get a hand full to play in the 360.
I don't know why people have to put down Nintendo system.The systems have always been affordable.We are very pleased with the Wii and i am glad we picked it up.
Just to let you all know the Wii was not an impulse buy.We have had many of my kids friends over to play the Wii and so far so good.
Just my 2 thoughts for today.

me I am a gamer I will take any game however I refuse to put up with poor gameplay design and will rant throughly on any game that skims on gameplay because the devs finaly made money (Square,EA,Edios,) or make elists non configable games (Bungie and 80% of console fps devs).

Sony has bitten off more than it can chew,MS is still deving the 360 and the WII is meek but awe inspiring,I just hope nintendo realizes that games can be better and dose soemthign about gameplay if not......*sigh*

Thats what nintendo is trying to dispel, that at the end of the day (or the start for that matter) it don't mean shit. You either get it or you don't. I never bashed the Wii but it can't be compared to PS3.Far as the Wii being innovative yes it is but this isn't something people havn't seen before from Nintendo hint= NES power glove & power pad i wasn't making fun of it.But i can't figure out why people think the Wii is the greatess thing since a slice of bread.Plus the whole system is center around a controller how many thing they can do with the controller in 3 or 4 year before it get old.Plus the Wii could have been cheaper in stores because i didn't cost Nintendo much to make it.300 dollars for a system that the parts are very cheap on the market right now.DVD rom drive is dirt cheap.Just think about it where didn't Nintendo get there price point from.300 dollars for a system that weaker than a PS2 & XBOX.I'm sorry but i will pass on this system til the price come down on it.I've never been a console basher but sometime people are so blind by there hate for a company that they never take a look at there product to see if its even good.

Dont forget the GC was already more powerful than the PS2,but you have a point,if Nintendo dose not revitalize gameplay and game control not just port "normal" games to the Wii is controller nintendo is more or less screwed they have about 3-5 years its is a simi normal life span for a 2nd tear console,the 360 seems to be stable enough to last 5 years and if MS pulls the model upgrade idea like I think they are this will give them a longer life span perhaps not like the PS3s as sony has stated they want a solid 10 year run.

The wii is a solid system but still has the trappings of todays games and this annoys me to no end and I cant tell if it will get better,the 360 and PS3 are what they are media centers with gaming attached and for the most part are treated like it,meaning to say no worse than the graphic worshiping last 5 years *L*

What I want to see is a movement back to gameplay,petty looks in gaming is getting old.

i agree with ZIppyDSM. We need a movement back toward gaming just for the fun of it. It wasn't the PS1 but the Xbox that got everyone excited about big freaking multimedia center type gaming. The Xbox crowd is a different sort of gamer. They're more slanted toward PCs, tweaking, patches & uber new stuff. The PS2 crowd is more of the traditional gamer, but there are BFMC type people there. The Nintendo crowd has always been about gaming. The GBA (yes I still have one from like 2001) is so simple to use & the SNES/N64/GameCube are all simple gaming machines. They don't pretend to have the highest end graphics.

Remember how SEGA had that blast processing ad with Sonic? That the Genesis had a faster CPU & was therefore better than Nintendo?? Well we can see who got their arse kicked and no longer makes any HW now do we? >_> ^_^

Anyway, I like games but I also mess around with multimedia, DVD & tweaks/hacks every so often. Sony is trying to fit into the Xbox scene by making an all-in-one system that does everything. They are going to have a VERY rude awakening unless they stick to making games & downloadable content. Let the gamers decide if they want to start running Linux & other stuff on the system. Make it available, but don't focus on it. Keep the PSN online store segmented into a gamers section & a multimedia section. Do not combine the two.

Nintendo is moving in the right direction, and you can darn well bet they will have a DVD add-on available someday. In the meantime, enjoy your games. Leave the homebrew/hacks & other stuff to the experts.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to finish reading this article on how to run Fedora on the PS3 so I can go buy one :)~

you make a good point. Graphics matter. so much in fact that everyone was discussing PS3 vs 360. But where you are wrong is that story matters the most. Even the nvidia article say , "sometimes the story plays second fiddle to the graphics". if the story is interesting, then having draw dropping graphics, make the game worth ever penny. I think his point was, so much time is spent on graphics, that the story gets skimped. And, well, then when that happens, the game goes from great to mediocre, or just a POS.

also, I disagree that the wii totally ignores graphics. The graphics really aren't that bad. And everyone keeps missing a point about when graphics become complex, the disc latency goes to hell. like DVD727 said, do really need to see leafs move in a game? Does that make the game really better? if you don't mind waiting 4-6 seconds for a scene to load, then good for you. I guess I'm just impatient

what is wrong with you? what could be better than having a disk hold 50 gig. I know I need them.

on a last note, the nvidia article is a bit biased. I mean, nvidea IS in the graphics business. so saying graphics are important is their job.

but I actually know the guy. its actually kinda stupid. I've used it. I think its much harder to install than the linux kit for the ps2. at least sony had some good directions for that install.

I hate to keep beating the same horse, but [talking about graphics here] I personally love cel shading, and wish there were more games that were cel shaded (like the new rogue galaxy, tales of the abyss, crimson tears, musashi) also, I have found that of all the cel shaded games, i enjoyed playing all of them and the load time, was small (5 secs or less) . so, in my opinion, we need to get load time (aka disk latency) down to a few seconds , before we improve graphics.

Have you ever heard anything so arrogant, I'd just like to inform Dave Karraker (of course he reads here lol) that my 15 year old son ASKED for this consol for christmas and it's probably the best present (his opinion) hes ever had. In our household we already have an x box, ps2 and several hand held systems that practically sit idle now, ebay here we come :)

It must irk Dave something terrible that this cheap Wii crappy consol (pun intended) can outsell his mega powerful behemoth of a entertainment system.

Now that we have had the the Wii for over a month I can tell Dave why, its a damn FUN system and doesn't come with the expensive gamble of blueray v's HD and is liked by kids and adults alike, lol have you ever seen four 40 somethings playing tennis in there lounge, I have and it really funny.

So who cares it may only last a couple of years, by that time the format war will be over and we'll just move to the next big (or Wii) thing.

Just to add-
I was planning on getting an Xbox 360 or PS3 later this year but my PC is a better games system anyway so I'll leave it a bit.

i think the wii is shipping out on price more than anything. what are users getting? fun games (if you take a year to learn the controls) and crap graphics worse than xbox 1. with the ps3 or even the 360, you get fun games, and it looks better doing it too. the wiimote is too much of a change for anyone used to different controllers. whats with cod3 for wii? and madden? effed up control schemes if i've ever used one.

your totally wrong, price wasn't the factor in me buying it was, if you read other peoples posts, choice. its your choice to be a bottom feeder, but i have higher standards. i enjoy good graphics, and the ps3 does and while delivering gameplay. plus the line up is fantastic. the wii games are largly family and child/adolescent aimed. sure a few game are enjoyable on the wii, but when i get enjoyment from a ps3 putting out much better detail and polygons then the wii doing last gens work with a new controller than i know my choice. plus there is alot more to the ps3 past its game use. i still dont see why people put the wii and ps3 in the same catagory of consoles, because they are so different.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because you're so busy going from a to z, that there's 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

but you are correct, the controller is extremely simple to use. and it only takes about 5 minutes to learn any game. i think some of the games feel more natural on the wii compared to the ps2 (dragonball z)

Despite anubises(Dave's)[joke] lack of people skills and coming over as a 'fan boy' he does make a good point in that you can't really compare the two other than they are games consoles, there is no doubt that the ps3 is superior in the hardware stakes and can only fairly be compared to the xbox360, in fact it can be argued that alot of households will eventually have either a ps3/xbox360 and also a wii because they are so different in technology and gameplay and if this is the case nintendo will indeed sell more consoles than Sony or Microsoft.

in theory it may seem as if you'd be right. the only problem is they are not targeting the SAME MARKET. mercedes yeah would care if they were the only one making cars along side ford, if and only if ford started to steal THEIR potential consumers. face it, Tiny Tim isn't in sony's target market...

so as i was pointing out, each Wii sold is not a dent in Sony's installed userbase or expected userbase. why, well because every Wii sold doesn't mean one less potential ps3 sale. if this was about the 360, sure it'd be more damaging for sony to see 360 sales surge while their own sales drop because they are both generally fighting for the same target markets. the wii can sell 50 million units in the next two years, but really what does that mean for the 360 and ps3? is it really all doom and gloom for them? this whole thing right now seems to be more of a media story than a problem for sony...

Unlike Sony, Mercedes doesn't need to sell the same amount (or anywhere close to that amount) of cars as Ford does in order to strive.

Sony needs the ps3 in as many hands as possible, because game developers develop for the systems that are in as many hands as possible.

But look at this way they are buying parts at cost putting them together and have no choice but to lower the price in order to sell them.
