Sony hints at PS3 price cut
Sony Corporation senior VP Takao Yuhara, has hinted that the company may reduce the price of the PS3 console by April next year in an effort to reduce the company's losses. Sony's gaming devision lost €343 million in the last quarter of 2006. Yurhara told the News York Times that the company hopes the division will stop making losses by 2008.

He said that "such factors, including price cuts to some extent, are factored in" to break even .When asked for further details he denied giving any specifics but did say, "We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the time is right."

He also warned that Sony's operating loss for this financial year could exceed the expected ¥200 billion.

Sony is quick to thrash Nintendo but they made an affordable console that currently outsells the PS3 3.5 to 1 and people love it. To top it off they are making a profit. Yes that is the little "p" word companies love. Hopefully Sony is making up their division losses somewhere else. Maybe their Blu-ray division will save them

any informed consumer would know or have come to realize that companies like microsoft and sony don't make their profits in the gaming market from hardware. it actually comes from the software side. im sure if sony or microsoft wanted to make available a profitable system from the word go that would be pretty comparable to the wii in terms of say graphics they'd be more than able to. wait a minute...haven't xbox and the ps2 been out for some 5+ years now...hahaha im jk. besides for the introduction of the wiimote which isn't something that is small, the wii system lacks anything that would be considered revolutionary to the business. that is in terms of say media use, graphics, processor etc...i doubt you'll be seeing an hd-dvd/blu ray addon any time soon. new technologies generally cost more in the short run. shouldn't be surprising...

I hope they cut the price..about the same time modchips hit the streets. That will be a nice incentive to buy one LOL

Wii not being revolutionary did you say? Sorry, but your wrong. How is having more RAM / faster processor / more advanced graphics card or bigger storage medium revolutionary? Its the same but better, if anything its evolutionary. Nintendo have tried something different and going a different route to the traditional controllers, and thats revolutionary enough for me. My Xbox360 and Wii will do me just nicely for now, wont be bothering with the PS3 until there are games that I'm interested in...

a price cut sounds tempting. But I don't think there are any games I really want on the PS3 right now.

its simple drop the low end production altogether and drop the high end price to 450 then we will talk.

Let's hope that price cut is a good one. Say, -$400 or so?

i'll just wait until modchips come out, i'll buy a premodded ps3 it will be a big inversion but i'll be able to have all the games i want for less than $3 each ;) ... be smart, dont give the big companies your money.

Sony needs to think clear on this. they need Blu-ray to succeed and the ps3 is thier best bet. getting it in homes at 450 would work a gaming system and br player for 450 is great. there is no way in hell i will pay 1000+ for a stand alone br player that has so many restrictions already.

Its a bit unfortunate because PS3 really is a good deal for its tech and it is capable of great things but alot of people buy consoles because they are generally affordable and much cheaper than a PC suitable for gaming. PS3 is above the price range of alot of console player and devoted PC fans most likely wont bother with a console so thats alot of the market that is alienated at PS3's current price

Sony needs to get its head out of its arse and do these now

    1.Remove head from sand

2.Drop the low end PS3 line its pointless and is losing them more money than the other.

3.They can put the 20GB HDDs into the high end and drop the high end price to 400-450,to me 60GB is a good size however right now the price bleeding is more important and they can sale official 60GB kits for 60-100,in all it dosent matter what they do to the high end as long as the price is reduced 150-200.

I agree drop the low end system it is a waiste of time. the moment i saw that low end system i thought to my self why?

as far as the cost i did see a new hp pc last week at cc for 399! it featured vista and a dual core processor which kind of makes it difficult to justify a ps3 at 600 when for 200 less i could have a new pc?

not all dual core CPUs are equal and that machine is probably running vister lite, since not all vista is equal 0-o.

I could get a X2 4400 for 130 but why bother my 3700+ is almost equal to it I can get a core duo 6600E and agp/400mhzramm mobo for 400! and then after a few months get a new mobo and 2GB 800Mhz DDR 2 for another 400 ^0^

Sony screwed up they should have offered a more modular system and never made the low end

sometimes i have to wonder what the advertising department is thinking and the people who make the decisions on what to market. i have not read too much on the success of the ps3 however i am thinking that this success may be directly related to the success of Blu-ray.
