80 GB PS3 to be released in Korea

80 GB PS3 to be released in Korea
For months we have heard rumors about larger capacity PlayStation 3s hitting shelves, but yesterday, a Sony spokesperson made it clear that an 80 GB model would be released in South Korea but that the company had no plans of releasing an 80 GB model in Europe.

The new model will be released in Korea on June 16th with a price tag of EUR $412/$550 USD.

The same spokesperson also confirmed that there was no plans to release the 20 or 60 GB models in Korea and that there were no plans for a European launch of the larger capacity units and that a North American launch hadnt been talked about. "At this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe." he added.

Those that recall, the rumors began a couple months ago when an FCC filing showed Sony asking for a Class II permissive change. The Sony spokesperson confirmed that the larger HDD was the only thing changed from past units, squashing rumors that the Bluetooth features had been updated.

interesting... i don't like the fact that it's only 80gb, not much of a upgrade, should have gone 120. But I'm intrigued by the $550 USD price tag.. supposedly the same as the 60gb but 80gb and $50 cheaper. I'm curious as to what they will do in NA, and Europe for that matter. Do i smell price drop? or you could just order a South Korean ps3, that would be cool.

probably waiting til they sell the rest of the 20GB and 60GB before they release the new one out here for that price. So that might take a while.

At this point I think it's really stupid for Sony to release another version when they can't even get their regular one to sell. You'd think they'd have the $550 price point here in the states where sells are poor and not over in Korea.

maybe they want the koreans to have a bigger HD because after they arent getting anything better.... we might get 120gb or updated bluetooth, or new sixaxis controller. whatever it is. NA and maybe EU might get something way better. and the ps3s are going to be region locked.. so good luck importing an 80 gig. also if you guys didnt know.. within 48 hours of the ps3 being released paradox managed to get a ps3 with a 720gig HD. working. so if its a matter of HD space. you can go buy a bigger HD and get the instructions. also korea don't make as much income as NA and EU. so if sony set the price high then only a few people will afford it. you cant sell something expensive everywhere. not every country is filthy rich and greedy like most. common sense people.

I seriously have no idea why Sony did this, why not just release a worldwide price drop if they can sell an 80gb for $550USD then can easily sell a 60GB one for the same if not less. Where the hell is their logic?

I personally am no fanboy of any system but I do have to deal with my kids when it comes to video games. The whole concept of having a BR player for that price is great and all but Sony dosen't have a good past record with the introduction of new media types and I personally believe that HD-DVD will end up on top.
And as far as (North)Korea is concerned dosen't their government supply the world with the best counterfit $100 USD's? Give them a little time and we will be seeing copied BR disc on the market!

No BR is going by region (are you kidding they would never pass up all that free money nothing like hiking the price to the point where importing it is still cheaper.)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes

The PS3 is not region free its crossed regioned
    Eur-Jap
    Jap-USA
    USA-jap

I have heard reports of US games working on the Eur PS3 have not confirmed it yet but this mandatory for movies, sony is not interested in making 1 device to work in pal/ntsc no they make it for each region and mark it up 30-60%.....

TO me sony would have bent the world over and enslaved it if they did the PS3 as a cheap (300-400) BR player sony would have won on so many fronts it would made up for any and all losses.

Plus to output in PAL/NTSC should be free not nickel and dime each region.

They probably took all of those 20 gig HDD from the units that they are no longer selling and slipped them inside the current units right on top of the 60 gig HDDs.
