It sucks for Blu-ray that CMC Mag will be using their format because CMC has always been known as a laser stresser.hooray for ritek because they are a great company and not many are from great from taiwan.they worked great for my ps2 backups.i dont care about the format war so i wont comment on it.

Yeah, I use Ritek all the time and they work great for me. (DVD-Rs, anyway)

until verbatim or taiyo yuden make these I'll keep clear, but ritek are reasonably, reliable with low jitter rates so it's good for HD-DVD to have low cost mas market recordable media soon to be released.
what is the big put off with Blu-ray 2x write times! omg how long does a burner have to work just to back up 20 gig, you dont want to leave the pc on over night just to back up some files, tape is faster than that ffs, if this is the future of media storage I'll choose a zip drive, as hd transfer rates suck at best.

If only they would get a move on & release the HD DVD burners.
BTW in the interests of fairness and accuracy pigfister the data transfer rate @ 1X or 2X for both HD DVD & BD is not the same as 1X or 2X on regular DVD5/9
(in the same way as DVD 'X' speeds are not the same as CD).
But yes, you're right they're not especially fast atm......but like DVD that will come in time.
Good to see more media producers tho, should have a good impact on prices

But yes, you're right they're not especially fast atm......but like DVD that will come in time.sry you are right both HD-DVD and Blu-ray are max 2x write speeds so with jitter and error correction you are looking at an eternity to fill a disc where as you can fill use usb2 zip drive within minuets and the advancement of size of storage in this medium gives it a huge advantage over the hd/blu ray recordable disc, especially in reliability as you cant scratch flash/zip/pen drives sd memory ect, so what exactly is the point of having HD-DVD and Blu-ray for backups now, it seems to me to be an obsolete format before it even gets started?

I think the price has to drop dramticaly before its gonna take right off, I mean 500gigs and a transfer rate of 300MB/s and no scratches and hot swap makes life easy. I dare say if you bought an external case for your sata then you could plug it in anywhere via usb, and more and more media center / hi-fi equipment is now coming with usb and lan/ wireless, so I could stick 500 gigs of films onto the HDD then put it in my pocket and off ah go.
