Sony threatens PlayStation 3 hackers

Sony threatens PlayStation 3 hackers
After reports surfaced that hackers had cracked the PlayStation 3's anti-piracy software, Sony America has declared that it will "aggressively pursue" anyone who is caught doing so. They have said the activity will merit legal action if caught.

"Unfortunately, hackers will try to exploit any hardware system software,"
SCEA spokesperson Dave Karraker said.

"The best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner."

According to CVG.com, hackers have cracked the PS3 firmwares 1.10 and 1.11, which allow the consoles with those firmwares to boot pirated games.

Although the games boot, so far hackers have not gotten any pirated games to actually play.

So far, despite diligent efforts, all consoles have been hacked but there are some repercussions besides legal action. Hackers run the risk of bricking their expensive consoles, as well as getting banned from the PlayStation Network.

"Naturally, any use of an exploit on the system software does void the warranty on the PS3 system... Which could be a costly mistake to see if you can run an old SEGA CD game on it,"
said Karraker.

nope, you cant play backups yet anyway, they r just beating the hackers to it ll, microsoft is still trying to catch up with thier hackers, lots of modded consoles can still go on xbox live without having to worry about getting banned and now sony has done this before its hacked and games are playable.

Whether or not they get the hackers, keep in mind that there are 6 BILLION people on this planet. SOMEONE is gonna get there sooner or later. When i asked my console retailer (who sells copied games) whether or not the PS3 had a modchip yet he actually told me, "our chief technician has to study and familiarize with the console first; then he can make a modchip"
As you can see its just a matter of time before someone makes a hack and starts making big bucks. This is gonna lead other people to making better modchips and sooner or later the Ps3 will be like the Ps2 where you can even download and play games from the net!

I'm sorry to say it to Sony since,. right now, the company (at least gaming entertainment divisions) cannot suffer any more set backs, but come on, you spent $599 on a console, you "must" have the right to use the powerful hardware under the hood the way you see it.

I'm sick of all of this license agreement nonsense and the spin that tries to set it into your head that your own bloody console is not yours to do with as you like. Personally, I hope to see PS3 opened up to homebrew, might take a little time but can you imagine the motivation to develop software for something quite powerful.

Back on point though, it's very democratically unhealthy (if you can accept that as a description) for companies like this to shape law and enforce stupid limits on consumers. Your console will be hacked... now GET OVER IT!

Thanks Dela...you should work for Sony and get it into thier heads. Talking about doing what you want with your console; i have this RICH friend who bought a Ps3, did not like it, opened it, took out all the wires and junk, and............guess what; he made a BREAD box out of it! I was so pissed cuz i wanted one myself. Again, Sony, you console is the price of a cheap PC, so i think the consumer should have the right to make the most of it.

I see news of this supposed "threat" from Sony on a lot of other ps3 scene boards, and even Usenet. The hackers might have taken their sweet time with the console in hacking it..but now that Sony in their infinite arrogance once again is issuing threats..the hacking community will be THAT MUCH MORE DETERMINED to unzip that console and everything its worth.

If only Sony had left well enough alone.

its a grey area, some US laws say this is alowed, but first youll have to break the encryption on the original disk, and "bypassing electronic security measures" is against the law. once you actualy have the copied disk, your in the clear, the only thing illegal in what you want to do is the initial action of copying the game. simply possesiong or usuing the copied game is not illegal. i have actualy gone threw american airport security with binders and binders of copied movies and they didnt say shit.

also, modding your consoul in america is not illegal, you are alowed to fuck around with anything you buy, but i woudlnt publish the information you aquire though.

if you download the game from online and the security has already been taken out your even more in the clear.

It is not that I support hacking fully.

The only two "hacks" I am approved of is:

    1.) Wallpaper changing.

Please dont get me wrong - that wallpaper of XMB looks good. It is just becoming bored wallpapers after a while. I just want to add more cheerful/bright wallpapers to XMB instead of dark, black gloomy wallpaper (I know it is due to time of day - but i can only play PS3 at nighttime since I got daytime job :( )./

2.) perhaps most important of all - stripping all those unnecessary region-protection for any online games.

I mean, I got HK PS3 right. I bought PAL version of RoF-M game as I was looking forward to play it online. But I couldn't do so because the game itself forbids me to access to European servers beausee my PS3 is not european! Cheeky of Sony - trying to impose barriers in cyberspace/internet! Internet should be free and accessible regardless of person's location/computer/PS3 around the world!

Also, this movement by Sony may infring human's right and freedom of speech. I mean, I wanted to play that game against my UK friends. Also I wanted to play against my best friends in HK and USA via Internet. I have no problem playing it online with them via MSN or any PC games. Yet Sony try to impose barrier on the internet with its PS3 network. cheeky!

I don't agree with the pirating of games. Other areas of technology that's being shared can be altered in another form to still produce quality revenue, but not games. Company X who develops games can't go to a major corporation and have them buy 1000 licenses of their latest game. You, the consumer, are the only source of revenue for the game developer and unless you want a Pepsi commercial to play just after you beat the big boss, I think we should all make an effort to never pirate games (or at least brand new games). I do think, however, copyright rules in the U.S. should be laxed across the board with some sort of sunset clause of about 10 years.

Oh i dont endorse pirating at all, I own 360 ands I have know-how to flash firmware and acquire games fast..... but instead i have chosen to buy my games for it. I guess it becomes a bit different wqhen you talk about older consoles with seriously overpriced games or games you simply "cant get" at target or gamestop anymore.

I have a modded PS2 and my biggest use for it is "SMS" to play XviD video from my HDD (sorta obsolete now that TVersity is here for my 360). I also have custom firmware for my PSP mainly because I like to check out the old PS1 games that have been gathering dust here since the 90s (great fun!).

I agree that pirating is bad and that security measures are put in place to stop it for good reason, but come on, spewing out legal threats to people who paid $599 for a console isn't such a great idea I believe personally. I don't think it should be a punishable offense to merely modify your console.

I think they all have gone off the deep end with the threats, and false promises about being hack proof. Its stupid to make get all bent out of shape. I know people who have modded their systems for all what homebrew and other nice functions you get from doing so. I also know people buy mod their system and buy the games to back them up and so forth. To Mod a system should not get them all worked up but if you used their system as a means to hack them or their servers or to due some so called terrorist act as they seem act like modding is. Lastly they should welcome it to honestly because that could potentially bring more sales to their system right now. You know how many people would brick or flat out kill their system trying to mod which could bring more sales if the homebrew, and other functions people come up with are worth it.

LOL.. SONY was so proud... "oh the ps3 will not able to be cracked.." Blah blah blah, Now they are thinking "oh sh*t" I guess we need to address "pirating and hacking but it still cant be cracked, but just in case.. but believe me it cant.. oh sh*t!!! we are cracked"
Has anyone figured out that with the increase in Technology comes the risk of hacking, pirating and cracking. Sorry, its a losing battle and the consumer isnt the one on the losing end. I do condone "piracy" and I really dont care what anyones opinion is about being against it nor do I care what you think about me. You may be the morally honest one and pay for everything but if I can get a break I WILL take it. If the "companies" do not are so worried about piracy, get out of the business. Then you dont have to worry about products being hacked, cracked or pirated.

Their being so strong fisted about this because their only source of income from the PS3 is it's software sales. They'd probably continue to lose millions and millions of dollars if they let piracy get out of hand...although I still believe that Blu-ray media is too expensive and the Blu-ray burner needed. So I think Sony doesn't really have much to worry about. The PS3 games are like 20GB+ so it's definately going to be hard to pirate over the internet. So Sony should look at those facts and realize they have nother major to worry about, other than the lost of so many exclusive.

Come on People Lets Get this thing straight First of all Sony or MS Does not care if there console is to be modified. modified or not they still get the income its just a press release we all know that they just produced 1 to 100 ratio in game making to make it clear both of them produced 1 out of 100 games out to be sold in the market. Making them the least looser when it comes to game making Plus a gain for there console. you may ask me why look at the Darkside of Business, an example of this is the Nintendo console what happen to them, poor sales you know why. No piracy, the logic is this why buy a cheaper console w/ expensive games where else you can buy a console thats expensive but a lot cheaper games. imagine for 54$ or maybe higher you can buy almost 10 pirated games else on originals you only get a shitty 1 mouthwatering game. The number one looser in this Piracy is the Game Makers They lost 80% of the market co'z the moment a cd gets into the hands of a winning piracy. Good bye Income, sorry for the Programmers your game is now almost free w/ the effort of creating it for weeks. the saying will someday be true that "Piracy kills Creativity" who would want to excert an effort in making a game that you work for weeks, hours or even months that just be sold for 2$. Grow up, To sum it up

Console makers w/ Pirated games (Winner)
Console makers w/ out Pirated Games (Looser)
Games W/ Anti Piracy ( Winner)
Games that can be Pirated (Looser)

    Make Sense

I Hate Over Prized Games but at the Same time I hate Piracy but to come and think of it. I wish they could have at least make the games cheaper in exchange of a deal that no more piracy rather than fighting them and making modders more determined. In My Opinion if I make something w/ my full effort I should at least make good of it in return. But if my effort is put to none I'ed rather not make them anymore and keep it to myself, as i say before my past posts "Piracy will Surely kill Creativity". Someday no more games will be made

Dont you all realize what this Sony message is REALLY about:

They are throwing down the gauntlet to the hackers IN THE HOPES that they will go out and BUY the ps3 to boost sales!

they aint worried about piracy or modding at all... what they ARE worried about is lagging sales, product sitting on shelves, reduced orders for more product and running out of propaganda to help give the false image that they are winnning the (name your war here).

The very nature of this letter from Sony gives the impression that this is a VERY BIG issue right now (which it is not) which gives the (false) impression that the ps3 is entrenched enough (it is not) for it to even be a big issue...

    just more Sony propaganda!

If Sony truly worries about the lagging sales, then for start - Sony should remove the region-protection from online experiences fors start! It will encourage more sales as people would buy games and play it against anyone around the world.

no wonder why Xbox Live is so popular over PS Network because Xbox live doesn't have that "region-protection"!

I never understand why Sony wanted to implement the region-protection for online experience, and yet they encourage all games to be "region-free"! a bunch of hypocritical, Sony executives are...

Good thing the God of Playstatoin (I forgot his name but you know who I refer to) is retiring from Sony, to distance himself and his reputation from this fiasco!

Sony - soon you remove region protection, it will improve your sales. Simple business lesson for you, - for free of charge!

Making a console as difficult to hack is music to a hackers ears. And tbo, most dont do it to play pirated games. They do it cos Sony said it cannot be done, which we all know is crap.

Plus, it's my console and I can do what I want to it. If SOny were that bothered then I'm sure they would stop the idiots smashing them in front of waiting people on release day ( he says sarcastically ).

Also piracy isn't making Sony, or anyone else loose money. I know of many people who have hacked 360's and all the others who simply wont buy the games anyway! If a console was impossible to hack, then sales of games wont go through the roof. And before you mention Dreamcast, ok that was hit hard by piracy, but it was so easy to play copied games on it that almost anyone could do it. I still here peoiple shocked that you can play copied games on a PSP.
Quite simply, the no of people with hacked consoles and games, are insignificant to the amount of legit players.

And besides Sony thinks it's gonna scare off these hackers by shouting and puffing their chests out!!?? Do me a favour!

If they do not sue a unique disc system like the Game cube and DC they them selfs are setting them selfs up to be hacked, I have had a few games in my life that would not boot under nomral circumstance and for some I only used copies of that game because I did not want to damage the original, then add the stagnation of 50+$ mediocre games I use backups and "copies" as means to test a games worth.

Altho the best way to stick it tot eh man is buy used nothign like buying a new "$60" game for 25$ off ebay or else where it only takes 2 or 3 months for a game to bomb!

For Online Play, it is your console, and you can do what you want to it.. Offline, but the moment you take it online, you are able to have a lifetime ban for online.

For Pirating Games, which this article is about.. I think we all know it is against the law to rent a game, burn it, and play it.

Otherwise, you can mod your console, as long as you don't copy a disc, or take your console online.

    Sony mole alert.....ROFL!

Quote:"Naturally, any use of an exploit on the system software does void the warranty on the PS3 system... Which could be a costly mistake to see if you can run an old SEGA CD game on it," said Karraker.noob alert....or just idiot alert. If someone is going to hack a $600 system, then the primary reason would be to play backup games that were made for that $600 system. Emulating an ancient system would probably be a Hard Drive homebrew afterthought. Heck, I didn't want to burn Sega CD discs to play on my modded XBOX, even if it could be done.

I have to say that duckNrun's comment about boosting sales could very well be a possibility. Once an official working firmware hack is released, consoles will start moving off the shelves IMO. I know I'll be getting one.

because some 6$ Sega CD games are better than the 60$ PS3 games, same can be said abotu Neo geo roms on the Xbox, but befor we can go there theres a year or 2 of coding and beta testing to do so I can wait :P

I cant wait till they start making the games support the newest firmware that will be fun LOL

I hope they make a PSX/PS2 emu hack that adds more standard emulation features to PSX/PS2 games, save states and speed hacks would be so fun :X

they aint worried about piracy or modding at all... what they ARE worried about is lagging sales, product sitting on shelves, reduced orders for more product and running out of propaganda to help give the false image that they are winnning the (name your war here).

The very nature of this letter from Sony gives the impression that this is a VERY BIG issue right now (which it is not) which gives the (false) impression that the ps3 is entrenched enough (it is not) for it to even be a big issue...

    just more Sony propaganda!

    lol
    Totally agree.

The PS3 is still not selling.

Ironically most people will buy one once they can figure out if it can be hacked.

At this moment in time, i may cross over to the Xbox

Odd...from what I have been reading its selling well enough, perhaps not as good as the WII or the easy break oven, but with prices coming down theres no reason why it wont do better.

The PS3s momentum is gaining but not snowballing yet, the WII has already snowballed into a freaking moon, I think the 360 is starting to lose ground.

All in all get a PS3 and 360 theres going to be enough lulls between them to need both or a WI.

well the ps3 problem was the price, but now ppl are buying the cheap version. As for xbox the 3 red light off death issue is wat slowed it down idk didnt they say it was a 60-66% rate of them doing that. And as for the wii smash bros and m-kart may being the only reason to buy one but for me the rest of the games dont have that much depth.

If you are a traditional game you can't go wrong with the PC,360,PS3 being your main system and then backing up with one of the other, PC/PS3 seems to have the best spread and options 360/PS3 the 2nd PC/360 redundant.

I like the wii and all but its needs 10 more games I want and 100$ off the asking price to be worth my money :P

Do you have any evidence to support that claim? Here is some information that is in total stark contrast to what you said.
