Xbox 360 price cut coming in less than a month?

Xbox 360 price cut coming in less than a month?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a price cut for the Xbox 360 could come as soon as August 8th.

The price drop would be a reasonable $50 USD but it is unknown whether the price dip would be for all 360 models or only certain ones such as the $479 USD Elite.

It is also unknown why the announcement was passed up at this year's E3 but analysts believe the price drop will be in unison with the release of the latest Madden, always a top seller.

Microsoft has so far declined to comment on the rumors or the sources but said they had nothing to announce at this time.

The move would certainly help Microsoft to counter Sony's recent price drop for its PlayStation 3 console and it would be the first pricing change since the system launched in late 2005 but we will keep you notified of more updates as they become available.

For some, that just might be the deciding factor as to which one to buy. And if they fix the little "early death" problem.

Same here, I'm waiting to see how this all shakes out before I go one way or the other. I'll just play my Wii until they both come down to earth.

They really need to drop it by $100, I mean it's been out almost 2years. I think the 360 would really make a bang if they would step out of their cocky attitude! They need to boost sells more than what they currently are doing..Nintendo has already caught up..Sony will soon. Microsoft better rethink their strategy because i'd hate for them to repeat an Xbox 1 wreck.

Yeah, who cares if your console is in the repair shop every 4 months. It's not like we game on a regular basis.

Price drops and extended warranties are good, but what they really need to do is re-engineer the console so we don't NEED the warranty anymore.

Ok for a start, i think we have already had a news post, that M$ have foudn away to stop the 3 rings fo death! They have added that heatseekign thingy to the GPU, so it doesn't overheat now!

in responce to theridges You are correct that M$ is beating Sony, heck because it is just a failing product. But saying taht the Wii in dominatign the Gaming Industry is not correct, althgough i love the Wii, and the many great fun i have had with it, you can't say that every hardcore / casual gamer has bought one, they probably have a 360, the wii is for first time gamers, and Nintendo Fb's, its winning its own new gaming market, not the games industry!

NOow on to the post, M$ this is pretty poor, i woudl ahve expected to see atleast $100 off the core and premium versions and then $50 of the elite! Its pretty much a garantee that when this happens, Sony's playstation 3 is sorta screwed to the point taht no price cuts will make ppl buy it, unless its a BR player they want, because Sony can't cut the price anymore because the BRA will get pissed at them for undercuttign everyone else!

i wish i could understand you non-English, English post!

I don't think the price will be for the core system, I've looked everywhere for the core and they are gone. Asked someone at bestbuy they said clearance item now.

I wonder if the price drop is to push out the rest of the bad 360's

My box got the 3 red lights of death, tried everything to fix it, can't send it back for various reasons, so if I don't get a core really cheap then I'll just wait till the fall when the new CPU's come out.

Easy-Bake Oven, never thought of that one before, maybe I'll list my old 360 as that on E-Bay.

Nintendo is owning when you compare profits only (they have made record profits in comparison to last year). But they are still a last-gen console, so you can't directly compare specs and gamer demographic. As for the heat sink fix, it's a temporary bandaid until the 65nm chips come out this Fall. It's still a "wait and see" in terms of how effective it is - (hence one reason for the extended warranty; if the new "heatsink fix" is a flop, at least they can fall back on the warranty to give gamers that warm fuzzy). Have to disagree on the "Wii is for gaming noObs and fanboys" comment. Granted every system has those, but it's pricing and innovation that are making the Wii's fly off the shelf. Even a Nintendo fanboy realizes that if they want an incredible visual experience, MS or Sony is the way to go vs. Nintendo's Gamecube 2.0.

A price drop would be great. They would be almost $100 cheaper (more if Sony bumps up the price again for the higher HDD model), and they don't force their HD format on you. If bluray loses and I have an 360, then I would consider buying the add-on. If bluray wins, then I'll be glad I didn't spend money on the add-on right away. I'm still waiting until next Spring until most, if not all of this blows over to decide which console to get. But it's like a see-saw now. +'s and -'s every couple of weeks from each camp. But in between then and now, I'll probably get a Wii just for the novelty of it ;-)

Who knows....maybe a price drop from MS would force Sony to re-evaluate a possible price increase - since it seems that they haven't picked up on the fact that more people are buying their console now that it's cheaper.

    Looks like they're sorted.

Big new heatsinks and in a month or so 65nm CPU & GPU.

.....and if you're still concerned there's an industry leading 3 year warranty.

It's just a great shame that the rest of the game business isn't confident enough to offer decent warranty cover like that.

3 year cover and long warranties generally ought to be the norm, not unusual.

    Riotard
the elite still overheat, sadly the only fix is the 64NM chips.
with those in stores and aa 100$ price drop it would boost MS up more than it would hurt.

MS has spent 20 billion on the Xbox/360 brand and have 5billon in current debt only 2 more than sony has currently and most of that is due to the fail rate issues,MS dose need to get the 64nm units out ASAP then after than do a price cut.

Microsoft should take thier products off the shelves until they can for sure fix the red rings of death. I mean its ridiculous! I bought mine new from walmart and a couple of days later red ring of death! ofcourse I traded it in for a brand new console at walmart but still thats beyond the point! they have a 33% faliure rate the ps3 has 1%.
to F*** increasing the warranty and the price drop and F****** fix the problem at the core! They can't afford the price drop while consoles are breaking left and right. They already can't handle the tsunami of broken consoles and with the price drop more people will buy it but that also means more broken consoles!!!

and on a different topic the wii has good sales only because of its family based advertising and realisticly the wii is an add on console, meaning you dont get it unless you already have a 360 or a ps3 and the 360 is a crap sack so the ps3 will previal! Back to the wii can you even find 10 games that got a 8.0 or higher for the wii? NO
The same can be said for the ps3 but look at its up coming games: MGS4, final fantasy 13, resident evil 5, beowulf, god of war 3, GTA4, heavenly sword, sabetour, stranglehold, assasins creed, DMC4, Blacksite: area 51, Burnout paradise, Time crisis 4 and a shite load more!!!

and most importantly of all Bluray has won the format war! seriously where the f*** can you buy a hd dvd?!?

At this point in the game a recall would be out of the question since they are months away from launching the 64nm chip units, the warranty+refunds is their fix and its reasonable sony did not do as much for the DREs back in the day so meh MS needs to get its house in order much like sony dose, they both need 100$ price drops (keeping the systems under 450$) sony needs to focus on 1 unit since they screwed up the launch so much MS just needs to get the new 64nm units out now and start replacing the warrantied units with them this is slow than a recall but they can manage money and rep better this way, mmmm prehaps I should not be so hard on sony if they can keep to the 500$ price point I think the PS3 wills tart doing better sooner but really they should have done this from the start if they launched the PS3 at 400 they would have took 2 billion in losses head on but would have done as well as the WII but now they are waffling and losing more money.

assasins creed, DMC4 are on the 360 as well and are some of the others, and no BR has not won and it wont win until Hdef steps out of the niche and into mainstream and we cant get to the final battle for at least 2 more years the prices are to high for most consumers oh and yes price is important why do you think the PS3 is failing like it has?

And before anyone starts market shares help heal losses of the game devision the trick is to offset losses by gaining market share and so far sony is neck and neck with the 360...and thats just pitiful.

You must be seriously deluded if you think that (in this case) a 3 year warranty is them showing confidence in their own product, the warranty is more to save M$ from lawsuits etc than anything else.

Plus you have to pay for an hd dvd player in the 360 but it comes standard with the ps3 and you get wifi. and the wii... well the wii is just so darn cute, to the point where you just wanna squeeze its cheeks, ring its neck and pop its little head off... *sigh*

gee if you pay 500 for a 360 it will come with a HDVD player think of that DOH!!!
Plus BR is not in some areas as well so meh,the format war is far from over and BR means nothing to gaming because the industry is supporting DVD9s so all in all BR has not won anything.

When we are weel into the console war the games will not even fit on dvds. Kojima said that he can't port his game to dvd9(xbox 360) because it won't fit! You are right though you can get an hd dvd w/ the 360 for 500 and you can get a 60 gigabyte, wifi capable, bluray capable, 1080p capable, non-overheating(lack of a better word), non breaking after a year or so console foir the same price. hahahha like it's even a choice plus microdoft just sucks go macs!

    1. This is Xbox magazine we're talking here...so guess who buys their magazines and pay their bills?

    2. This issue just came out, so the article was written weeks prior to E3.

    3. Kojima says its exclusive

    4. Kojima needs to use the 50 Gig blu ray.

    5. Some major parts of the game can only be done on PS3! eg. SIXAXIS controls, body suit camouflage uses special CELL processor only technique.

    6. JUST BUY A DAMN PS3 IF YOU WANT MGS4 SO BAD! ITS ONLY $500 and it doesn't die within months.!

No, people who back up their arguments without the USE OF CAPS, are not considered fanboys in my book. Plus, how can you possibly declare Blu-ray the winner in the HD format war, or insult the Wii which has 9 million units sold, double or more than the PS3.

I explained my position in previous posts but I'll humor you:

I said the wii is an add on console which means most hardcore gamers that have one have another next gen console along with it. Bluray won because first of all you can't buy an hd dvd from any retail store and video stores like blockbuster don't offer them they offer bluray. I like the wii but it doesn't satisfy my gaming and multimedia needs like a ps3 and like i said its cute.

I see the real exclusive "better" titles for the PS3 coming out lil by lil by the end of 08 by the time it gets to mid 010 the PS3 should be fully on tis feet game wise, hell by then it should be outselling the 360 if not it has fallen in the high end game niche.

There should be a few million extra 360's before the PS3 gets in it's stride next year.I'm hoping that the 360 keeps a portion of the gaming market and not allow Sony to steal the market for itself and thankfuly Nintendo has already prevented that anyway.I want all the players in the market,I don't want the Sony monopoly like in the last gen so I'm hoping Microsoft does better this time round despite their reliabilty problems.I like the software, the developers are working wonders with the 360 and the online system works very well.If Microsft fail this time round then I don't see them staying in the market much longer because I and others will just jump ship to either Nintendo or Sony, simple as that.

I don't see MS penetrating like Sony can even Sony with a limp bit it can get into markets faster at the right price, the 360 is a monopoly in itself and both of them are stuck in a Hdef niche, with Sony getting most of Asia as its anchor and then dripping out over the world it should clearly out pace the PS3 in a year or 2,the 360 has a solid foundation in the US and the UK with it slowly dripping around the world even with tis lead time on sony ,sony is catching up to them rather well for the ridiculous price its set at, and while MS and Sony play power games Nin will win with sheer price and profits and fun by the time the WII loses steam in 3-4 years I can see SOny picking up the left overs,I just dont see the 360 being able to get Asia (devs/gamers) interested in enough volume to fuel its take over of the gaming throne.

If MS would dev for the PC and 360 equally(at the most have a 6-9 month delay on PC releases) and remove vista only nonsense I would not call them a monopoly but sadly they are as bad as sony on some/most things.

I agree with you about Sony and Microsoft trying to monolpolise the gaming market ZIppyDSM but thats to be expected.Japanese companies are very efficient when it comes to business and they have fought internaly with their own competitors for years. It has taken a massive American company (Microsoft) to try to stand up amongst these giants that are Sony and Nintendo. We all know how the first
Xbox failed in penetrating the market even though it had good hardware at the time but it proves that it is very difficult to compete with what the Japanese have been doing for years.
I think people should give Microsoft some credit for trying atleast to offer an alternative gaming platform that is trying to grow the market in it's own way, mainly the online component.
As I have said before,I am giving Microsoft a second chance and I am enjoying the 360 despite reliability horror stories. If Microsoft fail this time round I don't think people will consider another console from them.So far,the games are shining on the platform. It looks like they have a future with many games on the horizon and new, cheaper, cooler 65nm 360's to win the hearts of the wary buyer.

Dont get me wrong IMO the 360 is a solid system even despite the 30% fail rate issue thats getting fixed by years end, what I do not like about it is the whole steal PC game theme of it and now they are pushing games to vista so in all they are very much like sony only the other side of the coin they both have issues which can damage the games they bring to market so I scoff at both reasonably.

Sony needs a price drop and a retooling of the PS3 unit to be consumer friendly not a new tech toy thing thats 5X the price and lasts about as long as new tech players and MS really needs to wake up and see the profits its missing from PC game sales by putting into place a system that helps get a game ported in less than a year and might can get a 2% profit off game sales for the added "support" what I am gettign at MS is hella lazy and unfocused at what profits they could make if they sat down and thought "ok this will run on XP so lets make the SP side run but delay online mode patch for 6+months" or something to innovate their schemes and not just lay there thinking vista/360 only sht will work.

All in all MS and Sony match each other well, both have screwed up both offer high end gaming at not a cheap price 300+ for premium 50/year for live the 360 is a random easy bake oven for chips and the PS3 is ignorant of the 500$ console limit

Nintedno is trying something different and its paid off however I think they could go the extra mile and have more depth in play control(rebinding, button mapping, ect) ,altho truthfully it might take another gen or 2 for the suits to udnerstand that control of control is as important as marketing.

Thats funny. Sony drops their prices and Xbox quickly follows. I'd like to see if they keep their prices down if/when Sony raises them again for the next shipment of PS3s.

The PC is losing games to the 360,PS3 and any other console, but to say the 360 is wholly stealing pc games is a bit biased.
I could say it's the PC thats stealing 360 games such as Halo,Gears Of War and Viva Pinata but I think thats crap aswell.
Lets face it,the PS3 and 360 are good enough to have cross-platform development along with PC's.The main reason the 360 is getting more PC games than the PS3 is because Microsoft owns the Windows platform, that includes DirectX and it's easier for developers to port games between the two.I read all about Microsofts concept of creating a platform based on DirectX for gaming before the first Xbox existed so it's no suprise the 360 is getting more games than any other console.
PC gaming won't be the pinnacle of gaming any more,it's had its day.Yes you'll get Crysis to justify the expensive rig you put together but people now have a choice to play FPS's and RTS's.
Piracy certainly didn't help PC gaming and thats just one reason why developers have switched to a more lucrative platform.Producing a game to work on all the different PC configurations that are out there, what with Beta Drivers and new Graphics cards appearing all the time is a constant pain in the ass and holds back development.
I've done PC gaming,Quake,Team Fortress,Counter Strike,DiabloI & II,etc and I enjoyed it but I would never go back to an antiquated platform because thats just how it feels now these consoles are available.I hear the legendary keyboard and mouse argument over and over but it sounds like desperation from die-hard PC gamers who can't accept that gaming is changing.
I seriously couldn't care less about Vista.I would rather buy a new console than upgrade an OS and PC hardware just to play a soddin' game that may not work because the graphics card needs an updated driver. My PC is now a computer, not a games machine and I'm happy that I don't have to keep upgrading it and updating drivers.
Being a nerd gets borring and I just want to switch on and play
and thats all there is to it.

please the Xbox was built on a steal PC game theme, most of its games where PC games at some point that where suddenly forced to the Xbox first or would have been better off on the computer, Halo is the game that amde the Xbox and it was months away from being on the PC then when MS bought out bungie they set it to Xbox only, of coarse since the Xbox is a US system alot of the games would be computer based in some way, really tho the Xbox is founded on PC style games you cant get away from that fact and with that fact it is reasonable to state it throttles games to the 360 first when ever it gets a chance for instance Gears of war its PC release is slated in 09/010.

Currently with more devs gettign into consoles either games are console first, released on both console and PC in the same month or not released on the PC at all.

The Xbox was founded on a PC game theme and the since then the industry has nudged away from the PC at least the minsteam industry has and this makes me feel even more annoyed with it ,it dose feel like they are stealing PC games when a FPS or something that screams PC winds up solely on a "console" when MS is founded on PC style gaming and the industry snubbing PC gaming some are goign to feel bit disspointed.

All I'm saying is,the 360 can't take all the blame for losses on the PC's games front.I played Doom,Theme Park,Wing Commander III and a load of other games on a doomed 3DO when they were originaly on PC.
The PS3 is getting it's share of PC cross-platform games and I'm sure Sony aren't objecting.
Even if the 360 died a failure,I would rather buy a PS3 to continue my gaming on,than update a PC for Vista enhanced games.'Unreal Tournament' is one example where I'd rather get the console version.
I don't care much about the PC gaming platform any more and it's obvious from developers that consoles are mostly their preferred format.May aswell blame every gamer out there as they are the ones who determine profits in the gaming industry.Consoles are growing the game industry far more than what the PC is doing.I remember the PC absorbing games from the Amiga and Atari ST but I didn't cry about it,I simply sold my Amiga and bought a PC.The mass market dictates what platform lives or dies and I'd rather not waste energy swimming against the tide.

Actuality MS can be blamed for some of the damage done to PC gaming and because of it it has lost even more favor with mainstream devs, I guess it had its days numbered ever since consoles went 3D ,it was only a matter of time before the number of consoles would out number the number of PC hardware capable of running like games.

All in all I do not dismiss what MS has done as I do not dismiss sonys current line of of mistakes as well as the over all vib of the industry(which would be quantity of shortsighted games over quality and polish even support is laughable sometimes).
