PlayStation 2 still the most played console, by far
Although the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 dominate most current headlines, the Sony PlayStation 2 continues to be the most played system in the US as well as one of the best selling.

According to Nielsen GamePlay Metrics, the PS2 accounts for just over 42 percent of current game use in the US. The Xbox (original) holds the distinction of second place, at a distant 17 percent. The Xbox 360 is at 8 percent while the Nintendo Gamecube held at just under 6 percent.

The Wii, although enjoying incredible sales since its launch in November 2006, is played in only 4 percent of households while the PS3 stood at 1.5 percent placing ahead of the Nintendo 64 and PSOne.

Nielsen said it used 33,000 individuals from 12,000 households to get its data for the month of June.

Yeah i can see that with them continuing selling new games even with the Next Gen systems being popular. My son and daughter play theres all the time so its understandable. Plus plenty of titles old and new.

I personally like the sleek and small PS2. Besides not everyone owns a HDTV. Which is what suppose to make the games on the XBOX 360 and PS3 look great.

I had 2 PS2s. but kept the Fat and sold the Slim. The Slim get's to hot, it was worth more money, and the Fat is a lot easier to use the swap method. You don't even have to buy anything. All you need is cogswap in your exploit on the memory card, and your good to go.

LOL i love my PS2, but i'd never understand what made the original PSONE so popular when it came out. It had nintendo's competition, and nintendo was more known back then. What made PS so popular!?

Yes of course the PS2 is the most played because it was the best consoles when it came out. So therefore its the most bought and played. The new consoles will take sometime before they can get figures like the ps2 does.

Well read the article...they are NOT doing it so far! And the "new" consoles have been out awhile. Especially the Xbox 360! Not a very good indicator of what people think of buying one, now is it?

Just HOW LONG are you talking about it taking for the newer consoles to catch on...a millenium?

Some people simply do not HAVE $400 to $600 to spend on a console!

But they don't seem to mind spending 99 bucks or less for a decent console that has tons of games.

And lets not forget the PS ONE came well advertise with Resident evil and Tomb Raider.

Both games kicked ass back then.

I don't think the Wii will ever catch up to the PS2 though. Their trailing at the heels of the last generation. As interst in the PS2 fades, so will that of the Wii, because next gen gaming will probably be more affordable and there will be a larger catalog of games. If Nintendo is smart, they will release a true "next gen" system in the next couple of years.

I love my PS2. Well worth the money for my fat PS2 with a DMS4 chip and HDD. I get to mess around with new games every month. Sony is smart not to quit on the PS2 game development. They need something to counter the PS3 losses for the first couple of years. Hope the PS2 games keep coming!

I think the PS2 was so successful because of the PS1. The PS1 was the only console of its kind when it was released. The PS2 was the logical choice when it was released, it just 'made sense'. But now most people face a 3-way decision of what console they want.

I still play on my original PS2 and can't fault it (other than it not having HD). I don't want any fancy media features, I have a PC for that.

Noooo no no no no. Turbografx (PC Engine) was using CDs for games looooong before Ps1 came out. And, so was the sega Mega CD in Japan.

Haha! I wont feel surprised if Sony discontinues PS3 and start PS2 production again.
And ofcourse PS2 and next-gen console on composite cables look pretty much the same.

Man, PS2 is releasing over 60 more games from now until end of this year, including some popular sequels - NFS, Guitar Heroe 3, Mercenaries 2, a new Tony Hawk, Spyro, DDR Supernova 2,Spiderman, NBA/NHL/FIFA 08 games, Indiana Jones, a new Growlanser, Uzumaki Chronicles 2 etc...even another Final Fantasy late to early next year. Konami is even making games for really little kids. I've been only able to find Dora The Explorer for my 4 year old. Looks like their last game may be Duke Nukem Forever, with a release date of Q4 2008 (at least that is all Gamespot is aware of). Just in time for me to decide on a PS3 or XBOX360 :-)

I'm glad the ps2 is still strong and alive since its released since 2001.

I just got a fat ps2 from garage sale and I'm happy I have a new console, since my last console I ever bought was a NES.

    PC doesn't count. :)

The new consoles will take sometime before they can get figures like the ps2 does. That's not exactly true. What made it the best anyway? I mean, I've heard people boast about how the XBOX has better graphics, better hardware, better this and that than the PS2, and yet, the PS2 still dominates. Why? One, if not the, major factor that is often overlooked is that the PS2 has a wide variety of video games available for it while the XBOX has a rather small variety of games available. With the exception of multi-platform games, there's just more of a variety to attract a wider audience.
