YouTube expects anti-piracy tech in September
YouTube hopes recognition technology will be in place in September to stop the posting of copyrighted videos on the popular website, a lawyer told a judge presiding over copyright lawsuits on Friday.

Philip S. Beck, told U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton in Manhattan that YouTube was working "very intensely and cooperating" with major content providers on a video recognition technology as sophisticated as fingerprint technology the FBI uses.

He said the company believes the new technology goes way beyond what the law requires to stop copyright infringement.

Lawyers for plaintiffs in the two lawsuits said they welcomed any improvement that would end alleged infringement of their copyrights but believed YouTube should have acted sooner.

Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., a lawyer for Viacom International Inc., said it will take the next year to identify the extent of infringement that continues to happen on "a very massive scale."

"Perhaps the filtering mechanism will help. If so, we'll be very grateful for that," he said. He added "they acknowledge rampant activity and haven't done anything to stop it."

It's illegal. But while YouTube flushes down the toilet, like the hydra, it sprouts about a hundred baby video websites. But hey, the place is easy to upload a video to, so that lets dweebs have fun with kittens, bunnies, and a toy vid cam.

Well come September, I think that youtube will become like the "old" Napster..only having a handful of people on it at a time, while everyone else goes to other places.

I seriously doubt that it was "home movies" that made youtube as popular as it has become.

I also doubt it will stay as popular as it is, when the new technology gets put into place. So the bigwigs that own it better think again if they think this move is going to INCREASE their profits...it will certianly DECREASE them...I can tell you that.

Then they will realize too late... like the original Napster... that they made a stupid move. But that is just par for the course for a corporation.

im not so sure filtering technology is going to work that well. that means for them to effectively filter ALL copywritten material they will have to have a MASSIVE database with EVERY COPYWRITTEN WORK KNOWN TO MAN in it, and every time someone uploads a video it will have to be scanned by EVERY "fingerprint" to find the match and reject the upload. i just dont see this happening. what i can see happening is that youtube will become a few degrees harder than it is now to upload a copywritten work to. people will change the colors a hue or shade, people will alter the video or audio, i think a filtering system can be beat. and we all know how youtube LOVES to do what media companies tell them too, i wouldnt be surprised if youtube purposefully makes it less than effective. they said they would have this technology over a year ago, but they purposefully drug their heels. i think that the filtering system will work, but only for the most popular tv shows and movies and whatnot, lesser known works they wont bother with because they will have a load on their plate just with the popular stuff.

Its great to see at least YouTube trying to fix the issue at hand. Give them time and they will probably come up with something.

Perhaps AFTERDAWN could keep a running track of all the new video outlets with ratings and what is 'safe' to upload to them?
