Why didn't Sony develop a plug in card for the PC to do all this hardwork, wasn't that what CELL was made for?Or was all that PR about it's media capabilites a load of BS?
A card with Quad CELL would prove the whole point of making it in the first place.

Yeah, what are you talking about? You mean you want a PROCESSOR to run through something like, say, PCI EXPRESS??? Somehow, I think you got the wrong thread! :-)

At least CyberLink is optimizing their software. I can't even get a heck of alot out of my Core 2 right now with most apps.

The Cell processor is not just Sony - it was a joint project of IBM, Toshiba and Sony.

Actually there are PCI Express accelerator boards with Cell processors developed by Mercury Computers for advanced graphics workstations and medical imaging applications.

This is good news we need more apps that can utilize multiple cores that aren't just for servers. I like DVD Rebuilder because it can handle multiple cores, transcoding is tons faster on a dual core machine.

I had thought of going to an Intel Quad but after building my last Core2Duo 6300 and running it against a OLD 939pin X2 4400 my AMD performed as well as the newer Insmell so no more expensive Insmell for me. A 4400 shouldn’t give a 6300 a run for the money but AMD hands down rocks.

Just a side note: If you are running XP the Quad Core does you no good you will need Vista, 2003, or higher to run a quad.

Thanks for that info on the Mercury's CELL PCI EXPRESS card.If Cyberlink Corp could produce the video software to run on that then I would buy one.I wouldn't buy a new PC with Intel Core 2 Quad processors just to encode some HD video. Why don't Cyberlink Corp support other processors? Is it just a deal with INTEL to sell the QUAD core because I don't think there are many out there compared to DUAL CORE.
I'd like to offload some HD video encoding onto a console as a cheap alternative but Hell would have to freeze over first.

ChromeMud: You misunderstood. The Mercury Cell Accelerator Board is not for regular PC's. It's only for high-performance workstations like the IBM 9228 and the Sun Microsystems Ultra 40. These are used in digital content creation, military/defense applications, medical imaging etc. The Mercury boards likely cost several thousand dollars each.

    Actually the specification states :-

    Cell Accelerator Board Software
Cell 64-bit Linux® operating system and drivers
Linux and Windows® XP64 drivers and host
In host operation, operates with customer-supplied Windows XP64
    or 64-bit Linux operating system.
Host Cross Tool Chain for development for Cell PPE and SPE

So I'll stick it in my mainframe and control it with my PC
I'll order just 4 then, keep it simple eh!

They should go very well with your 4320p UHD monitor.

Gotta give it to Cyberlink though. At least they keep their software up to date with all the advancements. That is more than can be said for other companies.
