LightScribe announces 12 new CE and SMB licensees
LightScribe has announced that an additional 12 hardware brands, personal computer and optical drive manufacturers, media brands and disc publishing systems manufacturers have licensed its direct disc labeling technology, bringing the total number to over 80 hardware and software companies now licensed to use the technology.

Apricorn, Ativa, Gear Head, and Sony; personal computer manufacturer MESH Computers; optical disc drive manufacturer Sony NEC Optiarc; media brands Ativa, Intenso, KODAK Media Products, and Vakoss; and disc publishing systems manufacturers Advanced Digital Research, Amtren, and Mexty Productions are among the latest to license the technology.

The growing base of disc publishing systems manufacturers represents growing application of LightScribe products in the small-to-medium business (SMB) market. Over 40 million LightScribe-enabled drives and 150 million CDs and DVDs have shipped to date. Additionally, LightScribe-enabled drive shipments account for 17% of all DVD burners manufactured
on a monthly basis.

"Recent customer research shows LightScribe in use by business and consumers alike," said Kent Henscheid, marketing manager for LightScribe. "Frequent users of optical media are particularly appreciative of LightScribe media's professional look and prefer it over other labeling methods."

When your writer has lightscribe feature, you can print the CD LABEL of a lightscribe CD/DVD that you can design in the program that is bundled with your writer.. just remember you can only print a LABEL in a LIGHTSCRIBE CD/DVD, you can print the label by inserting the CD/DVD upside down (meaning the readable part is facing upward)

Lightscribe is too expensive, approx .75 per dvd, and all you get is black and gold, also takes too long to process the image, about 14 minutes. Price of media will go down with these new licensees. Media does look pretty cool in the center hub.

I would recommend getting ink jet printable media and print nice full color labels directly on the CD/DVD with an epson printer. Otherwise wait for color Lightscribes that will require additional hardware. Lightscribe DVD media when used to burn movie ISO work well in standalone DVD players with a high success rate for playback.

It's the biggest expense for my house. I have a spindle of Lightscribe CD's and DVD's. Complex images take a while, but simple text and a simple design is pretty fast. Color discs would be great. I've been waiting on those for a long time. Hopefully with more manufacturers on board, this might become a reality sooner than later.

The would do far better teaming up with a company to produce the disk cheaply... as they are to far and few between at the suppliers still and the prices are still high comparied to that of say white printable top disk.

    Like c1c said.

However if the Black could be stronger at faster write speeds and the price brought down i would use it over a water soluable printing solution any day, it just looks far more professional.

I use lightscribe for backup copy of my cd disk (special ones) or dvd movies. This allow me to put my name to the disk. Avoiding anyone to take it since it is signed by me and if anyway the person take it away cannot show it to others because of the name.

Thanks chinick,if it had not been for your working demonstration of how the lightscribe system is used to mark disks, i wouldn’t have never know what it was for....

... Just to surmise ur saying that you use lightscribe so you can mark your disks to identify them later and prevent other people for saying that its not yours.

If so thank you so much for that enlightening post.

Lightscribe is so much better than the black sharpie I've been using for years. Not as cost effective, but looks better.
