New Zunes better but still not iPod killers

New Zunes better but still not iPod killers
Microsoft announced new Zune models, and upgrades to the second generation functionality for first generation players, but analysts are saying the company needs to change strategies if they want the Zune to compete with Apple's industry leading iPod. The new models include two flash based players - 4GB and 8GB, and another with an upgraded 80GB hard drive.

"This device with the all-too-familiar dial wheel compares reasonably favourably with last generation iPod players," said Mark Mulligan, analyst with Jupiter Research. "Microsoft needs to come at Apple from an unexpected angle but at the moment it is Apple with its new iPod touch and nanos that is shaking up the market," he said.

At the launch event for the new Zunes, Bill Gates compared Microsoft's current digital media strategy to the company's past work in gaining acceptance for Office, saying "Twenty years ago we bet the company on an integrated productivity suite of word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and we changed the way people work."

The problem is that Apple has already changed the way many people purchase and listen to music. If Microsoft, or any other company, truly wants to compete with iPods or iTunes they'll need to come up with something new to get consumer attention. Until then, the Zune will come off to most as simply an iPod copy.

Am more of a iPod person. Zune never really did anything for me and apple has added key features for my liking. Plus it doesnt help that I dont care for M$ products which is my own OPINION but again for any of these other music/video handheld companies to knock apple off they need to integrate something new and attractive in their players to make people forget about apple. But when you look at it like that its kinda hard to say what the hell would people like another product more. Heres a couple idea's that might be useful to some. Maybe wireless charging, auto sync with all bluetooth and infrared and wireless internet links that are open. I know these are a stretch in price or overkill so these are idea's. Maybe remote desktop or even to a game system for some where you can play your home game system as a 3rd party add-on kinda like the psp setup for ps3 but better that you have full control over it. Or even accept TV or Satellite broadcast in HD and be able to record to it like a DVR service. These are idea's not a real reality type thing would happen. But as for right now there isnt many things left to add to a handheld device that will attract people further in whats already done. With these things said if any are a real chance of happening price will always be a factor and will always make or break a product.

I'm so sick of the Zune being compared as a "iPod Killer".... that is such an unfair comparison...apple has been at it for how many years now? If you want to compare...compare a Zune to a 1st Gen iPod... how long did it take apple to come out with their 2nd gen ipod? Years! This is MS's 2nd gen Zune and they came out with it within a year of the first.

The Zune is what it IS...a good MP3 player with features that are may or may not appeal to you. Apple has market share...doesn't mean they are the best...just that they were the first. Zune has a long ways to go, but knowing MS...they'll get there!

Ya, and $2000 for an iMac is chump change.

Raj_DJ, take it back. ipods are made in China. I think the reason ipods dropped their price is the Chinese are selling their own for very little money, cutting out the middle man. The software is not the same and does SUCK. I bought one for $15 plus $30 S&H. The software is almost non existant. They are basicly flash drives that can play music. The problem is you need software to select what you want to play which they lack. You must play the music in suffle mode. Still a 8 GB nano for $50 is OK if you can't afford better.

Bill so dumb he would tear apple apart if ZUNE had a browser in it's wi-fi. WI-FI is here for a reason to freakin network pcs's not to buy music from micro$oft's gay ass music store and quicly send bill more money.

You gotta give props for microsoft for supporting zune one firmware. Unlike apple which is ipod 5gen and ipod 6gen is the almost same thing. They didn't update the firmware for us

The only way a device is going to beat the ipod if they simplyfy the way music is transfered to the device like just dragging and dropping it into the device without the need of itunes or any media managing software.

I wound up buying my son one. I hate them too. They are a terrible copy. They have added the idiot feature from HELL. I think it would be just another knock off with out it but with it is a HELL HOUND! It has some auto loader that searches all available drives including networked drives looking for tunes. You can't turn it off or tell it where to look. I have an old computer with large and fast hard disks. This baby slows down the computer with its insane searches. I gets so confused it doesn't obey what you tell it to do. I built a sync list then synced. The F*cker ignored the list and put random stuff on the Zuine. To get it off you got to remove those tunes from your computer! What a piece of crap!

That is Microsoft's iPod killer! They used to be smarter than that.

The wife got me a Zune for Christmas. As far as what i use it for, an MP3 player, it's fine. Not great, not a knock out, and most certainly not an Ipod killer; but good. My only real complaint about it at this point is the goofy software that took some getting used to.

My life never began with "once upon a time" so why would i expect it to end with "happily ever after"?

When did you install it? Maybe the evil auto-load function was just a bad experiment. I am sure it was designed to make it easy to find your tunes not concidering how odius it could be on an older computer with access to massive disk space. We can read only all disk space on all computers on our house hold net. I unintalled the software after a few days or so of not being able to do much on my computer because it was so slow. Apparently that stops after all disks are scanned.

    Ipod vs Zune? Ipod
    Apple vs Microsoft? Apple

I own a Mac, Microsoft is unoriginal in my eyes. They often see something out in the world doing well and attempt to mimic it but do a poor job. The Zune is just a knockoff of the Ipod. Vista is a knockoff of OSX and is not stable and lacks support that XP had. Xbox 360 isn't bad (I owned one for a couple months) but after all the problems they have as well as no HD support initially they seem to rush their products out into the market so they can gain ground but have many issues in doing so.

I don't see much difference between the two. The ipod was still a knock off. They did not invent mp3 players. They just did a great job! I do expect someone to blow them away but it will not be Microsoft. I am guessing it will be the Chinese. I will say Apple has shown great market savey and have a better pulse on the market place. However, they may even be more sleazy then MS in some of what they do. Both are HUGE sleaze balls. Maybe you aren't aware that they sabotage high quality ripped tunes made by non apple products going on to the ipod during the sync. I resent that they think I am too stupid to see through their stupid tricks. I can tell you they are the slimiest of the bunch. Only Apple worshipers could forgive all the crap they do to their customers. They prey on ignorance.
