Verizon boasts of an "iPhone killer"

Verizon boasts of an iPhone killer
Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman has said that the company will be adding four new devices to its lineup of phones set for release in the holiday season 2007. One of these phones, the LG VX10000 Voyager he claims will be an "iPhone killer."

"We think it'll be the best phone ... this year. It will kill the iPhone," Lanman added.

The device has a 400x240 touch screen but Verizon says it is shaped more like the LG enV than the iPhone.

The Voyager's touch screen affords "large icons, and the now-familiar "swiping" motion navigates through an eye-catching UI." It also has a handy QWERTY keyboard which allows the user to handle tasks using either the keyboard or the touch screen.

Verizon also says the phone has "Full HTML browsing, VCAST support, a new mobile e-mail service managed by Verizon, and mobile IM client."

The device also includes an almost standard 2MP camera, a music player, and stereo speakers. The internal memory is expandable to 8GB via microSD and the music player can support MP3, Windows Media Audio, and AAC files.

Verizon has one of the largest and strongest networks in the US and it will be good to see this new "iPhone killer" at work.

Lets see how many companies will try to kill the iPhone. The iPhone its nice I want one. I seen on ebay they had a China made phone that works damn near the same as the iPhone with almost all the same features except wifi and the navigation feature the iPhone has for only $200 or less and its getting great reviews. Verizon is being cocky with this article. that LG phone doesnt even look as attractive as the iPhone. All i will say is game on with these companies trying to compete with apple.

Some questions left to be answered are the size of the internal memory, battery life, and if it will be locked to verizon. Also, not that I like Apple or wouldn't like to see something come out that is a total knock-off of an Apple product knock out said Apple product, but I think the Iphone will last for awhile because it has the large everything Apple fanboy base that will support it. It will take a lot of work for a knock-off to outdo the Iphone.

Aren't all phones that come out for use on Verizon's network tied to their network only or can you use them on other carier's networks?
Either way I bet it would be alot easier to crack it than the iPhone has been.

the voyager looks to me like a sick phone, and im definitely going to buy it (my enV broke, no insurance) although i dont think it will kill the iphone, it will give it a run for its money, especially if it has an affordable, attractable price this holiday season.

The iPhone is nice, I played with my friend's last night. However, until they fully unlock it so you can update it without it bricking I am not going to buy one. I prefer T-Mobile over AT&T.

    Peace

EDIT: Has anyone noticed how 99% of "Killers" really are not?

LG has been making phones for A LOT longer than Apple. They might just be able to create something that both works well and is wanted by folks.

Sure, there are silly robots who buy anything with an Apple logo on it (still have your Apple Pippin? or the Motorola Rokr?) but most tech savvy people will judge a product (mostly) on it's merits. Most of us, anyway.

Apple has created an image for themselves so people will just buy it people buy ipods and iphones because of name brand just like clothes they buy so they can look cool bottom line if somebody went up and said look guys i just got an LG touch screen phone compared to someone who says hey look guys i got an iphone most likely people are gonna want to see the iphone it's just a popularity thing while still being able to listen to music and watch videos.

i disagree. i bought an archos instead of an ipod and people all looked at my archos which is obviously superior to the ipod, and wanted to know all about it.

people just dont know what is out there, everyone is open to getting the best product for the price. it just needs to make it mainstream enough for people to hear about it. if there is a phone that is better than the iphone, people will find out about it. as for this one.. id have to play with both to make a decision of my own. but im starting to hate apple, so im most likely going to wait until something can beat the iphones ass.

    I totally agree with you.
I'm definitely going to be looking into this phone, you can't beat verizon. I have the first gen chocolate now, but this could be next next phone.

But Apple has gone about the phone thing different than the other companies. Apple just built a new iPod with basic programs and a very well designed touch screen... then they slapped a phone in, thus the iPhone. -Smart thing in my opinion.

Phone companies have been building phones and slapping everything they can into them. example, phones have pretty crappy cameras in them and then you have to buy software from the phone carrier to get the pics off or pay to have them emailed somewhere (Usually... Verizion is pretty bad at that)
    - take my razor for instance, cool looking phone, but horrible menu navigation and it's completely locked... Restricted bluetooth access and doesn't show up on any computer when I plug it in via USB.

That is why I don't think phone companies will ever create a phone that will surpass a product (such as an iPod) with a phone built in.

I don't know if that phone is the Iphone killer, although I have seen better phones then the LG. Check out the HTC Touch if you want to see a better phone and for your info the HTC Touch was out before the IPhone. Just my two Cents.

I think Apple deserves some credit for doing something most if not all cell phone companies wont do which is giving you a full multi-media based phone that offers more in memory and quality then most phones that cost the same if not more. I always liked PDA styled phones with a lot of features and im techie person so its a lot of good benefits from the iPhone. I dont know about this LG i will need to play around with it and get a better look at the make and features it will offer. So far the only real issues i see with this phone is the screen isnt that big in comparison to the iPhone and they said memory expandable to 8gb's which means if its the compact flash or any of the other forms of cell phone compatible memory you will end up spending more money then you need. So hopefully they will include either a 4gb stick or 8gb that will make this phone if nothing equal to or better then the iPhone pending the features and quality.

Just my two Cents.I priced one of the HTC phones (HTC Tilt 8925) it offers a lot but the price is crazy lmao. What model are you referring too and is it the same or cheaper in price in comparison to the iPhone. Also if nobody seen this i was looking in ebay for a iPhone and came across the iPhone copy which looks and functions damn near the same as the real thing.

Looks cool but you never know when you buy copies even though i seen great reviews on google for it plus its $200 or slightly over that.

it is possible that this could kill the iPhone but who knows. Other phone companies are probably working on iPhone killers now too. Sooner or later something is gonna have to top it.

APPLE has always been a sign of overpriced garbage, from computers to mp3 players, and now phones. The only thing apple has is the advertising dollar. The American people will buy anything, even a bag of dogs**t if it was well packaged and advertised.

I am liking the sound of competition; The new LG phone wont kill the iphone; apple is too good at advertising dogs**t and selling it, but it will allow people with common sense an alternative to what is currently available

Explain to me, and probably the rest of the world why Apple is so "garbage"?

I wouldn't have much of a problem with Apple except that their products are too proprietary that one has to resort to warranty voiding modding in order to customize or upgrade any Apple hardware. And by "upgrading" I mean without having to completely buy a brand new product rather than upgrading one component. Notice how you have to buy a brand new Ipod to get a different HDD size, rather than just a new HDD. Or, that you need a new computer rather than just upgrading the video card. Also, the prices really make the whole proprietary thing worse.

T-Mobile just came out with unlimited calling in wi-fi zones including home and t-mobile hot-spots for an extra $9.95 per month. I am dumping my home phone and looking for a wi-fi phone.

your right crap is a more suitable word, its smaller and smells worse.
apple products speak for themselves, and by the way, the rest of the world uses windows and linux, from businesses to home computers, unless your a school teacher, no one uses macs. one more thing to add on the proprietary side, on an ipod, if your battery stops charging what happens, you have to buy a new ipod...new battery 40 bucks, new ipod, 80-500 bucks, overpriced crap correctly justifies apple products.

Actually, Apples marketshare has soared over the last 12 months.

This could get interesting as Linux chews at MS from the cheap end, Apple chews on them from the quality/stability direction, and Google starts taking apart their software dominance.

    looking at the vx10000

    http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/17112/lg-vx10000-voyager/

Its a phone that tries to look like an iphone whilst giving you a device that reminds me more of htc wizard or herms, once you open it up.

But its not got as nice looking interface as the iphone nor the power of wm5 or wm6 on a wizard phone.

Due to this i feel its not going to kill off the iphone more that it will become the poor mans iphone due to a less expensive price tag.
