Sony planning Blu-ray player price drop

Sony planning Blu-ray player price drop
Sony Electronics president Stan Glasgow has said that more than a couple Blu-ray players will drop in price to around $399 USD in part to keep up with the mass price drops on Toshiba HD DVD players.

For those hoping the players will drop in price even more, Glasgow had this to say. "I don’t expect it to go much lower than that."

The president went on to say that Sony was planning new players for 2008 with "possibly 1.2" features.

The 40GB PlayStation 3 is set to begin selling at $399 USD making it the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market.

Surely they mean "2.0" features, there is not "1.2" in the BR spec. just 1.1 and 2.0.

Still, if they can't get a player under $250 for Christmas, it might be a tough road from here on out for the Blu camp.

here's a tip.get a ps3 for the same price which is more kickass than a lame dvd player.now sony take your blu-ray players and put em at 299 bcuz it makes no sense for them to be as expensive as the ps3 console.

These price drops are great. Sure, the players that are cheap aren't the best but it helps get the HD players noticed and allows more (uneducated) consumers into the market.

With the "get free movies" deal that goes on and the ever-cheaper prices we just might see a real nice growth in both sides of the HD war this holiday season.

Maybe by next holiday season we will find a real winner. :P

    Peace

You nailed it on the head Pop_Smith, right on! I wonder if Sony wants the PS3 cheaper so that more people are driven to buy a PS3 right now, becuase you all are right it just doen't make sense. With exception to the typical game console sales model used these days and that is sell the box for a lose and make it up on the games.

its obvious what sonys is tryin to do...they want ppl to buy a ps3 as a movie/gaming unit so they can say they sold alot of ps3's and also get ppl to buy movies so it looks like its selling alot of both which is not happening....but alot of ppl i know dont really care for a ps3 cuz they have a 360 or wii or not a gamer but would like a blu ray player for a cheap or reasonable price but it seems that HD is showing respectable and reasonable prices so sony drop those prices cuz this holiday ur gonna see alot of hd dvd players as gifts and then HD DVD sells go up......

1080p TV screens can only show 1080i progressively (and therefore as 1080p) anyways.

Unless you have a really cr@ppy & cheapo 1080p TV with a sh*tty deinterlacer in it 1080i means absolutely nothing to you.

If you don't have 1920x1080 resolution you can't have anything more than 720p/1080i anyways.

The whole 1080p 'issue' is almost entirely just marketing BS and the usual fanboy misunderstood BS.
