PSN to be down during GamesCom

PSN to be down during GamesCom
According to Joystiq, the PlayStation Network will be down tomorrow from noon to 2PM EST for "maintenance," conveniently timed as Sony is set to have a press conference at the GamesCom event.

While the service is down, PSP and PS3 gamers will not be able to play online or access the store.

Rumors have been floating around that the store is closed so Sony can release, unannounced, firmware 3.0 which could possibly bring software emulation for PS2 backwards compatibility.

GamesCom is the expected announcement date for long awaited PS3 price cuts.

Hopefully they can stick with updating the backwards compatability unlike xbox which scrubbed theirs just to make room for downloading full 360 games.

If it (backwards compatibility) does come out, it'll only be up to about 75-80% compatibility. I thought MS was improving their backward compatibility...did they quit updating it??? Also, it's been reported elsewhere that 3.0 firmware probably won't be out for another 6-8 weeks, so it COULD just be some major updates to PSN itself.

I have one of the launch 60GB units w/ the PS2 chipsets, so that aspect doesn't really affect me, but I know many others have been BEGGING for it. I'm just weary of software emulators because they're ALWAYS somewhat buggy (unless they tweak the emulation for each individual game...and over 1800 titles would be a tall order to do that for).

Man, now i won't be able to get on PS3 Home tomorrow :'(((

As much as I would like to see PS2 compatibility brought back, I'd imagine that it could be more trouble that it's worth for Sony. Remember all the b*tching back when 360 didn't have all its xbox1 games working? I remember people b*tching back when PS3 used to have it.

I'd like to see the PS3 slim for a low price with PS2 compatibility... PS2 owners would finally upgrade then.

Whahaha, PSN is so weak they need the whole network for the gamecon.

seriously though i don't know why they'd be shutting it down. seems like more than maintenance.

I think they may be updating PSN as mentioned in the conference, but who knows. I'm still angry that the VidStore hasn't opened in Canada, but is now opening in Europe...

i remember reading that the emotion engines in the original 60gb ps3's had something like 96% playback compatibility in comparison to the software emulation on the 20gb that was roughly 80%. why cant they bring the emotion engine back now that they report they cut costs in half. to this day if i ever decide to buy a ps3(if they release more disgaea titles im gonna have to) then its definitely gonna be a used 60gb with the EE. only cause i have a large library of ps1/ps2 games. otherwise backward compatibility is a big load of crap, next we gonna see genesis cartridges shoved into wii's cause it said it played classic titles

i would rather have software emulation than nothing at all.

I just want to play GT4 again; I haven't played it since I burned up my PS2. I'd buy another copy off the PSN if they would sell it (for a reasonable price).

And don't say "just get gt5 prologue" - I am not going to spend $30 on a demo.

Great to see even though you have no clue about console gaming you still post on a playstation discussion lol so sad.

On topic: hopefully they bring down prices so xbox will follow, all consoles are still overpriced.

    @Hopium

I have the 60gb PS3 and while it does play all my old PS2 titles, there is a painful input lag on the controller. Some people even say that the games look better on a PS2. Something about the smoothing.

I use my PS3 for tournaments from time to time. All the Capcom vs SNK2 fighters couldn't play. That was with both a regular sixaxis and usb to ps2 adapter. I have a genesis collection for PS2 and it was completely unplayable. I need to get another PS2 :-\
