Samsung to phase out Windows Mobile platform?
According to an investment note from HMC Investment Securities, Samsung is ready to deal the death blow to Windows Mobile by phasing out the mobile operating system in favor of the open source Android.

HMC Analyst Greg Noh says Samsung's use of WinMo will fall from 80 percent this year to 50 percent in 2010 and finally to just 20 percent in 2012.

On the other hand, Samsung will be increasing use of the Android platform by 30 percent each year in the same time frame. Symbian will be killed off by 2011 and a new Samsung OS will eventually control about 50 percent of the company's phones.

The new rumor follows the rumor that HTC, currently the world's largest WinMo device maker, will be switching over 50 percent of their devices to Android in 2010.

We are right on the edge of true PC capabilities on these devices...it won't be too long before we see phones that can run real windows or real linux, or maybe even Snow Leapord. These estimates seem to ignore this.

I wouldn't expect full windows/linux/osx on a phone until phones running the atom processor are a common place. Also, none of those OSs are optimized for the ease of use of phones. Even if they were running those OSs full, they would need a complete GUI overhaul...

Granted, Windows 7 would need some tweeks and additions to make it a good phone OS, but this wouldn't take too much work...it is already setup to be run from a touchscreen with no keyboard or mouse, it will run on resolutions as low as 640x480, and it has both hibernate and sleep support.
