UPDATED: Google phone 'Nexus One' confirmed, finally
UPDATE 1: The WallStreetJournal is reporting now that the phone will be called the Nexus One. There is no word on whether the rumored Google Voice implementation will be in effect, killing the need for a voice plan but requiring a data plan from a GSM carrier such as AT&T or T-Mobile.

Techcrunch is reporting this weekend that the oft-denied Google Phone is a reality, with Google employees confirming it all over their Twitter homepages and the Google Mobile blog announcing that they are in fact testing the phone with imminent release set for early next year.

Despite previous rumors however, the phone hardware will be manufactured by HTC but the phone will not be sold through a carrier and instead directly from Google as an unlocked handset. The phone's looks are said to be based on the upcoming HTC Passion or the HD2, which Google had input on the design of.

The creatively dubbed "Google Phone" will be available next month, as an unlocked GSM device, and will be the first phone to run Android 2.1, which has so far only been tested by Google employees. The phone runs on a Snapdragon processor, has a "super high-resolution" OLED touchscreen, has two mics, no physical keypad, is thinner than the rival iPhone, and has a very large resolution camera. New visual enhancements include animated desktop wallpapers (such as water that ripples when you touch it), voice-to-text for every application, and other incredible features.

Adds one Tweet from member "Great White Shark": "A friend from Google showed me the new Android 2.1 phone from HTC coming out in Jan. A sexy beast. Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids."

Says Google Mobile: "We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it."

Wrong, this is not official, and these are still rumors. Yes they are testing a google phone, but its not known if it is THE google phone. This is believed to be the htc passion, using android 2.1 with no google voice implementation.

Google announced they are testing these devices worldwide which they call dogfooding, but with no mention of it being the Google Phone. They actually say it is not the Google phone, but just a capable hardware used to test out the new android 2.1 so they can have a mobile lab which will give them more effective feedback. That doesnt mean this couldnt eventually turn into the Google phone, but it would most likely at very least have some revisions.

The main reason I'm hesitant to believe this is the official google phone is because rumors leaned towards a qwerty keyboard, also with the "real" version of android that will have heavy implementation of google voice and VOIP, thereby nullifying the need for a voice plan.

It certainly would nullify a voice plan. Too bad the phone companies will cling to the outdated system of charging for minutes used when their bandwidth pales in comparison to the data they give away so cheaply.

A phone in America that can beat the iPhone? It's a god send, I need a new phone. Especially if it's like the HD2!

on a different note, the only real advantage the iphone has on all these smartphones is that it has the biggest selection of apps and diverse games...
ill finish the same way i started this post..this SUCKS!

This thing will cost 800 bucks when it comes out. I dont understand how anyone in Obama's $hitty economy will be able to stomach that kind of initial cost. My parents and brothers have a palm-pre which i found was pretty nifty and a good deal at 150. I thought about getting one. So what does this phone have to offer that is light years better than the competition?

I am thinking the company Palm may have to eventually "consolidate" down the road (if you catch my drift).

This will not be 800 bucks. Google wouldnt come out with an 800 dollar unsubsidized phone. They arent that stupid. I'm actually a little disappointed. It doesnt have a qwerty keyboard or gv voip. Honestly as its looking, I might want to wait for a qwerty phone from sony, or acer, or anyone really that uses standard android os. If the droid keyboard had a better layout and a better chip, I'd much prefer it to the nexus. Hopefully 2.2 has the huge changes that have been rumored about. Maybe these will be a series like the droid.

there is still a good chance this isnt the google phone.

i love that they "borrowed" the cards system to choose between apps for multi tasking. makes my palm pre feel loved that for once someon is copying it :)
