Microsoft sells 60 million copies of Windows 7

Microsoft sells 60 million copies of Windows 7
Microsoft has announced their quarterly earnings today, claiming their highest-ever quarterly revenue, thanks directly to strong sales of the Windows 7 operating system.

The company sold 60 million copies of the new OS, and overall net income jumped 60 percent year-on-year to $6.66 billion USD.

In comparison, Vista took four months to sell 40 million copies, and sales slowed from there on out.

Additionally, Zune HD sales were not revealed, but total Xbox and Zune revenue dropped 11 percent year-on-year.

So again, like Vista, they're not saying how many copies were sold via inclusion w/ new computers vs. people buying retail copies? That implies they might be disappointed in retail copy sales.

I have a legit copy of Windows 7 ultimate installed on my pc and I am having no problems at all with this os, I am very pleased with Windows 7 and i think it will outsell Vista easily.

Well, that is 40 million Vista owners upgrading, so that leave 20 million new sales? Sounds plausible.

Windows 7 is actually good so it's not too surprising, looks like that public beta way was a good route. It allowed them to get additional feedback as well as get the praise it needed by showing it off to the masses. Love Windows 7, I haven't had any problems at all.

Just seems like more computers would have been sold then than today during the same time period.

After using vista for about two months, I switched back to XP. I've been running Windows 7 for about while now and think its their best operating system yet. Not that there isn't any room for improvement, if that were the case how would they sell us another one? Anyone that has used vista seriously will see the difference, but it should have been sold at an upgrade price. Paying full price for a finally polished vista is a joke.

Just seems like more computers would have been sold then than today during the same time period. The economy was better then, but despite a mostly bad economy, computer sales were quite high for the last holiday season...upwards of 80 million PCs. With several million of those being netbooks w/ XP or Linux and another several million maybe still coming w/ XP or Vista (and some business PCs using Windows Server 2003/2008), the bulk of that would be Windows 7 machines, so Windows 7 didn't necessarily SELL PCs...but just came with Windows 7 pre-installed and may have sold as well if XP were still the main OS available.

I'd still say more people (as a percentage) went out of their way to UPGRADE on purpose their existing PC OS for Win95/98 than newer versions of Windows. Unless Microsoft releases more detailed info, having a certain # of licenses sold doesn't really mean a whole lot.

i lovehow devilish the numbers are lol. and how everyone was taken by the amrketing of windows 7 over vista, even though it was a slightyl optomised version with a facelift, that bought not much new to the tables, unlike vista.

The $6.66 billion seems rather ominous, doesn't it? :-) There are reasons so many people here in Seattle know them as "The Evil Empire."

windows 7 is good and all but its missing stuff i was used to in XP and Vista. i have a legal copy of vista ultimate and it has given me no problems. maybe 1, but its nothing i couldn't handle. a windows 7 upgrade to me isn't neccessary. i put a "copy" of it on my laptop. seems better suited to that.

Actually i dont think windows7 is a improved version of vista as such. other than aero glass im sure most of the new underlying code is re-written.

This is the first time ms has released and OS that runs better on old and new systems alike, ive installed it on systems with 512mb of memory which struggled a bit with xp and had no hope of vista running. Install windows7, boots quicker and memory management is far superior to xp, even without glass the interface is better than xp... although im not sure what happened to the glass on any display card which was discussed early on in win7 development, guess it took to much to emulate on the cpu.

In in all everyone ive spoken to agrees systems with 512mb and above runs better with 7 than xp, forget vista (make a comical donkey noise).

I just upgraded my main rig to win7 from vista after i eventually broke and purchased a compatible copy of upek eikon 2009 so i can keep using my biometrics :) and after a week i can say i wish i had done it before... not much quicker (its not a slow rig) but by golly it boots quicker and just feels snappier.

Ive been using win7mce on the tv rig and its great, i just wish microsoft had extended the sharing of recorded tv to guide data and live tv after they promissed... but hey ho im sure one day we will have all the functionality of sage tv but with the media centers alakazam front end (tried to use sage TV did exactly what i wanted) look bad :( back to media center, tried GBPVR (again did what i wanted) but also looked like a donkeys ch0k so back to media center.

Anyway general consensus is win7 is cool :)

I think win vista was a bit of a mile stone in the same way windows me was, from the view point they both broke into new ground but both did it very badly, both looking back now were probably not as good in many respects (overall) as the os that came after or went before them.. however they were both a necessary evil to reach todays os.

I really wish now ms has a decent desktop os they could turn their heads to a decen mobile os upgrade (*COUGH*) wm7 sometime before i die of old age !!

I find myself asking myself - those people in this thread who say Windows 7 is an upgraded polished version of Vista - have you actually used the two systems ? Have you seen the source code ?
    No, I didn't think so.

In many respects, Windows 7 isn’t a radical shift from Vista, but is more of an attempt to fix Vista’s main flaws. It shares the same underlying architecture, and retains graphical touches like translucent Window borders. But it introduces some key new navigation and ease-of-use features, plus scores of small usability and performance improvements — too many to list here.

i have had both 64bit verisions for a long time.

and yes look at the kernal, windows 2000 was NT5.0 and xp was just the facelift to that being NT5.1

then vista was the BIG upgrade form that to NT6.0 and win7 is the minor one to that, being NT6.1 which the biggest improvement i have seen is the library system, which i like alot. That and implementation of DXVA.

and i can imagine when windows NT7 (windows 8?) people will hate it till NT7.1 Lol
