Nintendo pres blames lack of innovation, not piracy, on slowing software sales
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has taken a starkly different stance than others in his industry when asked about slowing software sales, citing lack of innovation instead of piracy as the main cause.

The executive was posed the question during a call about the company's revised financial forecast, which was revised to the downside thanks to slow software sales on both the DS and Wii.

Both consoles have just about hit saturation on the global scale.

Singling out an individual game, Iwata says innovative hits like "Art Academy" have sold well everywhere, including in nations where piracy has ravaged sales.

One such country is Spain, which is infamous for piracy levels that far exceed other Western European neighbors.

"Nintendo DS software could not make it to the hit software sales chart in the country for sometime," Iwata said, via GI. "However, when we launched the Nintendo DS software Art Academy in Europe this summer, which shows you how to draw pictures, it was ranked number one on the software sales chart covering all the videogame platforms in Spain. If one software can attract many people and can become a social topic, that software can sell regardless of piracy."

Of course, Iwata made sure to make it clear that piracy is indeed a problem, just not the biggest problem.

"As a responsibility of the platform holder, we will tackle piracy. For example, when we launch new hardware, such as Nintendo 3DS, it is a good opportunity to beef up the countermeasures, and we are actually working on that now. On the other hand, I do not think we should attribute bad software sales solely to piracy. Even with piracy, as long as we can create products which can attract attention from many consumers and which can greatly entertain them, that software can make it to the number one position of the hit software sales chart, " he concluded.

Nintendo, a video game company with common sense.

And yet they may have the most shovelware for a current-gen system.

    Oh well.

Lol, funny since mario bro's was a game built with some hidden inuendo's. Eat a mushroom and you grow bigger. Eat a flower, and you all of the sudden feel like you can throw balls of fire from your hands. Catch a lucky star and you're invincible. Oh, if you get the funny colored mushroom, you get an extra life. :P

Actually, IMHO recent Super Mario games have been surprisingly innovative, despite holding true to the series' core concepts.

Actually, Nintendo has added something nice/innovative to each released mario game... But yes, it would be nice to see them also move beyond the core 'what they know'.

I'm just happy a video game company finally isn't blaming piracy for all of their problems... they seam... well.. reasonable....

At least he gets it; look at Pokemon, that's a series that just keeps on milking. First party or 3rd party developers who want to succeed have to learn to put something creatively new, fun and entertaining to the table if they want to make it. Truth be told, its far better for a company to spend time on a game to make it right, rather than to rush it out for that Xmas sale, or something else retarded. Honestly if more companies took on Blizzard's take of quality to perfection, the crap games would be made less, and the good ones that had more developing time would be great to excellent and sell that much more.

blizzard and quality perfection don't belong in the same sentence, blizzard seems to do more bending over than actual perfection.

now Bio-ware is perfection, hit after hit after hit.

That's a matter of interpretation vs opinion. Bio-ware makes some great games, don't get me wrong, love the Mass Effect series and lets not rule out KOTOR, but lets face it, they have had a lot of bugs/glitches and god knows what else that can be named making them far from perfect in each of those series.

That isn't to say Blizzard doesn't have any glitches in their games, but I find Bio-Ware is more of a lets get this rushed out, then to give it a finer polish kind of company. I find Blizzard actually attempts to get most of even the minor glitches out of their games, and lets face it, the only real reason to put down Blizzard is because they sold out to Activision. Bethesda is the only other company I can name off that makes a polished entertaining game package like Blizzard. Gearbox and Rockstar is a close second, but even they seem to like to rush out from time to time.

Argue it all you want, again in the end its based on personal preference. Once upon a time Square used to care about quality as well, but ever since they teamed up with Enix, it seems to me they care more about getting the most titles out than any other company, over quality of a game. Once in a blue moon now Square hits a fantastic game, where it used to be every release. Same with Enix side of developing.

And as for hit after hit with Bioware... You never played that stupid Sonic RPG that flopped on the DS did ya...

I have to agree but I see much of the lack of innovation is on 3rd party developers. I find that most of the Nintendo Branded games are very fun to play individually and as a whole group for some. I love my Wii and I am currently playing the new Metroid which I think is a great game but overall the games I enjoy the most on the Wii are the Nintendo 1st party games. Most of the 3rd party titles didn't use the motion controls very well and too many developers released crappy mini games and used the controlling system as a gimmick which just strengthened the idea that the Wii is a kiddie system. That being said they were the first to bring the motion control system to mainstream and should be recognized for that. Now they have to work with themselves and their developers to utilize it properly. The lack of HD graphics is not a big deal unless the game developer throws some half-assed game together in their basement just to push the software.

    AMD Phenom II 965 @ 3.6Ghz, 8GB DDR3, ATI Radeon 5770HD, 300GB 10,000RPM Raptor, 2TB Additional HDD, Windows 7 Ultimate.

EA just lost 6% on their shares due to a poor release of Medal of Honor. EA now owns Bioware... To further my point about Bioware not being perfect, what a shame. EA willingness to release a game based on pre-orders and Xmas sales rather than fine tuning and polishing to create a better experience has hurt their numbers, and since they control when Bioware releases their games, what a shame... Perfection, far from it, why is it Bioware's fault? Because Bioware chose to sell out to EA in hopes to compete better with Blizzard and Bethesda.

President of Nintendo is right, people want quality not quantity, while business looks at quantity to figure out when to sell. Sad.. But at the same time let it be known its not always the developer's fault, but instead the company that markets the game.

    EA loses 6% Shares
