8 million Kinects sold in 60 days

8 million Kinects sold in 60 days
Microsoft revealed their quarterly earnings today, seeing revenue grow 5 percent to $19.9 billion.

The figure that really stood out, however, came from Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, which saw a huge 55 percent revenue growth, mainly thanks to strong Windows Phone 7 and Kinect motion control sales.

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division consists of the Xbox 360, Zune, Kinect and Windows Phone 7.

The division had $3.7 billion in revenue this quarter, up from $2.4 billion year-over-year.

Xbox Live memberships grew 31 percent, Xbox 360 sales were up 21 percent, and the company sold 8 million Kinects in just 60 days.

Adds Microsoft CFO Peter Klein (via Tech):

We are enthusiastic about the consumer response to our holiday lineup of products, including the launch of Kinect. The 8 million units of Kinect sensors sold in just 60 days far exceeded our expectations. The pace of business spending, combined with strong consumer demand, led to another quarter of operating margin expansion and solid earnings per share growth.

i do think it's because of kinect... and i think they mention windows phone just as a way to keep on giving it "good" advertisement because reality is that it's not being adopted like they'd like...

    +1
That I think is the real potential for this tech (and Primesense, the company behind it has been selling the tech for just that sort of application).
Facial recognition, voice command and gesture control (with 3D sensing), very cool.

That and a really cool international video comms system for Xbox.

Still a bit pricey for me to worry about right now tho seeing as I'm not that bothered about the 1st wave of games but once it comes down by about 1/3rd off I'll go buying.

Anyone see a total Xbox 360 sold number in this presentation?

I expect Kinect (on top of the 250gb Slim & 4gb Arcade Slims launched last year) has given their total number a real kick upwards.

What I was talking about was this:

"...mainly thanks to strong Windows Phone 7 and Kinect motion control sales..."

    Just a thought any ways...

Mm. If it did sell 8 million alone (which I highly doubt) then I underestimated it. I expected Kinect to die off pretty quick.

I play Kinect a while ago and I'll be honest, it was the most fun on a console that I've had in months. Kinect has better potential though and it's up to Microsoft to use it well.
