'Rock Band' series will continue on via DLC

Earlier this week, Activision announced that the once popular 'Guitar Hero' franchise is finished, with the company "disbanding Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit" and ending support for current games.

Harmonix, the developer behind 'Rock Band' has said today that the series will continue on via DLC, despite the "discouraging news" of Guitar Hero's demise.

The developer will still release new songs for the series, and will continue as planned with the release of the Fender Squier Stratocaster Guitar controller.

John Drake of Harmonix also noted that most Guitar Hero peripherals will work on Rock Band, if gamers want to switch over.

Adds Drake (via GameSpot):

The music genre is one that calls for constant reinvention, and Harmonix is continuing to welcome and embrace that call. In short, the beat of Rock Band marches on. We're continuing to invest in the franchise and the brand that we have built and will do our best to serve all loyal band game fans.

It only says they'll be continuing their DLC; it didn't say anything about no more new games.

They announced no more new games a few days ago, it looks like both the Activision and MTV guitar games are both history except for overpriced DLCs.

Actually, I really don't except the Rock Band series to fold under, mainly cause more sales on average than Guitar Hero, so maybe a DLC is in the works, who knows? All I know is this genre has went down the tubes in a large way, which is a shame, cause it keep those RIAA a**holes off our backs a little (ie, licensed tracks). Just a thought.

I'm sick of having to make numerous repairs to the instruments/controllers. It was poor quality and over priced. Good bye to over priced crap!

First generation controllers were absolute garbage. I'll give you that. I don't think the manufacturers foresaw the extreme use these drums and guitars were put to. Later versions seem to be a bit sturdier. That being said, I'm on my third guitar, now....*sigh*

Bout time the gimmick died out tired of trying to play with that damn guitar rather whoop with the controller or keyboard and mouse for that matter.

I still use X-plorers. I have a number of them. I think they were the only good controller (next best was GH3's wireless Gibson).

Once they tried to make them quiet, it went to crap. I always use headphones, I never hear my controllers.
