Sony confirms, PSN is down because of hackers

Sony confirms, PSN is down because of hackers
Earlier this week we reported that Sony's PlayStation Network was down "for maintenance" and that Sony was saying the downtime might be a "day or two" as Sony worked to bring back all features.

The shutdown is taking a lot longer than a day or two, as the PSN is still not functional, but at least Sony has confirmed why the popular free service is non-functional.

Says the company, via its blog:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

The PSN has over 70 million registered users, with 40 million or so expected to be active accounts.

So far, no one has taken credit for the attack, and 'Anonymous' said on Thursday, bluntly, "it wasn't us."

I'm not justifying that it's the right thing to do or anything of that nature, but usually if you don't screw over your customers like sony has been doing all year, these things don't tend happen on such a massive scale. You might get one pissed off idiot out of the masses on a normal day, but on a sony day you get two dozen. That's all I'm sayin.

First off you would think that a company that has such tech at their finger tips would have pre planned this from ever happening because it isnt them that feel it i very much doubt many of the sony team even spend much time on the network other then figure out numbers and how to lure us into another purchase. All i have to say is one i bet any money sony now has us pay for the play time i mean its sorta happend..certain games and wut not are not available unless for pay to play..so here is number two thanks sony for this because some of us have paid monthly subs for gaming yet i am unable to play that game because its only online play...so in the mean time im sure i can find other things to keep me busy..but the point is im already paying monthly for a game and im sure no reembarsement will be made for those of us that pay for dc universe online..or the simple fact millions of us log on daily to play these games yet you all too forever even saying anything about the problem this is almost as shut mouth as BP dumping oil into the oceans..really billions of rev...and you still make it available for outsiders to hack your system..im sure these are the same simpletons that still believe in unicorns and sleep with the door open...well in a world of bored people you seemed to have ticked off every person that logs into psn you managed to piss of these people that shut down the system you managed to leave us all with a sour taste in our mouths..so my suggestion is that maybe you guys all take the bite and give us consumers a free download of either a game or content and for those that have been since wednesday to play online dc universe a compt. month because that is fair we pay for it and its been 3days and nothing till today that u have no clue when its good to log on..thank xbox sux but atleast i can get online thanx sony

Has anyone thought that Phony might be lying? Perhaps they're just configuring the perfect update that will tell them who is doing ANYTHING on their PS3, that is against the Phony policy. Perhaps they are configuring Netflix to work without the PSN (oh to dream). I notice that pretty much everyone can use Netflix without currently logging into the PSN (interesting). Or, maybe there is an evil genius at work, hellbent on destroying the online gameplay market. If this is the case, stop attacking the PSN, and go after Phony corporate, and stop messing with the PSN.

I am upset that people have nothing better to do than to bring down the network, people pay $60 a game to play and alot of the allure is the free online gaming otherwise people would play xbox and pay for the services, I know from playing world of warcraft online for 6yrs we never had an issue last longer than a half a day before it was fixed (downtime that is) and that was in the beginning stages of the game. I feel things aren't being fixed fast enough, yet i believe because it is free although $60 a game is hardly free thats why it is taking longer to fix, also I am upset about it...the first day i cancelled my world of warcraft is when the psn went down. So much for call of duty but I refuse to be like so many others and get ticked off about it, I'll go and play w/ my kids outside, maybe the hackers were doing this because they were sick of obese people on welfare playing all day on taxpayers money or athletically challenged kids(lazy ones) not wanting to get fresh air. I work allday fulltime, come home and spend time w/ my wife and kids and when they go to bed i game for a bit, so not obese or challenged but still abit upset that this happened, for me though not you :D

So yeah edited by ddp YOU!!! Hell you could have waited till after the holiday when people have a life or not on vacation you know. Thank you for ruining Easter you make Jesus cry you ass hats.

Yeah...they are going to try to declare DDoS attacks a form of terrorism, and then they will admit that DDoS attacks are just a form of mass protest, and then they will declare mass protest a form of terrorism.

My only concern is that Sony should be more forthcoming with details. Has any credit card or account info been exposed? How much longer do you expect to be down? I don't expect 99.999% uptime from a free service, but I wouldn't expect it to take too long to find the extent of the penetration of their servers and to restore them.

It would be ironic if Sony's severs had a rootkit installed and that is what is taking so long to fix.

Got news for you, *Just Bitchen*......Netflix has worked the whole time if you didn't get faked out by the first message that pops up :P I've been watching movies on NetFlix the whole time that PSN has been down. You just have to go to the NetFlix app on the PS3 and try to sign in with it a couple of times and then it lets you in to watch what you want to.

There was NO effort by the overall Anon collective to bring PSN down. I'm Anonymous, and there has been NO group effort. We had given up from a DDoS attack because Sony's servers were to good to be able to do any actual shutting down. Tried 2 weeks ago and it was barely annoying to Sony. So we changed methods to protesting at Sony stores worldwide instead. DDoS is NOT hacking! If anyone with Anon hacked Sony, then they did so without the knowledge or blessing or the group collective. I think people are giving us WAY too much credit for what can be done......PSN is shutdown WORLDWIDE, not just the US or not just EU, but EVERYWHERE.....Have any idea just what it would take to do that? It would be easier to hack into NORAD.

But I'm sure, given Sony's advantage to saying that it was us, that Sony would ever say that it wasn't. BTW - The first statement that Sony dished out was that the problem came from Japan.....they've changed their story 5 or 6 times since then about what's wrong. If we had done this as the group, we WOULD claim it.

Like the banks, Sony will never admit to what's really happened. But I wouldn't be surprised if they played this up for all it's worth.

The fact that it's occurred over Easter makes me think it's not Sony themselves... too much potential revenue lost.

I am leaning towards a breakaway fundamentalist Anon group or member. It could be a Mafia organisation trying to blackmail Sony for money.

And contrary to what some may think, I actually am sorry for the PSN users (...bar one :P). It's hard to think of a happy ending here... Do you really think they would give OtherOS back? It wasn't making them any money in attached sales.

    EDIT:
    Just read Thanatos63 post... interesting!

Not confirmed but comes from a reputable website (PSU) who has good ties and proven inside info before ~

Quote:A source with close connections to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe reports that the attack to the PlayStation Network may be a bit deeper than originally reported by Sony. According to the source, who wishes to remain anonymous, the PSN sustained a LOIC attack (which created a denial-of-service attack) that damaged the server. There was also a concentrated attack on the PlayStation servers holding account information. In addition, “Admin Dev accounts were breached.”

As a result, “Sony then shut down the PSN and [is] currently in the process of restoring backups to new servers with new admin dev accounts.” The SCEE source said Japanese servers may be restored tomorrow while the U.S. and E.U. servers will likely be operational the following day.

While this information is only corroborated via a series of Facebook messages, it is certainly not a stretch. Sony Computer Entertainment America recently confirmed that it pulled down the PSN because of an “external intrusion.” This essentially means that hackers were to blame. Sony is officially conducting a thorough investigation. The PSN and Qriocity services were pulled offline by Sony on Wednesday, April 20.

There was plenty of speculation late this week that the Anonymous hackers group was to blame for the PSN downtime. The group previously targeted Sony in retaliation to the legal action against another hacker. Anonymous has since denied involvement in the current PSN downtime.

Again, this information is from a source who claims to have a very close connection with someone at SCEE. We take these reports for what they are at this time, but it is certainly a possibility. If you have information to share, please do so.

"Everyone deserves the right to know what’s been going on," the source wrote in an email.

    @Oner

Even if Thanatos63 is not connected with Anon it's probably true that they would claim responsibility if it was them.

If he's right when he says it's a BIG operation to DOS Sony's servers then, yeah, I'm looking at Russia.

A few years back there was this little outback horse-racing racetrack that ran their own betting site... a nice little earner and completely above board. They were targeted by Russia and given a little taste of what they could do, then a deadline demanding a percentage of all future earnings. Upon approaching Telecom, who handle the basic underlying infrastructure of telecommunications in Oz, they were told, "No worries", laughter, "tell them where to go, we'll handle it, she'll be Jake".

It wasn't. When the attack arrived it was on an unprecedented scale. The internet was crippled in most of our major cities, I think it shut down Adelaide completely. All Telecom could do was blink, and then lamely pull the plug on their address. Or to put it another way, block all traffic to their site.

Their business was f***ed, and it has never recovered.

Lately the Russian Government (read: Mafia) has been implicated in major DOS attacks on other important or significant sites. I would not put this past them or their affiliates.

I've been doing a bit of international online shopping lately and I noticed with surprise that, along with countries like Nigeria (naturally), Russia is blacklisted. Other former Eastern Block countries aren't but Russia is.

The report I saw that dealt with this and other attacks mentioned the Doomsday Worm. It's very very widespread and no-one knows what it for... yet.

I admit to speculation and perhaps some noobishness in this. If any Russian reads this, please don't take it personally.

This shit shouldn't have happened the techs at Sony need to prepare for this kind of thing! they should have known! Tons of people rely on the network to play.
when u play some games as we all know we need to be logged on to the ps network, even some of the apps on the ps3 need it. The People are mad! we pay for all these games and apps we as customers need better from u guys. at least have a spare server for things like this a backup plan or something! come on Sony get ur shit together! and yes like everyone has been saying treat us better or this might very well be the end of the Playstation! sony could learn a little from microsoft!

post #39 starts making sense but gets worse the more you read.kids do need to go out more.parents probably need to teach there kids about working & responsibility rather than buy them over priced electricals.

it could be the russains that took psn down.could also be china they seem to get more powerful every week.could also be another country.could be a group of hackers angry at sony.the possibilies are endless as a lot of people were angry at sony.

could of even had something to do with the earthquakes in japan.

    @xboxdvl2

It doesn't quite seem to be China's style. They are right into cronyism, spying and other sh!t for sure but this...?

Whereas, this seems to be right up Russia's alley. They have the size and balls to maybe pull this off. I mean, if you control a massive criminal country... "Aww Jeez Sony, we had a look but just can't find them, soz".

I'm just trying to see who this would benefit and who could get away with it. Anon say they aren't involved and claim it isn't an easy operation (above). If Sony were targeted by blackmailers they may, in all probability, not want to let their shareholders know.

Suppose it could be an enfant terrible but I also see Russia sliding towards Nazism which at it's core was not idealogical for most high level members but a scam.

Sony purposely shut the PSN down, 'cos the attack to the PSN was a bit deeper "Hackers: maybe obtained the private key of SSL/TLS certificates valid for serving or intercepting HTTPS domains....like in Comodo Affair" ....than originally reported by Sony.

Here’s hoping that Sony regains control of their network soon.

    Ghah...sunlight...it BURNS!!!

I would switch to a 360...if it were not for my massive collection of games that would be useless on the 360. As for the Wii, the same problem applies, plus I couldn't even repurchase most of my games because the thing does not have to power to run them. I won't be buying the next sony console, but I am kinda stuck with the PS3...the system itself is only a tiny fraction of the money I have spent on the games. On top of that my "real life" friends are all on the PSN...a couple of them have 360s, but even they don't pay for XBL gold, because our whole circle is on the PSN. I will make sure they all remember this when it comes time for us all to move to the next generation...I don't want to be forced to buy a PS4 simply because it is the only way to play against friends.

The PC still Remains the most powerful gaming machine. Maybe its time to give up the training wheels?

Now there is info/rumor that this was due to the Rebug 3.55.1 CFW. Which kind of makes the most sense out of all this because it allowed the (free) "purchase" of ANY game/dlc on the PSN via the dev network.

So you are saying that Sony shut it down themselves to prevent the theft of game/dlc on the PSN whist they sorted out a solution?

Gee, I would have though the loss of revenue over the Easter period would have made them wait till after. There can't be that many who have that CFW. (And couldn't they trace the IP's of those that did anyway? I would have thought that would be a really bloody risky thing to do... just asking to be caught imho.)

Wall Street Journal! Well I suppose that about says it all.

Had a quick browse through the comments. I was surprised at how many said they were going to switch over to Xbox. Didn't really believe it but there were a lot.

Lot of people blaming Anonymous too.

(One wrote: "Fix the lag while your at it". Kind of ironic, the paid-for X360 version is crap in Oz too... for international connections.)

I can see M$ moving to make sure they are safe. One would hope so, I hate the way they keep one's CC details. I suppose it makes it easier for kids to steal off their parents.

According to PC World, "External Intrusion" means that it wasn't a DDOS attack, but instead, it's likely the handy work of one individual.

I say suck my nut to you because now for the reasons I decided to get a ps3 in the first place (family netflixing being cheaper than going to the movies) I say your talking out your ass and you dont know what your talking about and I bet if you posted a picture of your ugly self you'd look like less physically active than me, shithead... :) so yeah, sony blah blah blah, I'm not a happy customer.

Maybe not. From MrGuss' link above http://goo.gl/fb/kiajg :

Wikipedia reports 50 million PlayStation 3 units and 70 million PlayStation Network users... This attacker could potentially have created overnight the largest botnet in the world by a very large margin...

...if this attacker played their cards right they could control up to 500,000,000 CPU
(?) cores for a total of 1,600,000,000,000,000,000 core-cycles per second.... even 10% of this type of computing capacity is far beyond what many important data security and cryptographic systems are expected to resist. For example, it seems likely that the Stevens et al. techniques could be used again successfully to forge a stronger SHA-1-based rogue Certificate Authority (or several).

    Then there are the accounts.

I did make a comment on how I disliked CC details being held by $ony (and M$ etc.) simply because it made it easy for kids to steal from Mum and Dad. This is the upshot...

I came close to recommending everybody should change their CC details ~ which the cops are now doing. Too bloody late to worry about all your personal details e.g. birthday, home address etc.

I really do blame Sony here... dickheads!

PS: I still think it may have originated from Russia. But I only thought it may have been blackmail because we were led to believe it was purely a LOIC DOS attack (which was probably the cover).

fcuk sony. us customers rule. they make the machine, we buy it & do to it whatever we choose. sony is below us, not above. they make whatever they make to please us. they dont rule us & im glad people fight for our playstation community. the community is dominant, DO NOT TRY & FIGHT US. i a wont be buying a ngp or psp2 like i did the 3DS, sony isnt getting my money again. lets all rape our current sony products & get every last drop out of them & not give them money for any of their future products. even you dumb casuals. nintendo made some dumb claims too, but definately not to the extent of sony. take this on board & boycott their future products, make then learn the hard way that were dominant

always question what Sony says if its true or not, they have continuously lied to the public, why do you think they would now be telling the truth, about anything?

White SW PSP 2001> Silver PSP 2001 > Silver PSP 3000 >Installed CFW > CFW 5.00 M33 >(:>) Im not as think as you dumb I am.

Although I feel bad for all sony customers, this is your golden opportunity to wean yourself of a product from a company that ripped you off and will continue to do so when they are up and running again. If sony only keeps 50% of their customers after this event, sony will be more arrogant than ever, knowing they can do anything to their customers and they will follow like sheep.

Summer is coming. Go outside, play a sport that involves more than moving your fingers. Worst case scenario: Your're addicted to gaming: then switch to PC gaming. The games work on any PC. (Maybe you should boycot Ubisoft for their DRM games though.)

Otherwise, grin and bear it folks. If sony customers are that deeply addicted to psn, then I will probably buy shares in sony and collect healthy dividends for YOUR money!

I will still never buy any Sony products.
