Redbox launching video game rentals in June

Starting June 17th, Redbox will begin adding video games to 21,000 of its rental kiosks.

Says Joel Resnik, vice president of games at Redbox:

Historically, video game products have not been available at grocery stores, drugstores or convenience stores. We make it very convenient by having our kiosks in front of the places people are at every day.

Rentals will cost $2 per night, and will include games for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360.

For the last few months, Redbox has been testing the video game rentals at 5000 kiosks, including locations in Orlando, Austin and Reno.

Users can search for available titles online.

  Not sure how this will work out.
  
  Where I'm from (Indiana, USA) I can go to my local video rental place and rent video games for $2.95/3days or $5.95/7days. New releases arrive in rental store the same day as any other major retail store. I just don't see a point, unless I only want to play a game for one night.

  LOL there going to loose a lot of money if they don't watch it because the prepaid Visa and Master card work in them. SO if someone only put $5 on the card they just got a $20-$60 game for Five bucks!!!!

  Yeah, It's been going on here in san jose, ca for a few months now but I haven't been enticed to use it once, mainly because the selection was lame and secondly because one night is just a waste.

  This is news? Redbox has been doing this for months now. As previously stated, their selection is quite lame - only including some ps3 and wii games.

  Yeah...........and for that reason, I just don't see this working out for Redbox. Unless you truly want a game for only 1 night which I highly doubt.

  Maybe the games are on special disc that expires? When I had discs service with Netflix, I did noticed some dvd discs have special marking on them.
  
  Anyway, $2 per night is still too much, it's not like you can finish a game in a night. If you want a feel of the game, then there are demos and Youtube videos.

  Not a bad deal if you want to try out a game for just one night. Obviously with this being used in test markets Redbox has come to the conclusion they can make a profit on this. Isn't that why they do the testing to see if it will work out.

  i cant play online kids wont shut up long enough so this would work out great. i like games like homefront and call of duty but to spend $60 for a game that online has about 5 hours of single player. doesnt make any since so for $4 i could finish it in 2 nights. after that they really dont have any use so i can take the back saving me $55.

  Finally somewhat of an answer to gamefly's overpriced subscription. That's all I really need is one night to really test the game out and see if its worth buying rather than blowing 60$ like on homefront. Hopefully the selection is good though.
