Sony denies S-LCD exit report

Sony denies S-LCD exit report
Japanese firm will not exit LCD joint venture with Samsung.

Sony Corp. has moved to squash rumors that it will exit an LCD joint venture with South Korea's Samsung Electronics. The rumors surfaced as Sony is heading for an eight straight year of losses in its televisions division.

Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper, first reported the rumor. It said that Samsung was in talks with Sony on how the joint venture, S-LCD, would be broken up. It quoted an unidentified industry source close to the situation in its report.

In April this year, both companies were reported to have cut capital in S-LCD by over $500 million, as Sony looked to cut its TV losses and Samsung put more focus into next generation display technology.

I do know there is still a huge amount of animosity that still goes on between the Asian nations over there, so leaking privileged information to make one side look bad wouldn't be uncommon.

Also knowing that Korea has been tasked with manufacturing a lot of the newest/breaking technologies (before passing it on to gross manufacturing) this could mean that Sony wants to back away from research & development (at least the funding of it anyway).

Granted, that's pure speculation, but seeing as how Sony hasn't kept its house in order over the last year & their hell bent attitude on ultimate control... seems to me this shell game is being played with transparent cups.

There is a very simple rule for decoding a Sony press release...they are completely incapable of any form of truth.

If they say they are not doing something, consider it done.

If they promise to do something, consider it abandoned.

If they tell you that the ocean is wet, buy some bottled water, because the ocean just dried up.
