Sony takes one last shot at the media player industry with Tegra 2 and Android
Sony has decided to take one last crack at the aging media player business with their Walkman NWZ-Z1000.

The device will take on the iPod Touch and the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0. The new Walkman will feature a 4.3-inch WVGA display, Android 2.3, and a dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The Android will have access to the Market and the full Google suite, meaning the media player will have 250,000 apps at its disposal.

Sony says they are boosting the audio with its own S-Master MX sound tech, xLoud compact integrated speaker and access to its Music Unlimited service. Furthermore, the device will have an FM radio and a dedicated "W" (for Walkman) button that will lead to "instant music playback."

The players will be expensive, as is standard with Sony, with the 8GB version priced at $250. For comparison, the iPod Touch is $50 cheaper and the Galaxy Player is $100 cheaper. The 16GB model will cost $280 and the 32GB will cost $330.

Sony says to expect the device in the next few months.

I can't see this thing succeeding with anyone other than sony fanboys. Everyone else would buy a competitors equipment for less price.

No kidding huh???? 250.00 for an 8GB? F that!

Poor Sony. I do love their electronics as they are feature rich for a low price (usually) but they're just getting their asses pushed right aside.

Before we all know it......Sony will ONLY deal in the PS3, PS4 and some blu-ray players (while they're still around). TV division is struggling and now their "Walkman". They really need to reinvent themselves.

Who will buy ps4 when Nintendo and Microsoft will own the market for about two years before Sony makes it debut? And even then will the ps4 have a $600 price tag?

Proprietary... Expensive... Fragile... WTF... Do I have to pay for Butt F**ing stupid too?

I'm really tired of this... After working so long in the entertainment industry & seeing the profuse price bloating of Sony's products in that atmosphere & then see it echoed in the pro-sumer market when it meant a 'little' bit, then to see it reflected again in the consumer electronic field, yet again when it could be seen as having yielded some mentioning... Given the last 12-15 years? SCREW IT!!!

They have blown it! We all know where they have gone & the reasons why they have lost the consumer base. This is just one more product that just goes to prove it.

Sometimes I wonder why I waste the keystrokes...

I even have MP3s on my phone as well. It plays wonderfully, better than the damned iPud I had a while back. No sense in changing now.

    Thanks for reminding me...

LOL - Exactly; Why buy this expensive, fragile, DRM-laden POS when most people already have a device that'll do the same job, better, and even if they don't already, they can get a superior product for less? I don't like Apple much, but damn, I'd get an iDevice before THIS thing.

Really? How do they pretend to succeed? There are better and bigger players for less money!!
I wonder what's wrong with Sony?
